Born in the town of Presque Isle, one of the northermost cities in Maine, Fiona grew up in the dark and the cold and surrounded by nature

She spent a lot of her time exploring the abundant forests and rivers and ravines of Aroostook County as a kid, both with friends and by herself. She was chronically coming home with scrapes and bruises; it was nearly tradition at her grammar schools that at least once per year Fiona Osman would end up in a cast that everyone signed

She didn’t have bad parents in the way some of her friends had bad parents – in fact, her parents weren’t really bad at all on the surface. Her mom was a third-grade teacher at one of the local elementary schools and her dad was head of HR at a bank. They were nice people and, for the most part, chill parents. Her friends always liked coming to her house because no one was yelling at them for making a mess and often her mom or dad, whoever was home, was even willing to do projects with them and take them fun places or out hiking

The problem with Fiona’s parents was that her dad had another side, and it wasn’t a nice one. Usually a pleasant personality to be around (especially for strangers), when he got in moods the best thing to do was steer clear, which Fiona was pretty good at doing but her older brother was not. She witnessed a million fights between them that she typically tried to stay out of, but it always made her feel sick to see it and to feel, on her end, that their dad was being a dick. One of the worst parts of it was that their mom always, without fail, took their dad’s side – something Fiona thinks in retrospect was because she was afraid of him turning it on her

It created a lot of deep-seated issues. Her older brother began seeing their dad only for his bad side, whereas Fiona started seeing him as two different people: the fun dad who watched movies with her and took her on outings and showed her all his favorite music, and the man with an irrational temper who couldn’t be talked out of his bad moods. Not knowing which of them she would get each day and having that unreliability in a parent she was sometimes scared of gave her some trauma she’s never really explored

At eleven, Fiona’s grandma in Aurora Bay broke her hip and didn’t recover well enough to be able to get back to taking care of her husband whose dementia had been growing more severe over the last few months. Her dad went out there to help out for about a month before the decision was made that the whole family would be uprooting and moving across the country so they could be nearby. This was, of course, the worst possible news to Fiona and her brother, who had friends and a life in Presque Isle

Fiona adjusted okay – she’d always been social and made friends relatively easily, and she understood on a logical level why they had to move, but it didn’t stop it from being hard going to a brand new middle school on the other side of the country. It was even worse for her brother, who was a senior in high school at that point with not only a close friend group but a girlfriend he was in love with. He held it against their dad, who – with the added stress of his parents’ situation on top of his penchant for taking his anger out on his loved ones – didn’t handle the whole thing very well and was not quite understanding or compassionate about it the way he should have been. In private their mom sometimes sympathized with them, but she never stood up to defend them when Fiona or her brother got into it with their dad

After high school, Fiona did a year at Seattle Pacific University as an undeclared major before dropping out and choosing to get her Associate's degree at community college first, seeing as she had no idea what she wanted to do with her life yet. She lived at home while she finished that and afterwards moved out finally, getting a job as a kids' swim instructor at Echo Park Pool to sustain herself while she continued trying to find some direction

It's only within the last year that she's decided she wants to work with plants, and enrolled at Aurora Bay Community College once again to get her certificate in horticulture. She does a ton of volunteer work at community gardens while she's working on that

As she’s gotten older, Fiona’s grown further from her parents. Her mom is significantly less bright and happy than she used to be when the kids were little and her dad has remained the same as he always was

There were some people that she often times wished had moved away or maybe walked into the ocean and just never reemerged. Not to die, per say, just to end up getting washed up in some other town far away. Unfortunately for her, the two people in mind just stuck around town. Apart from a mild break when one of them went to prison.

If she had to see them, she ignored them, and if she heard about them from someone else, Hell was always quick to pass judgement.

Fiona's mouth actually drops open. She knows Helena and she knows -- has known, the last six years -- that there's inevitably a grudge there, even now. Maybe you never stop being connected to somebody you were that close with, or maybe Fiona's hypersensitive to these things, or maybe she's just making it up in her head, but she'd felt it, that tension, and it's part of the reason she'd never gone to Helena before now. There was some sort of tacit understanding that if Helena wanted to talk to her, she would. Only Fiona had truly believed in the magic of this serendipitous encounter and she realizes now she'd expected Helena to fall right into step with her.

Fiona presses her lips together and stiffens her posture, retreating back from her state of friendly openness to an equally familiar one that's far chillier.

Sometimes, he likes her so much it makes him stupid. Now was one of those very times, where the dopey grin that was on his face only faltered at the kiss from her. He remained exactly where he was, his head turning at her reassurance, his hand snaking up to the back of her neck so he could steal a proper kiss from her at the tail end of the word difference.

"I'll make Ty grab the beer, it'll first time he's been useful this whole party. Sorry for being a snack psychopath. Hosting's hard, I get why Martha Stewart ended up in the slammer." He didn't, but he knew she had been to jail so, close enough. He leaned back then, his hand moving to her waist as he admired her fully for the first time that evening.

"Goddamn, you look hot as fuck. Way worth dying in the Colosseum over and then coming back to life for."

"No, it totally was," Fiona agrees, though her smile says she's teasing him. And when he kisses her again, properly this time, she ruins it by laughing. She always likes him -- that never goes away, hadn't even gone away when he'd had his mentally ill three months of dating Sasika -- but it feels like he's especially into her right now so she's especially into him.

Also, the costumes have got her all emotional. As soon as his hand dips to her waist and he starts looking her over, she strikes a little pose that's made sillier by the fact she's holding back laughter.

