Things We've Learned This Morning:
Early Earth Flight had extensive contact with Shadow, Fire, and Ice.
Them knowing about the Veilspun makes maybe a little sense since those territories are right next to each other but for them to be able to produce recognizable statues of a Gaoler at the time means someone was travelling and doing so extensively.
This obviously isn't based on a second or third hand account either whoever made those statues knew for sure what Gaolers and Banescales looked like and thought to record it.
So the ancients did get around and did talk to each other which makes the Banescale extinction even more insane of a concept than it already was. This also vastly improves the chances that Banes will be able to revive their old culture at least partially. If there's anywhere it's written down, I'd check in those ruins first.
Still thinking about this and about the ancients in general because I suppose Iād made some assumptions based off of the first two. Namely that:
There arenāt a lot of ancients. Looking at the Gaolers for this one mostly. The entirety of Gaoler society pre return was contained inside of a single cave system. There were and are not many of them, and probably never were many of them. In the same way, the Banescale disappeared because literally all of them were in the same place together. There were so few of them that a single AOE ice spell took out their whole species. Veilspun are all contained in one region and are kind of the exception to this but theyāre also tiny and were purposefully avoiding attention. Populations of ancients were tiny and/or insular or so Iād thought up until now.
When they did meet up, they were usually enemies Again going off our first two and the fact that the gods have a history of being weirdly antagonistic toward each other. Modern breeds still fight each other all the time in Dominance Wars so saying that the ancients were built primarily to tackle each other isnāt a super far fetched assumption imo. Iād presumed collaboration between different elements and different breeds was a relatively recent development.
And now we get evidence thatās not the case. Someone in Dragonhome had taken it upon themselves to make what we see in that scene. The Ancient Breeds had some kind of community with one another, or at least some of them did. And even if all of Sornieth wasnāt involved, the Gaolers were. The Banescale were. Two other breeds were at least.Ā
Which brings me to my questions:
What caused this society to collapse? It obviously declined and fell apart at some point because now weāre digging up ruins from it. No one seems to remember anything about it and all of the key players are just straight up gone. Something went down there.
What happened after the Banescale were wiped out? Two breeds shown right next to each other in this statue line up go to war and one absolutely obliterates the other. Were there consequences for that? Were the Gaolers ever punished for what they did?
Were these two events one and the same? Did an act of war start the chain of events leading to all of the ancients going into hiding? Or is said collapse what drove the Banes to attack their neighbors...?Ā
Many questions this evening.
Headcanon
Tundras and Gaolers, like horses, have stiff spines. This makes them good weight-bearers, but forces an alteration in their run cycle that puts all the momentum-generation into their legs. Rather than spreading and joining, their legs move much more in tandem, all forward, then all back.
terrible
I am thinking about the end of the new short story mentioning a newly opened portal and how it is bad that this portal is newly opened. I am connecting it to the newest coli venue. I am connecting it.
The portal the Veilspun is referring to is the one Umbrann inadvertently fixed inĀ Kindred Crossing.

ok but waitā¦ā¦.. did we finally get an answer as to what the skull from the cranial hornhelm came from? š¤ i couldnāt help but notice the similarities between its appearance/ tooltip lore and the banescaleās own skull structureā¦ā¦. and personally loving the implications here
perhaps the early coatls of the ashfall waste, long after the banescaleās own extinction, found their remains and wrote stories & songs about them. (think like the ancient greeks finding giant, prehistoric bear fossils and adorning them with a warriorās grave and offerings)
iāve decided this is how veilspuns fly. i will not be taking questions

Tomo knows that this world she lives in is a game.
The Harpy and Talonok beastclans that encircle the Pillar of the World are the ones with the friendliest relationships to dragonkind. Several of them invaded as part of military campaigns, but found themselves oddly at peace by the energies that radiated there. Maybe have personal relationships with the Earthshaker himself, and keep him company when he is otherwise in complete solitude when contemplating atop the Pillar.
Earth dragons are well known for their ability to create great tears and fissures in the ground, but once an Earth mage is skilled enough, they can literally dive straight into the earth and swim within it effortlessly. Earth mages can also choose to specialize in manipulating certain types of soil or mineral, which makes them extremely valuable in locating natural deposits and fresh water sources, determining the best place to plant crops, or finding the most resonant gemstones and metals to store magical charges, which are subsequently crafted into tools or armor.
Yet no matter how much the land of Dragonhome is altered, with time, it will always mend back to its original shape, sculpted to to the exact moment when the Pillar shattered. Some say the land itself is in mourning, permanently scarred by the elemental divide that prevents dragonkind from finding unity, and will not allow itself to be changed until the Pillar is reformed or the elemental warring of the Fourth Age comes to an end.
You ever think about how itās cannon that coatls can fluff their chests up to utterly ridiculous levels? Imagining a coatl going from normal to frog haunts me.
Absolutely.
And they go beyond frog levels.
~Just coatl things~
A common gift among miner coatls are gems/rocks that match one of the reciever of the gift's genes! Some will even carve them into the desired gene for an extra special gift.
When traversing new caves in the mines coatls will sometimed get stuck in small entrances. When all else has failed to free them, they get the Bucket of Shame TM and the coatl just hacks up their last meal like a snake to help them get through.
Coatls are very flexible, and sleep in positions as varied as cats do.
