“I mean there could be,” Hunter told. “It’s not like one singular gay person would know everything about everyone. Half the time they don’t even know things about themselves…” It was only then he realized how he was coming across as the thoughts were actually leaving his mouth and reentering his ears. “I’m not straight by the way… I feel like I should clear that up.” He shook his head, not sure how he had gotten to the rambling point. “Why do you need to be decent at something you don’t actually care about?” He asked.

“Well they should let me in on the agenda because I’m probably doing this wrong.” And clearly, Fiona was not the only one that appeared to be doing something wrong(?) in this conversation. “O... kay. Cool. That wasn’t what I thought you were going to say. Do you have... questions?” Should she have been more supportive? How many times had Hunter come out before, anyway? “So that people can’t tell me that I’m not qualified to talk about it or give it a whirl.”

“Why is nobody straight nowadays?” Hunter thought aloud, not quite realizing how homophobic his question probably sounded. He raised his eyebrow at her questions, trying not to laugh even though he was given permission. “Uhm, MMORPGs are online or you would need to be hooked up to everyone’s computer which is impossible. Most games nowadays can branch from a gaming system to a computer, computers tend to be the best bet though.” He glanced up at her, wondering where she was even storing all this information, making him more skeptical. “Gaming computers tend to have better speed and graphics and you use them only for gaming so you don’t waste space with like… homework.”

“Oh, if only that were true. There isn’t a gay agenda, but even if I was interested in boys, you’re like four years younger than me.” And kind of cringey. “So a gaming computer is like a video game system but it’s still a computer? Maybe I’ll just stick with a normal computer. I don’t really think I’ll be doing that much game stuff if I like it.” It all sounded like kind of an extensive hobby. “It’s annoying because I want to be decent at this sort of thing, but it sounds like an investment.”

“Okay, you’re gay… noted,” Hunter nodded to himself, now trying to think of an alternate reason Fiona cared because there was no way what she was saying was actually true. “That would be the MM in MMORPG,” He laughed. “Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games,” He explained.

Fiona nodded back, continuing to be grossed out about Hunter thinking she had that kind of ulterior motive. No, she really just hated not knowing what was happening. “I can see why that got abbreviated. So how do I get started playing one of those? Is this a computer game thing? Do I need a system? What’s a gaming computer too?”

“I’d like for the drama to miss me too in all honesty, but I’d happily take it if the other option was one of my friends got dragged through the dirt. Don’t think it’s bad at all if you ask me. Whenever there’s a large gathering of people, drama and disasters are basically right around the corner. I’m right there with you when it comes to hoping that it skips over though.” Mack gave Fiona a warmhearted smile before he gave a shrug. “Honestly, your guess is as good as mine. I only had eyes for the T-Birds and admired the Pink Ladies for different reasons.”

“Ugh, my best friends are probably used to dirt by now. It’s going to be stressful if anyone gets dragged through the mud.” Fiona felt only a little bad for wishing her friends faced nasty drama instead of her. Her eyes lit up when she heard that; she needed way more gay acquaintances. “I feel that. I have no idea why you’re admiring the Pink Ladies because they were kind of mean, but I rewatched the end of the film version a few times because of Sandy’s outfit, and it’s only partly because of the excellent design choice. You’re in good company.”

“I can get on board with that,” Mack agreed with an awkward thumbs up of his own. He gave Fiona a reassuring smile as he added, “None taken when it comes to offense. Think it’s actually a good sign that there isn’t much to talk about right now, if that makes any sense?” He chuckled as he took a moment to consider why the song was so popular before he eventually shrugged. “Honestly, I wouldn’t know what to tell you. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was a combination of both. The latter reason for the more innocent Grease fans and the former for those with seriously corrupted minds.”

“No news is good news? Makes total sense, and sounds great to me. When drama makes its way over here, I’d like for it to mess me. Is it bad that I think it’s inevitable for some sort of disaster this summer, but there’s a chance that it might be kind and skip on over?” Fiona had not realized that she was holding in way too much air until she released it with a loud, tense sigh. “But then what’s an innocent Grease fan when Sandy dresses like that?”

Hunter nodded at her initial question. The girl clearly had no knowledge of video games, so he wasn’t sure why she cared about not being a fake gamer girl to begin with. “The same way you get good at anything else,” Hunter shrugged. “Practice… though guys do have an advantage. Most of us grow up playing video games whereas most girls don’t. So we have extra years of practice.”

“Okay...” Fiona did not really remember her brother being particularly engrossed in video games, but she might have just not been paying attention. Apparently her upbringing had been unusual, so maybe empirical information was not what she should have been looking at here. “Last question, and you can laugh if you want. What genres of games would you recommend that someone like I try to play that don’t fit in your casual category? I don’t need titles or anything if you don’t have any off the top of your head... I’m interested in what’s generally visually appealing. I need inspo.” And she wanted to give something a test run, but didn’t know how to pose that question just yet without some background.

Hunter was still confused as to what was happening, but at least it seemed like it could be an entertaining conversation. At her question, he immediately let out a laugh, shaking his head. “It’s not so much how many games they play but what games they play. I’d be more impressed by a girl playing -insert game he plays here- and that being the only thing she plays than a girl who plays a bunch of ‘games’ but it’s like Animal Crossing, Sims, and Minecraft.”

Fiona had not actually played any of those games, so she felt like a fake fake gamer girl at this point. “Oh, uh... okay... Those games are more casual, right? I guess that kind of makes sense.” It didn’t really make sense from every direction she looked at it, but she really was out of her depth here. “Well what if someone is just starting to play, and isn’t very good? How do you get okay at playing the... not fake games?”

