One of the greatest memories I have from FIT is the freedom through its clubs to showcase art in the form of dance. I became president of the Salsa Club in 2013.
The above photo was taken on the seventh floor lounge with some of my fellow Presidential Scholars. We had won first place in a diversity project we presented, about bridging the gap between food and culture in New York City.

I was a member of the FIT Women's tennis team for five years. I was a player for the first two years and a manager for the last three years. I loved all the players, our adventures, and especially our beloved coach Stephanie Bird. We usually came in first in the city division and second in the regional division. One year we won regionals and went to nationals to compete in Midland, Texas. We also had a lot of fun. Every year we scrimmaged against SUNY New Paltz and climbed Mount Mohonk.

I moved to New York City from Vancouver to attend FIT in the Summer of 2006. FIT brought me to the most incredible city and introduced me to my forever friends ... half of them I actually met during orientation week! I found my passion in knitwear at FIT, a focus I have continued to pursue through the course of my career. I always credit the amazing knitting lab and professors for giving me the fundamentals and confidence that have been the base of my expertise!

We came to New York from four tiny towns across the U.S., meeting on the Staten Island Ferry for our FIT orientation! Thus forming a lifelong, life-affirming friendship.
The unique location of FIT, the faculty standard of working within the industry, and job placement availability were instrumental in opening doors for our careers in fashion design and merchandising.
Cherie still has her and her husband’s very successful design company in Manhattan. Haidee was senior vice president and director of a bra design company and now works on her own creative design enterprise. Rochelle, a buyer for many years became an art teacher, and I too taught fashion classes at two Central New York colleges including Syracuse University, after having my own small couture business.
The four of us continue to spend time together every few months, sometimes visiting The Museum at FIT and old haunts in New York. I’m always thankful for FIT!

My portfolio was 5 by 4 feet. Taking it home almost every night on the subway is my wildest memory! The turnstiles were hell. Also the escalators presented infinite problems.

I have such fond memories of working in the Fashion Buying and Merchandising office with Dean Newton Godnick. I'm from a very small town in Pennsylvania, and the city was overwhelming to me. I also didn't get on-campus housing. Dean Godnick, the entire staff in the FBM office and my fellow student co-workers gave me a new family!

Myself and my classmates Geoff Kimmons and Henry Ripati would throw impromptu dance parties in the snack bar or an empty classroom. We became known as The Gigmeisters. The president and security let us do this because the academic pressure was so high.

I lived in Nagler Hall on the 9th floor my freshman year. We had the BEST groups of girls from all over the world, and many of us are still good friends! Here is a picture of me bestie and I in 1999. Living in the dorms was one of my favorite times of my life!

I moved to FIT all by myself from Delaware at the age of 18. I didn’t know anyone, but quickly made friends, all in Nagler. I am still in touch with them today and am so thankful for my experiences while at FIT. My college and professional career are forever linked, as I now work for Michael Kors.

In 1977, I was team captain of FIT’s chapter of the American Advertising Federation. In the annual AAF competition that year, the assignment was to create a full campaign complete with advertising, marketing, and media for Sprite. In addition to preparing a written plan, we had to present it to a group of judges, who were professionals from the industry. We created a drink called a “SpriteZer” which was Sprite mixed with white wine. A bit on the sweet side, but it was our way of expanding Sprite beyond the soft drink market. As part of our presentation, we actually served the SpriteZer to the judges. (Did I mention it was 10 in the morning?)
We were the only 2-year school among the 15 schools in the Northeast district. But we won first place! It was a first for FIT and a tremendous honor considering the schools we were up against: Syracuse and Pace, to name two. At the national AAF event in San Francisco, we didn’t do nearly as well, but FIT and its Advertising and Communications program was now on the map despite only being a 2-year school at the time. I credit FIT’s amazing faculty. Dr. Arthur Winters was the department head; Fran Lacher and Shirley Milton were our immediate AAF advisers. Their real world experience made all the difference in how we competed. For me, that experience helped launch my career in advertising—one that lasted nearly 30 years as a writer/creative director working on top national brands.
