Our purpose at concerts:

Bring visible inclusivity to shows to make everyone feel safe and loved by fellow concert goers.

Going to concerts has always been an exciting hobby for me. Being LGBTQAP+ and a POC, it’s really important to me to bring representation into a space you are instantly connected with hundreds of other people. There are too many people in this fandom (and people in general, really) who are unsafe to express their identities or to simply exist as a minority. We should not have to hide ourselves.

Where to get your gear:

About two hours to an hour and a half before the doors open, I’ll be hanging around the lines and handing stuff out. If you have your own pride or BLM stuff, bring it! The more representation, the better.

Why pride and black lives matter?

For me, my hobbies should absolutely be politically conscious. People should be who they are without feeling unsafe or like they have apologize for it, and it needs to be talked about as long as they are being treated as radical ideas. No one should feel unsafe in such an intimate place. Our interests connect us as people and who we are should not be a matter of politics, and bringing black lives matter and pride gear to these venues is important to normalize our existence and to ensure fans feel safe, involved, and validated.

I’m still looking for people to help pass out and/or provide flags. I want to reach as far as we can and there’s only a few of us involved on this side of the project, so if you want to be part of the planning, can help pass out any amount of gear, or are willing to buy/make/etc flags, please contact me! This project is still in very early stages and I would love help with passing things out.

If you love this project but dislike me or anyone involved for whatever reason, don’t be afraid to do your own (or consider participating by accepting a flag or sticker anyway)! The goal is to solidify concerts as safe spaces for everyone, and personal issues are no reason to keep that from happening.

IMPORTANT: I am not charging for any of this gear. It’s all free. If someone, either pretending to be me or using my resources, is asking you to pay for things they are handing out or for donations to help with future projects (we have our own wishlist here if you want to donate), DO NOT GIVE THEM ANY MONEY. I’m doing this for free and we want this project to be as accessible as possible. If someone unaffiliated is asking for money or you want to give money to me regardless of this information, do what you like in terms of monetary exchange, but just remember that I will be around the venue giving stuff out, no charge.

Three, perhaps four tours to keep track is NOT going to be easy, but we wholeheartedly believe in making every single concert in 2020 a safe space for ALL fans (LGBTQ+ and other), and so THE GAME IS ON! Rainbow Direction is going solo and this blog will be your Rainbow Hub.

Get your rainbow, pride and blm flags ready, plan your projects, but most of all: DON’T FORGET TO SIGN UP TO LET US KNOW so we can advertise your project for you, and help you organize meetups with like minded people. Happy couples and lifelong friendships have been formed at these meetups, don’t miss your chance at an encounter with the best people in the world, we really recommend that you reach out and organize one.

I just saw what happened at Dua Lipa’s concert in Shanghai to the fans waving pride flags and dancing. They were violently grabbed and kicked out. The videos are horrifying. They cut off the lights so you can’t see much but you can hear the screams and cries.

I don’t want to read ever again that bringing pride flags to shows is just a way to grab the artist’s attention and get noticed. Bringing flags to shows means standing up for what is right, and reassuring LGBTQ people around you that you’ll stand by them, that you’re safe to be around. But it can also put a target on your back.

Bringing flags to shows is fucking brave, in some places even more so than others. I admire anyone who has the courage to do so.

getting closer and closer to the concert. i was so anxious earlier putting these together because its TWO DAYS from now. massive butterflies as i type this!!

You are wasting your time with the flags, your are not going to a Harry or 1D show. Niall's show is an actual concert where the MUSIC takes precedence over everything. His crowd is diverse with lots of different "couples" and an older generation who are there to enjoy the music. Stop trying to make his show about the damn flag, it does not belong at his shows unless it is to take a picture with him!

I’m just gonna reiterate an expand something I wrote back in March when I first made this blog and something that’s been in both of the announcement posts.

I go to concerts because I feel the most comfortable at them. I can sing as loud as I please and dance in the crowd, all to my favourite music. In this case, I have the privilege to see my most favourite person on the planet and feel these things. I can be the most unapologetically myself at concerts and will be even more so when I see Niall. This absolutely includes being brown and being LGBT+

I attend concerts frequently (not just 1D related) and actively participate in multiple fandoms. I’m here to have fun and feel good, and sometimes I have to fight for visibility being a POC and being queer and I see other people struggling to connect those parts of themselves for the same things I enjoy. This is because the things we like are usually “meant” to be enjoyed by specific people (cough cough AKA white cishets cough) that are not us. 

Thankfully, it’s been easy to be queer in the One Direction fandom, but it’s not always been so blatant. The reason people are now so open about their sexuality and gender is because they’d seen how positive and accepting other fans are, and the fans are even sometimes why people are comfortable exploring who they could be in those terms. This has been cultivated by the boys being at least somewhat vocal about not giving a fuck about fan’s orientations and by other fans making sure they’re loud in their identities, which includes bringing flags to concerts.

It’s important to me and to so many other people to be able to see these flags and stickers (sn: it’s so so fucking funny how whenever we get messages it’s always about the rainbows even though we have BLM stuff too).

It’s important because it shows decades (read: centuries) of perseverance and fighting to be visible and accepted as ourselves and not backing down for a damn minute. I refuse to forget what those before me had done with hopes that not only they themselves were treated better, but that future generations were too. I will celebrate this part of myself for them and for other people who feel insecure in who they are or who feel a little bit alone. It’s imperative to continue reinforcing acceptance even in spaces where it’s been established because it has to be loud and visible so people cannot mistake the message. 

You will not make room for racists or homophobes to grow with their negative affirmations if you’re already filling it with positive affirmations.

That being said: I’m not making his show about anything. I’m there to listen to his music and have a good time quietly but visibly supporting myself and others. The flags and stickers will not detract him even once percent because it’s his show. Nobody is going there for the sole purpose of waving a flag or donning a sticker or interrupting his show to get his attention (and by proxy, getting everyone else’s attention). 

It will not alter what his music means and it will not alter his performance. If it alters your enjoyment, you might need to examine yourself and figure out why the fuck your nosy ass is so mad about people around you holding rainbows and saying that black lives matter.

spent so much time today assembling these flags. in the last pic, the big box is FULL all the way up to where its visible and those two smaller boxes behind it are also packed. the big box is like 2ftx1.5ftx2ft (it looks smaller on camera)

all of this took like 9 hours and we're NOT even DONE. 3.6k down..... still have about 1.9k to go. thanks to @captainneill for coming over tonight to help put these together, otherwise i would have had a fucking heart attack trying to do it by myself like id planned (with some help from my mom and sister)

so fucking ready tho!!! remember, if you're seeing niall in clarkston, mi on august 28th, we're passing out rainbow and blm gear for FREE. we'll be around the gates before they open!

A pride flag isn’t just a flag.

Being LGBTQ+ and walking into a space with a pride flag, you feel instantly safer and more secure.

This goes for any flag, trans, bi, ace, etc. They are all important and have so much meaning, it’s not just an aesthetic for an identity, it’s a clear, concise symbol of pride & acceptance.
