total eclipse of the heart (mp) // fletcher & corinne
[Corinne smiles and shakes her head. Any other person might have been frustrated by Fletch’s tendency to take things entirely too seriously, but somehow Corinne was charmed by it. She didn’t mind have to explain things or elaborate. She didn’t bother to pick her words carefully because she knew it wouldn’t help him to tip-toe around his occasional lack of understanding.] Or… even before that. Like this weekend. If you want. [She looks up at the moon which is now beginning to look red.] Crazy. I can totally see why you’re into this stuff, Fletch. It’s amazing.
[Fletcher drains the end of his cup, the liquid now lukewarm as it trickles down his throat. His gaze drops down to their hands, still intertwined, and it stuns him. The fact that the action feels so comfortable is unsettling; it's such an alien feeling. But as his eyes drift upwards, to Corinne's face, and he sees her smiling back at him, Fletch remembers why he's here, why he's pushed himself out of his comfort zone.] I'd -- yes. I would really like that. [He tilts his head upwards.] The moon is about to reach its peak, I think. You know, this is the first of four consecutive lunar eclipses. The last tetrad started in May of 2003, and previous one was even longer ago, in 1985. It's a pretty spectacular sight.

I think it would take… it would take a lot for me to be uncomfortable with you, Fletch. [Corinne smiles and takes another drink, following his gaze upward.] My advice? Don’t worry about it too much. Just be you. I like you. As a concept and as a person. So, yeah… you’re doing fine. [She looks over at him and grins, running her thumb over his.] Gladly. But, before the next eclipse, maybe? [She gives a small laugh before taking another sip of her drink.] I’d love to.
[Fletcher glances towards Corinne, a sheepish grin on his face. She likes me, he thinks, Or at least, she claims that she does. There's no reason to doubt the veracity of her words, is there? He tries not to let it consume him - the second-guessing and the lack of conviction - but in a world where, by in large, people remain a mystery to him, Fletch isn't always successful.] I would be quite disappointed in myself and my efforts if hadn't managed to arrange another engagement between now and October. That's -- it's when the next lunar eclipse will occur. Unless -- [He pauses, trawling through his brain for the appropriate snippet of information.] -- April 29th. There is a solar eclipse on that evening, though it's only partial, and will only be visible in parts of the southern hemisphere. [Fletch takes a breath, and as he exhales, his hand squeezes Corinne's lightly.] I think that's a much more appropriate time frame, no?
total eclipse of the heart (mp) // fletcher & corinne
[Corinne smiles as Fletcher takes her hand. She knows not to have any particular expectations for the night, but she can tell that he really wants to try and move outside of his comfort zone. Maybe for his own personal growth and maybe it’s just because he genuinely likes her that much. Either way, she thought it sweet that he would put so much effort into making sure everything went well.] Oh, no. Don’t be sorry. That wasn’t presumptuous at all. I’m glad you did. [She reaches out to his hand and takes it again, twining their fingers together and smiling at him.] If anything is too forward, I’ll let you know, okay? And if anything’s too much for you, please tell me? [She smiles at him reassuringly as she brings her cup to her lips and takes a sip of her hot chocolate.] Everything so far has been… perfect, Sully.
O-okay. Well, that is a definite relief. [Fletcher smiles warmly as Corinne slips her hand back into his, and he allows himself to commit more fully to the contact, gripping with more purpose. It's intentional this time.] I would appreciate that. I'd hate to think that I'd made you uncomfortble in anyway and remained blindly oblivious to the fact. [He takes another mouthful of his drink, and lets his eyes drift skywards, trying to gauge when the moon will be at its peak.] Perfect? Hmmm, that is a high bar to set. Hopefully I can continue to maintain that standard over a substantial period of time. I m-mean-- [Fletcher stutters the words out.] -- obviously, that's -- it's -- on the assumption that you would be open to doing something of this ilk again?
