she listens to her talk, eyebrows scrunching up in confusion. she was someone important. allison, who died saving her friends. allison, whose name made the whole pack go silent. the ghost of a girl that malia never got the chance to be friends with was sitting on her bed. she had so many questions for her — more than allison would probably want to answer. so many questions, and malia could only manage to ask—

“ Why? Why me, when the rest of the pack is…? Do you not want to see them? ”

❝ yeah, that’s me. ❞

; her nose scrunches again at the more difficult question. she could tell her either of the truths; that she doesn’t have that much control over where she appears, or that she’s not sure she wants to see the people she loves. it’s not like she’s tangible. she can’t hug lydia or stiles or scott; she can’t make them any promises to stay. it would be too fleeting, too painful when it was over and she was gone again... but that’s a huge load of emotional bullshit to drop on a stranger, so she just shrugs and goes with the first explanation.

❝ i don’t get to pick and choose where i end up. i can think of a place, doesn’t mean i’m sure to land there, though. it’s a pain in the ass, but at least i’m sentient. being totally dead is scary... ❞

it was against her better judgement, letting a stranger step so close with no weapon drawn, but beth was tired. exhausted. hungry. three days had passed without a single sign of water or food, and sleep was no more abundant when her body was merely running on fumes. of course she was stupid in allowing her guard to fall, but this stranger looked to be in the same boat as she. those tired eyes, the dirty hair. they were one in the same, alone and lost.

❝ that gas station up there picked dry like the rest of ‘em? ❞

❝ well beth, lucky for you i’m not a thief anyway. ❞

; there’s a hint of indignation behind her words and she relaxes her arm, hip jutting out to let her elbow rest flush to it. the poor girl - beth, her name is beth - looks half dead and hurt all over, a little like she remembers the few children they’d had in their fairly small group looking in the last scary days before they... well, that was a long time ago now. in a rare moment of pity, allison pulled her half empty water bottle from the side pouch of her pack and tossed it to the other girl after taking a long swig from it herself.
