Food Culture Project

Drinking tea is a part of our life in my family, the tea bags were made by resin and glasses. It is showing the moment when tea leaves are put in boiling water, from dry to wet, from fold to unfold, from compressed to blooming, from clear to colored… Now, this moment is frozen in these tea bags, and that’s the reason I named it “Inside of tea”. The teaspoon is used as a handle here, the box is covered by a bamboo curtain splint, both of them are the representative of traditional tea culture in China.

I chose Chinese tea for my project topic, as tea has a long history in China, and my family is engaged in selling Chinese tea for many years so I get to know tea since I was young. We drink tea during many parts of the day such as at meals for good health or simply for pleasure. In other words, Chinese tea is meaningful for me and my family, Tea is very popular in China, particularly in the south of China.

Week 6 | Draft idea of Design Recipe

I decided to go with the egg recipe which related to a political problem in Hong Kong - The government try to impose an embargo on free speech.

I got inspirations from <The Wall> by Pink Floyd a lot.

Reflection

The theme of this semester is very interesting. We explore the wonderful relationship between food and communication design.

In the lecture, we learned how food inspires designer and how the designer uses food to create their incredible artwork. We saw lots of design from other famous designers.

In the studio, we tried to design and create our own food artworks.

In the first few weeks, we created some artwork in class. In week 4, we cut out some food images in the magazines and created few portraits with other classmates. In week 5, we had a presentation on the class to show our own food culture. In week 6, we use foods to create our own brush and tried to draw some interesting drawings.

Based on the presentation in week 5, we started designing a production for our final food exhibition. The theme of our class is a souvenir store. I decided used handcraft to show my culture. Because my nationality is China, so I introduced the Chinese cuisine and named my work ‘Food from Pandaria’.

This course helps me a lot. I realized an ordinary object in our lives can be our inspiration of design. Otherwise, the course also improves my thinking and skill of design.

‘Foods From Pandaria’

Food is a prescription for homesick. 3 years in Melbourne cannot change my taste.

Food in China is diverse. People from the coastal areas love light taste and seafood; people from central China prefer spicy; Muslim from northwest create unique halal food.

I introduce two of my favourite foods in my project: siu mai and xiaolongbao. I use handcraft show these foods. I use a bamboo steamer to place them, so please open them. You also can untie the string of the scrolls to read some introduction about them.

Process/Food Culture

I place one piece of glass at the bottom and decorated with some dry roses and chrysanthemums, dye the resin with the color look like tea.

In order to display the traditional culture of tea, I also use the Chinese teaspoon as the mold 

when it was dry I wiped more resin on the edge to refine, finally I felt satisfied with the mockup.

I am going to make more glass tea bags through this so that they can be a set.

Food Culture/ Work In Progress I made 3 ancient Chinese scrolls to show the introduction of my work. The bamboo steamer is painted black & white, and the cap is made to a panda. One layer of the bamboo steamer is a map of China which is made of colour papers.

Food Culture/Work In Progress I coloured the dumplings(Xiaolongbao). I made the Shiu Mai by using cottons, papers and string.

Food Culture/Work in progress I used clay to make the dumplings(Xiaolongbao), and it took 2 days to dry. I bought a bamboo steamer from an Asian glossary and add fake grass on the bottom.

Reflection

I was interviewed by a graduate student who called Zhang Yanchao in RMIT’s Department of design. She is now working for a software development company. For me personally, her work is the enlightenment of my study design. I am determined to learn the design of the wishes because of her image to me, so I chose to interview her five questions. In the medium of the display of the questions, I chose to fold the form of the map. I choose this way there are two reasons, one is paper texture is thin, easy to carry. The second reason is the way of straight to fold the paper is so boring, so I used the spinning way to rotating folds. I used her work as a positive and negative background, which both demonstrated problems and displayed works.

Week 13- Overall Reflection of Communication Design Study In The First Semester

This semester is a start point of my design study and Communication Design class. Form the lecture, I learnt lots of knowledge about Communication Design. I learnt some history of Communication Design and they really inspired my design. I also saw a lot of excellent designs form some famous designers in the lecture class. From the workshop, I learnt some interesting design skill. We used some common materials to create some creative design. The workshop is my favourite class in this semester. I became more creative and increased my creativity.

Week 13 "Online-Reflective Journal" Reflection

The “ Online-Reflective Journal” project is a very interesting project. We need to post our weekly communication design study process on an application named Tumblr. I post all my works from my workshop class excludes week 7 because we didn’t have class. I also post my work process of my project. I reblog 5 other student's posts. This project help me record and review my communication design study. I also saw a lot of nice works and received some useful advisements form other student according to Tumblr. This application increase my interest on design, and I think I will keep using it.

Communication Design Studies | Week 12 | Project 3 | Ask Me Anything!

This is a paper model making of a cosmetic set packaging. Reason of doing a cosmetic set is because my interviewed creative, Saraswati is an outstanding makeup artist in Malaysia.

The name of this cosmetic product, “Queen Of Luna”, is taken from the name of Saraswati’s Instagram and Facebook page. A “Tim Burton style” typeface is chosen for the product’s logotype because her style - fantasy and horror, reminds me of Tim Burton’s film. The overall colour of the packaging used is simply black and hot pink, again, to represent her style.

This cosmetic set consists of 5 items. Each interview questions and answers are placed in each items, starting from the foundation, eye shadow, eye liner, blush and to the lipstick. The sequence of opening each items are according to the steps of makeup process. To make people understand where to start at, a user guide is created. It is designed with simple layout of texts and images of her breathtaking masterpieces. The whole cosmetic set only used copy paper (280 gsm, 200 gsm, 140 gsm) and black foam core.

I hope this cosmetic set gives people an experience of her art style. The first sight of looking at the cool combination of black and hot pink and the logotype will attract one to her style. Opening the box, a fragrant feminine perfume smell will lure one to come into her kingdom. After that, one will immediately surrender on her breathtaking masterpiece upon looking at the user guide. Following the user guide, one will get to know the how, what and why of her creativity. Behind the scenes of the makeup process is mentioned too in the interview. One is getting closer to her now, after feeling this wonderful atmosphere of Saraswati.

I really enjoyed a lot throughout this project. I found so much fun in making models and have learnt a lot of tricks in making model that looks more professional. I am satisfied with the outcome but I believe there are still rooms for improvement like a more detail cutting and crafting, more accurate measurement, more weight of each item to make it close to reality and the way of doing 3D cylindrical object. Overall, it is a good model but it is still far from perfection. Apart from that, I think I did great in my time management where I get to finish what I should done every week according to my own schedule. For planning, I think I should do a more planning and design thinking before entering the making process. Case like making the user guide on the last minute should not happen again.
