The Expanse 6.04: The women get shit done
New year, new day, so let’s talk about my observations on this episode! I posted about my reservations about this episode’s pacing yesterday, so now it’s time to talk about what I enjoyed and other observations.
- The female characters have been carrying this season and I am loving it. May it piss off all the internet dudebros.
- I thought Sanjrani was trying to make the best of a bad situation on Ceres, but now they’re a Marco loyalist? Okay, then. Doesn’t line up with what we’ve seen so far, but go off I guess.
- Please tell me Lucky Earther survived. I think it did, but if it turns out that kitty is dead, we riot.
- Why is the Laconia stuff here??? Also, parental supervision on this planet is really lax.
- More Bobbie and Amos bonding, I love it.
- So many scenes feel about thirty seconds too long. Did we need that drawn out beat of Clarissa putting salt on her food? Is it foreshadowing? Am I meant to be concerned?
- I still haven’t sorted out all my feelings on the scene between Naomi and Holden. It’s great, mature relationship writing and I’m glad to see that in a genre show. Both Holden and Naomi made great points which made sense for their characters.
- Writers, please let Naomi speak to another woman. You can do it! I believe in you!
- Monica was one of my heroes of the episode. The sequence she directed on Ceres was great, but where she really shined was her scene with Avasarala. Chrisjen is a fabulously dressed queen of snark and I love her, but she does need someone around her to speak truth to power, be it Monica, Nancy (RIP) or Bobbie. Amazing as she is, Avasarala is still the head of a government which has upheld oppressive power structures for generations. Her ‘Earth must come first’ attitude has been all about maintaining the status quo. That’s fine when Earth’s opponent is independent and equally powerful (Mars), but when it comes to the Belt, she and Earth do need to do some soul searching. Chrisjen may have come a long way from actually torturing Belters, but when Monica spoke about needing to see the enemy as human if you want to be seen as human yourself… *sips tea*
- Okay, now for the ‘meat’ of this episode: CAMINA AND MICHIO, MY FIERCE QUEENS. The moment Michio mentioned being an emergency med tech in 602, I knew it would come back in some way. And lo and behold, it did, with an incredibly graphic field amputation. Michio showed strength and steadiness while Camina and Walker were out of their element. I did turn my face away from the screen when she pulled out the knife and started hacking off Josep’s arm, because I’d like to not throw up my breakfast thanks.
- Camina Drummer proves once again that she is the queen of speeches. I was swooning throughout the entire speech. “Live in shame, die empty.” My body was not ready.
I can’t wait to see what happens next episode… because so much still needs to happen.