Coatls born with naturally white/grey feathers can get their feathers dyed if they want.
Speaking of, the stigma against coatls with bland feathers has lessened over the ages, but customization has still remained due to popular demand.
Coatls bathe like birds do, just with lava instead.
While they do have normal vision, coatls can use a type of natural magic to see in heatvision.
Baby coatls' feathers are collected until they shed their last baby feather, it is tradition to burn the baby feathers as a way of showing how to coatl has grown in the flame.
Coatls with crystal/facet have to wear specialized gear when collecting ore due to certain incidents.
Coatls love to compare their feathers with other breeds'!
When running a business, coatls will often hire an assistant to stop them from accidentaly gifting away too much merchandise.
Coatls can go a while without eating, but when they do eat, they eat A LOT.
Coatl hatchlings have come up with a fun and commonly banned game called Dodge Rock since coatls thick skin protects them from stone. (This does not include the eyes, hence why its banned)
This is a great time to remind people⦠Canonically⦠Fae donāt smileā¦
so weāre just gonna ignore the human teeth huh
Well of course it has human teeth. Fae do not smile, so why would it have teeth like a dragon⦠Whatever it is⦠It is not a fae
No dragons were harmed during this experiment.
I thought of a lore explanation why ancient breeds canāt wear apparel
Apparel that is interchangeable between dragons of different species is magically imbued to allow it to fit the figure of its wearer. This explains why fae and imperials can swap clothing with no size issues or why, say, snappers and spirals can wear the same sweater with about the same ratio of neck to collar. It also explains why battle item drops like beastclan armor and weapons arenāt equippable.
But ancient breeds have a magical signature so old and far removed from modern dragon breeds that modern magic wonāt work with them. Kind of like incompatible blood types. And with skincents, making clothing that does fit them would involve special tailoring without magical implements.
So tailors who are used to manipulating magic to solve individual fashion needs are now thrown for a loop and are forced to resort to analog methods like measuring tapes and needle and thread like some sort of stone age, non-magical dumbasses. Like having to use a god damned abacus because your calculator broke. All because a woolly mammoth showed up at your door and commissioned a three piece suit
This would also mean that tailors and fashion designers are some of the most disciplined, elaborate and intricate magic practitioners on the planet
Sornieth and Colors
I'm back on this train, but this time I'm thinking about the significance of color symbolism in Sorniath Societies.
Since dragon eyes and eye color are so set in stone I'm sure the different colors of the flights are as well. As such the way one dresses probably holds significance. Scale colors may be consider auspicious or unlucky by how well they allign (or don't) with the colors of ones god and homeland.
And the significance of color makes it very very interesting that light flight has chosen to adopt the color black on top of their given soft gold palette.
Black also appears from time to time in shadow flight's apparel, but whether it's truly black or a very deep violet is something that could be argued. The other nine flights avoid the color entirely despite it's being otherwise neutral, which is understandable. Black makes a significant appearance in the (presumably in universe) depictions of the shade as a large black cloud with many heads. It serves to reason that the two would be connected in dragons' very color oriented minds.
So why would light flight want to use black in such a prominent role on it's official regalia. It inherently ties them to shadow, who notably keeps white far far away from anything of theirs, and to the shade, which they, of all the flights, would probably want to distance themselves from the most considering their emperor problems. What's being implied here? Is this intentional or is staff just taking advantage of how bangin' black and gold look together?
Probably the latter.
But one can hope that this might go somewhere because the implications of light canonically having the dirty history and magical entanglement with the shade that many headcanon them to have would be, in short,
Lovely
Think about this too: light is all about the search for the truth. Things which do not want to be found out/learned as true hide out in the darkest possible places. And sometimes....sometimes....it is better to let the truth hide there. It can both symbolize their journeys into darkness to find the truth and the darkness they realize are best left unlit.
you know those cool little party avatars in the coli? the long skinny ones?
guess who figured out how to ripĀ āem o/ it even works on dragons who are unnamed and therefore un-coli-able
i have now learned how to auto generate them
the lair database from hell has become 500% more hellish
t-teach me your ways this would save me so much time in photoshop
You could use this:
http://flightrising.com/rendern/coliseum/portraits/ID FROM GENERATE CODE/ID FROM GENERATE CODE.png
Just exchange the ID FROM GENERATE CODE using your dragonās ID. It also works with the sprites from coli, just copy the link from above and exchangeĀ āportraitsā toĀ ābattlespritesā.
Example for portrait | Example for battlesprite
Thank you for the addition! Just take note that you have to do a little more than simply add your dragonās ID. The final url looks like this:
http://flightrising.com/rendern/coliseum/portraits/286232/28623142.png
Where the last number is the ID, but the first you have to calculate. You can get by removing the last two digits and then adding 1.
Tada! The Excel formula looks something like this:
=IMAGE(concatenate(āhttp://flightrising.com/rendern/coliseum/portraits/ā,CEILING((D2+1)/100),ā/ā,D2,ā.pngā))Ā
Where D2 whatever cell is storing the ID number. You can also use something similar to generate [img] tags for use in bios or forum posts!
=concatenate(ā[img]http://flightrising.com/rendern/coliseum/portraits/ā,CEILING((D2+1)/100),ā/ā,D2,ā.png[/img]ā)
Iād like to thank this post for making my own spreadsheet 10 times as hella
