Para: Meeting in the Hardware Store
Who:Â Santana and Finn
When:Â Saturday, 14 Nov 2015
Where: Finnâs job at Harveyâs Hardware
What:Â Finn helps Santana in the hardware store
Santana had only been in her new house for a week, and she was still in the early stages of getting everything unpacked and in its place. It was her first time living on her own. Sheâd never lived alone in her twenty-seven years of life. Sheâd gone from her parents house to college with a roommate to marrying her college sweetheart. Sheâd thought she and Rachel were going to go the distance, but walking in on her riding reverse cowgirl on Jesse in her dressing room had killed those dreams instantly. Sheâd moved back in with her parents until she could sell the house she and Rachel had lived in together in Virginia. Living at home had gotten really old really fast. So sheâd decided to buy a townhouse in Denton, Maryland because she wanted something quiet and far enough from big cities that she lived in a small town, but close enough to travel there if she needed.
Sheâd insisted on doing everything in her house herself though she was already regretting it. It wasnât that she wasnât handy. Sheâd taken a few classes when she and Rachel had gotten their house together, but this was different when you were alone and the house wasnât an older built one. There was a smaller, hometown hardware store near where she lived, which was pretty much her only option since the closest big hardware stores was twenty-two miles away. She walked inside, a list in her hand, and started to look around.
Finn just got his first real job at the hardware store and had been working there just over a few months, because of Burt, heâd always done well about things that were meant to be handy, which he was grateful for, even if having a stepfather wasnât ideal in his life. Finn had lived in Denton all his life and always figured that he knew everyone there was to know, until a new customer walked in the store, but not just any customer, this girl did not look like she belonged in their store, nor did she look like she knew what she was doing.
âCan I help you with anything?â he asked, approaching her cautiously as sometime people shot him down quickly at the offer. Finn was much taller than the other girl, no surprise there since he was taller than more anyone, and he looked down at her anticipating a reply that would either send him walking away with his tail between his legs, or give him something to do on a shit that was less than exciting for the day.
Glancing up at the voice, Santana found herself looking into the eager, earnest face of a boy that looked high school age. She looked back at her list and then to him again. âUm...well I have a list of things I need. So I could definitely use some help.â She handed him her list of supplies. It would get her in and out of the store a lot faster. Plus there were an item or two on there that she had no idea what they were.
Finn took the list and gave it a once over before motioning for the woman to follow him a few aisles over, âwhat kind of project are you doing?â he asked, curiously given the look of the list it didn't seem obvious and he grabbed one of the items before continuing on to another aisle⊠and after a second his curiosity took over more so, âYou're not from around here, are you?â
âNo, Iâm not from here. I just moved to townhouses here in Denton, and I am trying to mount my television to the wall. I also need to put together a bookshelf, and put some shelves on the walls. I have a new coffee table. Basically, I just have a lot of small projects around the house and like no tools,â Santana explained, hating that she sounded a little like a helpless female.
Finn nodded a little surprised, âTownhouses? Like⊠white ones?â he asked grabbing another of the listed items for the woman before continuing on. His eyebrows furrowed as he struggled to remember where something was, but quickly recovered, âMoving sucks,â he made small talk, âMy mom and I just moved in with my stepdad and his son and I swear it took me a week to get all of our stuff situated since my stepdad is more of a car guy than a household guy.â
Santana nodded. âYes, I live in a white townhouseâŠâ She tried not to be weirded out that he knew that, but maybe it was just a guess. âThereâs like seven communities with white townhouses. So I guess thatâs a fair question,â she joked. âMoving does suck. I hate it, and Iâm hoping not to have to do it again for a long time, but itâs nice that you helped your mom and stepdad with their house.â She gave him a genuine smile.
âIâm not trying to be a creep,â he said, switching the arms he was using to carry the things he had gathered for her thus far, âI live in one, so it was more of a fair question than a weird one, I swear.â Except he cringed because it had been such a weird question that he probably shouldnât have asked anyone, let alone a pretty customer that would think he was a creepy dude. âJust another aisle over then Iâll ring you up.â
She could tell he was a little embarrassed, and she decided to cut him some slack. âYou live in one too? Which ones? Iâm over off of Blue Heron Drive.â She doubted that they were close, and given how awkward he was, she didnât think he was likely to show up. âThanks for the help. I was a little lost when I came in.â
âNo way,â Finn grinned, âI live there too, see thatâs why I was curious!â This made him seem like way less of a freak with the interesting coincidence, or maybe not, but heâd go with that in his head for the sake of not wanting to be a creep. He walked to the register after grabbing the last item on her list and began to ring up the items one by one, âIf you need any help with this stuff I could totally lend a hand,â way to be more of a freak, Hudson, something about pretty girls always made him lose whatever cool he thought he had.
âYouâre like a real boyscout arenât you?â Santana asked, slightly charmed by his eagerness to help. She could totally tell that this kid like helped old ladies across the street and got cats out of trees and shit, stuff people only did in fifties sitcoms. âI will keep that in mind if I ever see you around.â
âUh, sure?â he replied, not sure what that meant since he was definitely too old to be a boy scout, or at least he was pretty sure he was too old for it. He focused on ringing up her items and then read off the item total so she could pay, âYou will⊠see me around⊠because itâs a thing that happens around here, seeing people, and stuff,â he rambled, muttering the last part of the sentence knowing that he was not scoring cool points, not at all.
Santana wondered if that was really true, that sheâd continuously run into the people she met here in this town. She guessed it made sense. That would be why she moved here. âRight, the whole small town part of living hereâŠâ She gave him a little smile. âSo I guess Iâll see you around then...â She peered at his name tag. â...Finn.â
Finn nodded, handing the woman he reciept, âPlus working here means I know everyone even better,â he tilted his head a little, and smiled, figuring that was his invitation of sorts for her to come back if she needed anything else later on. âHave a good dayâŠâ he paused, hoping for her name.
âIâm Santana,â she supplied easily, taking her receipt and her bag of supplies. She had a lot of work ahead of her if she wanted to get her place ready in time for Thanksgiving. She was having friends over to her new place.
âSantana,â he repeated with a nod of his head, as it wasnât a name he expected, but it was a pretty one nonetheless, âIâll be seeing you around then, Santana,â Finn added in punching in the last of the numbers for the register so he could help the next customer.
Santana gave him one last smile then headed out of the store.
