PERSONAL WORK:
I decided to practise character movement with audio, I had a lot of fun working on this piece!
PERSONAL WORK:
Today due to the lock-down and practised animating on Fire Alpaca. I enjoyed doing some 2D since I hadn’t done so in a while!
I am very pleased with how my mystery box is turning out, it flows really nicely and i am pleased with the timing of the walk and the reaction.
We started working on our 3D mystery box, in this lesson I was practising the walk and beginning to animate the puppets reaction, Initially I found it difficult to insert frames but I managed to get the hang of it relatively quickly.
In this lesson we practised posing with the 3D puppet, this was to help us with transitioning frames. This helped me better understand the twisting of joints as in 2D I can not do this.
In this lesson we practised timing of animation in the software Maya, this process though at first was tricky to understand, was relatively easy. I enjoyed this lesson and was pleased with how my work had turned out.
Today I had a class on editing, this was mainly to help us edit Stop Motion pieces. We were taught how to remove the background and shadows from a video. In the clip we had a video of a cup where we had to remove the background for every frame. I struggled with this class as I have never previously edited before.
Essay Research:
Today i began to look into the Heores Journey and the various stages of which are important for a narrative story to fit into this template
24th January 2020: Personal Work
Today I designed a third character to go alongside the other fantasy creatures I have created for this unit! I have been researching various horror films both animated and not animated whilst also looking into crime documentaries to see personality traits and upbringings which may or may not have affected crimes offenders committed and have applied those to different characters. Since in modern day films the scariest films seem to have more humanoid or human villains/antagonists. Which is why my fantasy creatures look like humans with masks, though I plan to develop them a lot more after I have done more research for my upcoming essay.
21st January 2020:
Today we used Z-Brush and Maya, we learnt how to alter faces and how to place blueprints onto the face which would help animate facial movements. I struggled a lot in this lesson as i found it hard to keep up with the tutorial, however, I managed to begin blueprinting the face at the end.
20th January 2020: Life drawing
In today’s lesson we were doing tonal painting, like last time we used ink again. I opted to use black and white since the skeleton was our model this time. We were supposed to have a model though, unfortunately they did not show up.
I enjoyed this session a lot, it was difficult painting with a thick ink brush as the bristles had bent with use and would sometimes add ink to where I did not want it. I am pleased with the outcome of my paintings!
20th January 2020: Personal work
Today I decided to draw out what I would like my stop motion puppet to look like so I could get a better understanding on how I want to animate it once I have completed it whilst also practising using water colours.
I am still gravitating towards the horror theme as I don’t usually create characters for that genre, though so far I am pleased with the design and the personality I have developed for it!
The first image shows what it’s room would look like, as I wanted to go for a haunted witch doctor type of character.
15th January 2020: Personal work
As I have been researching Coraline and fantasy creatures I was looking into other examples of exaggerated humanoid features I came across a game called ‘Little Nightmares’ where similar to Coraline there is a protagonist in a yellow rain coat and disturbingly designed enemies. The game gives these characters a specific colour pallet which makes them look sick and ill as their skin has become a dull brown/yellow colour. I particularly like the bosses featured in this game as they seem to show the most similarities towards the ‘Other Mother’ with the long appendages and the disturbing faces! I decided to draw my favourite characters featured in the game or are going to be featured in future games to help me understand how to make a character look human and horrifying at the same time.
14th January 2020:
In today's lesson we started to work on our stop-motion puppets, we created the wire skeleton and I decided to sketch a couple ideas for my creature. As I have been looking into cryptids and horror animated movies it became apparent that humanoid monsters seem to be viewed as more scary compared to the generic idea of a ‘monster’.
14th January 2020: Personal Work
Using my frog astronaut idea from the previous Z-Brush lesson I attempted to draw out the idea I originally wanted to create, though the vest and bag pack seemed far too complicated to replicate. I attempted to try and draw something in a cuter style rather than my regular style and I was happy with how it came out.
13th January 2020 - Narrative Research
Today I had a group tutorial with our class’ lecturer, Lindsey White. We discussed how to plan, structure and research our essays. Though I still haven’t started mine it gave me a good idea on what i should do and which questions could apply best to the film i had chosen.
The question I am gravitating towards the most is ‘Analyse your chosen narrative with close reference to the Hero’s Journey or another appropriate template.’ The film which I will be analysing will be ‘Coraline’ which was directed by Henry Selick and released in 2009. I would like to compare the book to the film whilst also analysing the ‘Other Mother’ which is the main antagonist, especially her transformation scenes physically and mentally.
13th January 2020: Personal Work
Following my personal project I designed the Wendigo and the Jersey Devil, I wanted to help improve my skills when drawing hooves, horns, antlers and wings due to a lot of fantasy creatures having these characteristics. I am pleased with the designs of both of them!
