María Luisa López Sardá + Javier Vellés - El umbráculo de Cercedilla. Madrid, Spain. 1976-1979

The Fantastical Explorations of Smout Allen
Speleological Pantographs. Envirographic Instruments. Neo-Natures. These are some of the territories that British architects Mark Smout and Laura Allen have carved out for their design practice, which roves omnivorously across the topics of landscape, technology, science fiction, and politics. As faculty members at The Bartlett, guest editors at the Architectural Review, and frequent collaborators with Geoff Manaugh of BLDGBLOG, Smout Allen have explored the “landscape futures” that emerge as human enterprises transform the planet in increasingly radical ways. They pivot naturally between complex representational drawings, highly technical models, and scientific instruments of their own design. Smout Allen will be working with Manaugh on a project for this year’s Chicago Architecture Biennial this October.