"Oh my god, baby, how did you know I've always wanted someone to say I'm worth turning into a zombie over." Pouting exaggeratedly, she lifts up and kisses his jaw. "You look so handsome and noble and even a little godly, like, you did kind of a pull a Jesus coming back to life like this and you know how I feel about big beefy carpenter Jesus."

There was no therapy like retail therapy. At least that's the excuse Phoebe has always used when she needed some excuse for her credit cards to get a workout. With a few bags piled up in her arms, she shuffled through a display rack of brightly colored bikinis. She already had just about every color bathing suit under the sun, but a few more never hurt. Fiona's eyebrows raise, taken aback less by the thing about the litter of puppies than the idea that six days off is somehow a good reason to take all of them in, and especially by what sounds like a zoo going on in his house.

"Um -- yeah," Fiona says, letting out a slightly surprised laugh. "A sugar glider. And people call me crazy. You do know it's gonna take more than six days to get those puppies, like, settled in and everything, right? I hope you have help."

Leo can never tell if Fiona is ever actually annoyed with him, or if it’s a bit she enjoys playing up to get him to behave. He knew he could be a nuisance - heard it enough growing up that it was a sentiment that tended to stick. Not that it really did bother him. It’s moments like this that Fiona reminds him of his mum a bit, but the reason he’s left so unbothered by her quips is because despite his own mother, Fiona tended to stick around. He liked to give her the benefit of the doubt that somewhere deep down, she was truthfully as fond of him as he was of her. “So bossy - if I’m getting on your nerves so badly why dontcha do something about it, huh?” Even as he speaks, there’s an amused grin on his face, leaning onto his own elbows to meet her halfway. “Yeah, I know,” Leo relents easily, reaching forward to grasp at one of her hands, turning her palm upright, “but you’re cute when you get all moody. Your nose gets all red. It’s a very becoming look on you, Fi.” Lazily, he strokes along the lines that adorn along the palm of her hand. There was a whole bit he’d been meaning to do, but he’s too busy just admiring her now. He’d never been able to think with his brain long, anyway. “No scam. Compliments are free for you.” Gaze flickering from her hand up to meet her own line of sight. “Forgive me?”

Fiona frowns at him. The thing about Leo is, she does think he's kind of sleazy sometimes, what with the thing about her nose and telling her she's cute when she's moody, which is so weirdly condescending but in a way that kind of turned her on when she first started sleeping with him, and he gives a vibe like she's only one of plenty of people he's said this to probably in the last 48 hours alone, but she still likes the attention.

It's always been her hamartia, that craving for attention.

She gives Leo a deep pout before she answers, so he knows she's kind of upset but in a way that can be soothed by fawning exactly how he's doing now.

"Fine," she sighs. "You should make it up to me, you know. It would be the gentlemanly thing to do after making me feel so neglected."

There is disbelief in Blake's eyes at Fiona's claim. From the excited pitch of her voice and the mimosa in hand, she wonders then how long it will be until the day-drinking catches up to Fiona. It isn't her job to chastise her, though, so she just laughs it off. "As long as you're careful and hydrating. Day drunk is much different than night drunk." The crowd doesn't help either, but Blake knows she is an adult capable of watching over herself.

If she could trust anyone to do that, it would be her.

"Aren't gladiator's Roman?" she muses aloud but barely wastes a second before waving her hand to dismiss that thought. "No, no, forget that. You both looked great. No hint of slacking whatsoever. I hope there's pictures of the party because everyone was amazing." It had been a good time, and the mild headache she had to push through the following day during the family's father day shenanigans had been entirely worth it.

"That was a misunderstanding, but the best kind. Figure the theme name meant we had to all dress as him or Lu… and I dug out a picture of him as a toddler-" one she'd kept alongside one she found of Tallulah and one of them all, "-and recreated the early 2000s toddler fashion as best as I could."

"I know day drunk is different," Fiona insists, giggling a little at the very fact of Blake giving her this warning like she's still too young to have figured that out on her own. Maybe some people might not have liked that, but Fiona loves it. She thinks maybe Blake knows that, too.

Her cheeks, already flushed from the mimosas, get warmer at the correction which, now it's been pointed out, feels stupid enough to make her laugh.

"Oh yeah," she says, "they are Roman, aren't they? The colosseum is totally in Rome. I hope I didn't say Greek to too many people," she snickers, covering her mouth.

"That's so funny you thought that was the theme, but whatever, you still killed it. Thadd showed me a baby pic recently of his that actually made me sob it was so cute."

"He'd never go for it," Deanie finds herself answering without hesitation, no doubt in her mind that Everett would immediately turn down the suggestion.

For everything she loved about Everett -- charming, smart, focused -- he liked to be a show off. He definitely enjoyed when the attention was on him and to bypass a party where he was fifty-percent the center would be against his nature.

That, and he loved to impress her parents. Her mother would claim to suffer a lifetime of heartbreak if Deanie even suggested scaling anything back -- especially if that scaling back was eliminated to zero.

"I think I'm going rogue on my wedding dress, though," she confesses, letting out a deep breath because saying it out loud caused her stomach to clench.

"That tulle-y one I showed you is out. I picked something more me."

Fiona grins brightly -- she can almost feel Deanie's angst talking about this rogue wedding dress, and at once it makes her both happy and sad for her. She's thrilled Deanie's found the courage to put her foot down about her dress, but it shouldn't have to feel like such a scary thing.

"Sorry but thank god," she laughs, "that one with the tulle was so not you at all. It was pretty but, like..." she grimaces, "you know? Just not it. Let's see the new one, and please say you'll let me help you pick out shoes. Unless you have them already. Which I'd hope you would have told me."