sheer coincidence (mp) || fletch and leah
[Leah found herself taken aback by Fletcher once again, this time because of his bluntness. His compliment seemed genuine, without any ulterior motive added on to it, which was… a really pleasant feeling. She smiles as thanks.] I’ll agree with you there, Corinne is wonderful. She’s actually the most wonderful person I know. And I’m glad she has someone like you, even if right now all you two are doing is getting dinner and looking at the sky. [She shakes her head, nervously laughing.] Gosh, I’m sorry if that’s too forward. You two haven’t even had a first date yet. I just… I just really love my sister, and it means a lot to me that there’s someone else out there who appreciates her almost as much as I do. [It’s easier to be open around Fletcher, as opposed to other people on campus. She understands social conventions, and has no problem using them, but it was really nice to just be able to talk to someone without that barrier there. It was easy to see why Corinne liked him.]
[Fletcher lets out a sigh, relieved that Leah hadn't misinterpreted his words. There have been countless occasions in which people - friends, acquaintances, strangers - have taken Fletcher's words at face value, only to incorrectly assume his meaning and end up either offended or inappropriately pleased.] I really do -- appreciate her, I mean. [He finally takes a moment to look across at Leah and show her a small smile.] Corinne, she's ... she doesn't judge me for my idiosyncrasies, or seem perturbed by the impact my-- my condition has on the way in which I socialise. [He blinks, pointedly, screwing up his brow.] That's something that's very important to me. She is important to me. And I, uh [Fletcher's voice drops, nearing whisper.] -- I don't want my actions to cause our existing relationship to disintegrate. I suppose, what I'm trying to say, is that I'm "afraid of messing up". That's the right turn of phrase, is it not?
total eclipse of the heart (mp) // fletcher & corinne
[Corinne nods, her head rubbing against his arm.] Yeah, I think that would be a good place. [She smiles and squeezes his arm tighter.] Thank you, Fletch. [She looks up at him, sucking in her lips out of nervousness.] You’re doing fine, don’t worry—amazing, actually. So thank you. [Corinne smiles once again and returns her head to his shoulder. Once they’ve made it to the cafe and ordered they’re drinks, they continue on to the park. Upon arrival, she moves away, but her hand lingers on his bicep.] So. Where in the park should we go? The play structure? Bench? Grass…?
[Fletcher takes a small sip of his hot chocolate, careful not to scald his lip, as they enter the park. His face drops slightly as Corinne puts a bit of distance between them, but he quickly covers it with the furrowing of his brow.] Perhaps ... [Fletch scans the park, attempting to conclude which area would be best. There are a few pockets of people scattered around, sitting in groups on the grass - likely having made similar plans to watch the eclipse.] -- there. [His eyes settle on an empty bench.] I think we'll have an optimal view from here. [Without second thought, Fletch takes Corinne's hand in his own and leads her over. It's only once he lets go and settles down on the bench that he realises how forward he'd been.] I'm-- sorry, Corinne, that was rather, uhm, presumptuous of me, to take your hand like that.

Andy: Nae worries, pal. Have fun at dinner, yeah? Order yourselves a nice desert and pretend it's from me.
Fletcher: Your British vernacular never ceases to confuse me.
Fletcher: I will try, thank you. I'm sure I'll be in touch with the results in due course.
sheer coincidence (mp) || fletch and leah
[Leah’s smile gets even wider as Fletcher starts talking. He was often just so unabashedly passionate about the subjects he cared about, that much was clear from just a few afternoons spent in the same room as him, and Leah loved it. Even with the kids she counseled at summer camp, she rarely saw such pure enthusiasm about… well, anything. It seemed that the world was so afraid of being judged, that everyone was more concerned with hiding from each other.] Hey, it’s totally fine. It’s awesome that you care so much about this stuff. Corinne definitely likes that about you, she can’t stop grinning whenever you start talking. [She hopes she isn’t overstepping her bounds, but it was obvious Fletcher was nervous, and Leah wanted to reassure him that there was no need to be. If he hadn’t asked her soon, she had been thinking about conspiring with Marcus and Andy to get the two together, for all of their sakes.] Don’t worry, Fletch. [She offers a comforting smile.] I won’t tell her about it. I’ll even pretend I never heard it. But, if you did ask her - and you didn’t hear this from me - she definitely would say yes.
