I am full of death. Old haunts and burials. A funeral of hearts. A funeral of lovers. A graveyard of expired passions.

Why does the haunt last so long? Why must it cling so wickedly to my bones?

“There are three classes of people: those who see. Those who see when they are shown. Those who do not see.”
— Leonardo da Vinci (via goodreadss)
““You’re not a monster,” I said. But I lied. What I really wanted to say was that a monster is not such a terrible thing to be. From the Latin root monstrum, a divine messenger of catastrophe, then adapted by the Old French to mean an animal of myriad origins: centaur, griffin, satyr. To be a monster is to be a hybrid signal, a lighthouse: both shelter and warning at once.”
— Ocean Vuong, from On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous.
Those Who Fear by apeldille
Forgetfulness || Nostalgia
"They forget, sometimes. What I am."
Idle words, spoken nonchalantly and utterly out of place; A body hit the mossy ground with a dull thump of noise, whilst another scrambled in voiceless terror. Shadows crawled over the ground, restless and hungry, coiling beneath the stricken man. His life thrummed in his being like a hare's before a fox—
A mouse before a crow.
"They do not — don't — mean to, I do not think," The woman continued unabated, the whimpered pleas of a man judged to die falling on deaf horns, no matter the acrid scent of fear in the air. Her footsteps made no sound over the ground as she paced absently towards her quarry. There would be no escape for this one, but conversation was a dance for two, or so the book had said. "Perhaps easier that way? Unsure. 'Creepy', easier than 'monster'?"
It was a question posed for her target, even as hands lifted him easily from the ground by the back of his neck. It was no difficult task, not when the aether of his companion thrummed deliciously in her veins. The saccarine sweetness of a forbidden snack, making off with the proverbial cookie jar. Violets consumed by blue watched as lips parted, yet it was to her disappointment that it was no answer that fell from his lips.
"Please, please, I have gil—"
It was curious to her, how he convinced himself enough pleading would save him. Had he not realized his death was inevitable?
Elyse —And truly, in these moments, it was almost relaxing to slip back to old habits. To let herself be Elyse, instead of trying to remember how to be herself — tilted her head, pursing her lips in a soothing hush as her fingers tightened around the man's throat. Tightened until his words spluttered into gasps, into wheezes, into nothing. Passively watched the colours shift.
Pink, red, blue.
It was not soothing, listening to his heartbeat fade until it simply stopped. Was not exhilarating, or even exciting. It made her feel. . . nothing, nothing at all.
It was nostalgic.
A sigh fell past her mask as the body hit the ground with a familiar impact. It wasn't as if she'd been expecting any great insight on his part, but it would have been nice to have a stranger's insight; the book had said an outside view would help her sort her thoughts, after all. Eyes rolled skyward as Elyse tried to gauge the time by the position of the moon in the sky, a click of noise her only note of displeasure at the answer she found.
It was nearly time to remind her brother to take a break, lest he lost himself to his books yet again.
One footstep, another, before the Au Ra peered back at the scene she was leaving behind. There hadn't been any instruction on the aftermath, and so she reckoned no clean up was required. . . Her gaze flit thoughtfully over the bodies trailed over the now-emptied bandit camp. Six corpses dotted the forest floor, mere husks of what they had been now that their aether had been leeched dry; Her head bobbed decisively before she turned back on her way, mind already turning to more important tasks.
Ah, well.
It wasn't as if the bodies would last long in such a state.
"—Perhaps I will bribe him with tea, this time. . ."
She lifted her eyes. Blank, lovely eyes. Mad eyes. A mad girl.
Beast is a title earned in blood. Beware, for a beast may yet be beautiful.
