Yes, a bay leaf goes into the food while it’s prepared.

No, you are not supposed to serve the bay leaf, but it’s harmless.

People who have no idea what is pictured above have never tried to prepare any dish that calls for bay leaf.

No recipe I’ve ever read calling for ‘bay leaf’ failed to also instruct to ‘remove bay leaf before serving’.