“Well, here’s to hoping that it chills out for a bit and stops giving people such a hard time,” Mack responded before he shook his head as a few polite chuckles escaped. “I don’t have any gossip at hand or in mind right now, but if I ever find myself filled with information, I’ll be sure to remember your offer if I need to share it with anyone. Same thing goes for you if you want to share anything. As for finishing the lyrics, think it’d be for the best to quit while I’m ahead. Because one, not the most appropriate song like I said a little bit ago and two, pretty sure I’d get Summer Nights stuck in so many heads including my own.”

“Here’s to hoping we have a nice but ultimately not-too-complicated summer,” Fiona said with a small smile and an awkward thumbs up. “Cool. I don’t really think I’m bursting to share anything right now, but I don’t want that to offend you or anything.” It was rather nice to be on the same level as someone else for once. “Ha, it’s already stuck in my head, but there’s much we can do to stop that. It’s a pretty risque song too, now that I think about it... Wonder if it’s popular because of that or in spite of it.”

Sometimes? Sometimes Fiona felt lonely even when she was surrounded by campers and counselors everyday. And she was generally okay with that. It wasn’t that she couldn’t stand everyone; they just didn’t get her- even the ones that she liked. Today she was especially keyed up, but not really in a negative way. When she had some time to herself, Fiona decided to take a walk, and got annoyed when she learned that her brother was busy. Before she could really think about it, Fiona was sitting in front of the door to Imogen’s cabin.

It seemed safe, especially because she was on good enough terms with Frankie that it would not be too weird to bump into the wrong cabin counselor instead. Fiona just... missed having a conversation that felt real and right.

Hunter wasn’t expecting to be bothered, let alone by Fiona. Regardless, he looked up at her with a raised eyebrow, letting her speak. “Most people do,” He corrected in response to her comment about knowing less than him about video games. As she continued, he shook his head before eventually nodding. “…I guess that sounds like a deal?”

Fiona clasped her hands together, pleased that Hunter had agreed to her terms. If she went into this expecting to be embarrassed, then he couldn’t make her feel bad. “Good. First question: How many games do you need to play to not be seen as a fake gamer girl? And a follow-up question... What is a fake gamer girl? I know I’m not fake or a gamer at this point, but there seems to be a line.”

“So here’s the thing,” Fiona said with a dramatic sigh. Not particularly considerate of Hunter’s personal time, she decided that her inquiries were worth interrupting whatever Hutner was doing. “I know... less than you about video games.” Translation: she knew next to nothing about the topic. “And they’re literally your favorite. So I have questions, and you’re allowed express permission to laugh at me for being ignorant in exchange for answering them.”

Grace shivered and grimaced, “I love the outdoors, but if one more fucking spider crawls over my foot and surprise tickles me, I swear I’m gonna go on a spider killing spree.”

Fiona nodded. “That’s fair. I feel the same way about the ants. I mind the spiders less... Probably because they get rid of the ants.” She looked down at her own feet. “Maybe sandals weren’t the best idea.”

She nodded, attempting to (and failing) to fight the pleased expression off her face.

“That’s a pretty name. I’m guessing it isn’t after the Shrek character?”

In all honestly, that had been funnier in her head.

"Thanks?" Fiona tried really hard to imagine- even if she wasn’t older than the first Shrek movie- that her parents would name their daughter after an ogre princess and expect to be taken seriously. She understood after that first moment of shock that it was a joke, but it was such a strange joke that it was hard to comprehend. “Well, no... Have you met someone who was named after Fiona in the Shrek movie? Just out of curiosity.”

“Thank you very much! And I couldn’t agree more when it comes to there being more to learn,” Mack replied. “Fiona Coyne, lovely name and great handshake,” he complimented. “You can say that again. Feels like just about everywhere I go, both here and in general, there’s either someone to meet or to reunite with.” He gave her a soft smile as he answered, “Both, actually. Musical fan plus I think I just met someone really cool.”

“Depends on how badly you want to get away from the world, but the past sure does like to catch up to the present,” Fiona said somewhat ominously. She grinned. “Hey, cool! Good for you on both fronts, I guess. I’m not really a hungry for gossip, so you can leave it at that unless you’re bursting. You’re not going to finish those lyrics, though, are you?” She really didn’t need to know what was up with her acquaintances’ love lives. As long as nobody roped her into a teiresome situation, she was happy to listen or stay the heck away.

Robecca wasn’t really sure of who any of those people were, but she nodded as if she did. She could just google them later.

“Oh yeah, we can definitely change subject, no problem! I’m sure I talk way too much.”

She paused.

“I’m sorry, I didn’t introduce myself did I? I’m Robecca.”  

“Introductions are a two way street. I didn’t introduce myself either. I’m Fiona,” she said reasonably. “And you don’t talk too much. Trust me, there are people here who I wish would shut up sometimes. I’m gonna say that you’re not one of them.”

She nodded eagerly, more confident that she wasn’t coming off as an idiot.

“Yeah,Queen’s super popular right now! My da-”

‘He is not your dad’, she reminded herself. She hated having to remind herself of that.

“Um, yeah, so do I! I’ve always looked up to her. Is there any other music you like?

How awkward. “I like a lot of different things, but nothing super unified. I was very into Cris Williamson last summer. I’m on an Ingrid Michaelson binge now, interrupted by a lot of Jacob Collier,” Fiona said, wondering if she needed to provide more examples. “We don’t have to talk about music if it’s uncomfortable. A lot of things make me uncomfortable.”

“Suppose?’ Katie asked, letting out a breathy laugh as she was unsure how that couldn’t make anything but perfect sense. “I mean I guess if the campers really wanna paint rocks again, we could.” She shrugged.

“Yes, Katie. I that’s what I suppose,” Fiona said, not really othering to hide her irritation. “If you tell campers to paint most anything, they’ll think it’s a great idea. Painting is fun.”
