“cigarets are like hamsters: they are fine, until you put it in your mouth and light it on fire. True”
I’m gonna be sooo honest I think a lot of the struggles of disabled people are a result of capitalism & colonialism rather than the disabilities themselves.
Like yeah it sucks to deal with the symptoms, but— the loneliness? The financial struggles? The damage to our self worth? Those aren’t natural.
It’s this idea that we have to be self sufficient that fucks us over: if had a village, if we had stronger communities, we wouldn’t be so isolated. The expectation that we alone are responsible for paying our rent, rearing our children, keeping up with our household chores was manufactured and sold to us by capitalism.
There are also the rigid gender roles of man and woman that we cannot fit into, being neither a physically capable and domineering head of the household or an endless source of labor that is both pretty and sexually productive. These are not universal: they’ve spread from a small selection of cultures that overtook everywhere else like an invasive species.
And with them, the beliefs of Christianity. That suffering is divinely ordained, a punishment for wrongdoing and a moral lesson to be learned. That scientific advancement, medical treatment, should be halted as blasphemy. That death comes when it is meant to and should not be fought. That we ought to pray our pain away.
There are people out there that would have valued us. That would have accepted and embraced that we deserve to exist regardless of what we have to give. That would support us in a network of mutual genorosity and interdependence, that wouldn’t see us as burdens. That would actively find ways for us to contribute— not because we have to to be worthy, but for our own fulfillment and creativity!!
May the world be returned to those who lead it with compassion and wisdom instead of greed and hate. May the world my ancestors created crumble beneath their feet and give rise to love and mutualism again.
Every time you make a "historians will say they were roommates" joke, you have to buy a queer historian a restorative café beverage of their choice