[There's something about Leah - perhaps her warm demeanour - that relaxes Fletcher, if only a little. People make him inherently uneasy (through no fault of their own; Fletcher knows he has atypical difficulties when it comes to reading people), and too often, Fletch finds himself retreating and avoiding conversation with others.] Sh-she does? That's, it's ... hmm. I see. [He runs his fingers under the sleeve of his sweater, adjusting the buttons on his shirt cuff. Fletch doesn't look up as he contemplates Leah's promise of silence. He's grateful, and--] You're nice. [The words come out in far too blunt a fashion, and Fletcher has to consciously make an effort to elaborate, to save from sounding abrasive. Or even just plain weird.] I just .. I mean, I appreciate that. And you are nice, as a person, I mean. I don't feel nervous around you, not like I usually do -- so you must be affable. Although, I don't know why I am so surprised by this fact. Your sister is wonderful, and you are from the same stock, so the conclusion I've reached was verging on inevitable.
total eclipse of the heart (mp) // fletcher & corinne
[Corinne smiles and tucks her hair behind her ear.] No, that’s fine. That sounds awesome. [She giggles and turns away for a moment. When she looks back at him, she brings her hand to his arm. She leaves it lingering there for a moment, trying her best to gauge his reaction to the contact, before she loops her arm through his and leans into him while they continue to walk. Resting her head against his shoulder, Corinne looks up at the sky.] It’s a beautiful night, isn’t it?
[Fletcher tenses as Corinne wraps her arm around his, but only briefly. It takes him a moment, but he does relax, and finds an unusual comfort from the contact. Having her head on his shoulder, it feels ... normal, and he lets out a soft hum in agreement.] Okay, great, well, it's-- it's not too far from here, and the best view can likely be found in the park over on 4th. It's imperative to have an unobstructed view of the sky for these sorts of celestial events. [Fletcher chews at his lip, nervously wrestling with whether or not he can-- Don't over-think, Fletch, he thinks, remembering Andy's words, Just /do/.] It is, yes, and ... and so are you. Beautiful, I mean. I wanted-- I would have said so at the beginning of the evening, but ... it's a bit overwhelming, this sort of thing. Sometimes.
total eclipse of the heart (mp) // fletcher & corinne
[Dinner with Fletcher had gone better than Corinne had expected—not that she had expected that it would be anything short of amazing. After they had finished their meals and moved on to dessert, Corinne realized that the night was coming to a close and she honestly got a bit sad. She enjoyed Fletch’s company and it would have been a lie if she had said she wasn’t already thinking about their next meeting. Corinne is pleased, however, when Fletch invites her to watch the moon do ‘a thing’. Even though she has no idea what the ‘thing’ is, she’s more than happy to accept his invitation.] Oh. Yeah, no, totally. I can stay. I’d love to watch the moon with you…
That's great. Really great. You're going to be amazed, Corinne, it is mindblowing. [Fletcher smiles down at her, stuffing his hands into his jacket pockets as they walk down the sidewalk.] I had an idea - p-perhaps we could head over to the coffee shop that stays open late, maybe get some hot chocolate? It's just, this - the eclipse - it's due to last for around two hours, give or take, and ... [He sighs, looking a little sheepish.] It might be quite a late night. I hope you don't have an early class tomorrow?
total eclipse of the heart (mp) // fletcher & corinne
[Dinner was, by anyone's standards, a resounding success. All of Fletcher's preceding nerves and reservations had settled by the time they'd looked at the menu and ordered their starters. He'd manged, in the most part, not to stumble over his words, nor to go off on too many space-related tangents. In fact, he'd barely been able to stop grinning, simply beside himself with the fact that Corinne had, genuinely, wanted to have dinner with him. Now, with desert long forgotten, Fletcher concludes that it's as good as time as to enquire as to whether or not Corinne would be agreeable to watching the lunar eclipse with him.] I, ehm, I just wanted to say thank you, again, f-for joining me. [He pulls at the collar of his shirt, his fingers running over his stop button. A quick glance at his watch tells him that the eclipse will be starting shortly.] I know it's ... late, but, do you have time? I mean, do you need to rush home? It's perfectly alright if you do but the moon is doing a thing this evening and I think you might -- maybe you'd like to watch it with me?
sheer coincidence (mp) || fletch and leah
[Leah is slightly surprised as Fletcher rises to shake her hand; she isn’t used to her manners being reciprocated. She decides she likes Fletcher. She had hung out with him before, of course, but out of their group, she had usually focused on Corinne… the boys were all nice, but Andy and Marcus were constantly wrapped around each other, and Corinne kept glancing over at Fletcher, and Leah had quietly chose to spend her time elsewhere. She wondered what it would be like to speak with Fletcher, without Marcus or Andy speaking for him.] So, I assume you’ve heard the blood moon that’s coming up? It sounds really awesome, though I’ll admit, I actually don’t know anything about it. [She laughs.] I usually just admire nature, I’ve never been one to understand the details behind it. But you seem to be quite the expert.
[Fletcher scratches at the back of his neck nervously as he settles back down into his seat. His brow furrows, and he takes a brief moment to study Leah's face. She doesn't seem hostile, or aggressive, he thinks, Still, it's all too convenient that she approached me today, when I have an engagement with her sister arranged for this evening. Hmm. Best be especially polite. Just in case. As soon as she mentions the eclipse, however, Fletcher's characteristic smile forms on his face.] I would hardly say I am an expert; it takes years of study and research to get even near that level. I don't even have half of an undergraduate degree yet. I'd like to be one, though, someday ... [Fletch trails off and takes a couple of breaths, suddenly feeling self-concious.] I'm-- Sorry. My thoughts get the better of me sometimes. Yes, I am really looking forward to it. I'm planning on asking Corinne if she'd like to view it with me, and -- Oh. I, uhm ... bother. [He averts his gaze from Leah, screwing up his face in frustration.] I wasn't meant -- I, oh, I wasn't planning on mentioning that too anyone, in order to keep it a surprise. My excitement got the better of me.

Andy: Hey, when have I ever steered you wrong?
Andy: Asking her was the hardest part, and she said yes! It's all smooth sailing from here, mate.
Fletcher: Exactly never. Not that I make a habit of keeping count.
Fletcher: Thank you, Andy. Your confidence in the situation has settled my anxiety substantially.
sheer coincidence (mp) || fletch and leah
[“Go out of the apartment sometime”, Corinne had asked her. It was rather silly, Leah thought, because she always was outside. She hated being cooped up indoors, and loved fresh air, no matter how terrible the weather was at the time. But nevertheless, Leah had done as her sister asked, deciding to walk around the quad to take her mind off this weekend’s large amount of coursework. But when she saw a slightly-familiar face sitting alone at a table on the quad, Leah decided that it had to be coincidence.] Fletcher, right? [She smiles, hoping she didn’t startle him. He looked pretty deeply engrossed in his book.] Sorry if I’m interrupting you. This is going to sound kind of weird, but I’m Corinne’s sister? And, um, she kind of told me about your kind invitation from earlier, so I thought I would just stop by and say hi. So, hi! I’m Leah. It’s nice to meet you. [She extends a hand, even though she is more than aware that people rarely shook hands anymore. It was a force of habit more than anything else, that she just couldn’t shake. I hope I don’t scare him off. Corinne really wouldn’t like that.]
[Fletcher's focussed on his text book - "Astronomy: A Physical Perspective", chapter 15, star formation - when an unfamiliar voice interrupts him from his reading. He quickly finishes the paragraph before sticking a post-it down to mark his place. When he looks up, Fletch has to squint into the sunlight, narrowing his eyes at the the girl in front of him. Her face is slightly more familiar than her voice.] Oh, hmm, yes. Fletcher Sullivan. Sorry, I'll get up - how rude of me [He forces himself up from the table, not yet able to form a smile as he takes her hand.] Leah. [Fletcher nods, repeating her name, knowing it will help him remember it.] It's, uhm, it's lovely to make your acquaintance. Please, h-have a seat with me.
