[It had been about... give or take, 5 hours since Hexnut had left the house. It was around noon when they had left, and now it was about dusk. The sun was starting to set, and Hex had walked through those doors tired and angry.]
[Her eyes were a tad bit red and puffy, and there were definitely bags under his eyes- they were definitely hoping that maybe the two bots they had left home had been maybe tucked in for sleep mode already.]
[They didnt... particularly want to talk about their day out. They also didnt want anyone to scold them about going to their liquor cabinet that they rarely use. They needed something to take the edge off- She knew Mepad would give him an earfull, but then also they may need to sit and explain what booze was to a fucking alien.... their headache wasnt gonna give them the patience for that.]
Flipsy was in fact, not asleep. In fact, it had been sort of just standing there in the dark. It made a small ping as Hexnut entered.
"HELLO! I HAVE PROTECTED THE RESIDENCE AS REQUESTED," it cheerfully declared, not seeming to pick up on Hexnut's mood, though it did seem rather happy to see Hexnut, its cord-tail waving. "MEPAD IS RESTING CURRENTLY. WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO INFORM THEM YOU HAVE ARRIVED HOME?"
"Itss... not technically a lie."
[They murmered quietly. Hex was feeling just a bit more languid as they felt the liquor they consumed warm their gut and ease up a bit of their own tension. Again, not enough to make them incapable of anything- just enough to take a grinder to that sharp edge in the back of their mind]
"Cuz like... I did help ya, yeah?.. I uh... did some make shift dental work on you to help out some of your bent uh.. chompers there."
[Another sigh.]
"I-I dont know, do what y' like and all..."
[They brought a hand to rub at their eyes under their lenses, the frames askew on their face]
"Maybe dont take advice from a crook like me... You'd- heh- You'd definitely be better off."
[Their line of thinking was definitely slowed a bit, preventing the floodworks from opening about their terrible evening. Maybe it'll just slip their mind anyway...]
"Is it just yer uh .. your space dad bugging ya or something then?"
"THAT IS TRUE," Flipsy replied. "...BUT... MY CREATOR KEEPS STRESSING THE IMPORTANCE OF DOING THIS AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. AND NOW I AM TAKING DELIBERATE DETOURS THAT WILL SLOW ME DOWN. I AM NOT... WORKING AS INTENDED."
[Their joking smile quickly turned to a frown, their eyelids falling just a little. The mechanic quietly looked down into their glass, swirling it every few moments to watch the ice slide around. No drink was left, but... it was something to look at all the same.]
"....I dont know if i have good advice for you, kid."
[She sighed, eyes closing between those square lenses of their's.]
"I dont know your creator. I also dont know how theyd retaliate. I just.... down here, individuality is important. Who really gives a shit if you were "intended" for something else..?"
[They stared at the ceiling now, back pressed against those worn cushions.]
".... Im gonna lend you in on a little fact here."
[He pressed a finger against the side of their head.]
".... I "intended" to WORK for Samsing. I was working on getting my degree and everything. I was... the TOP of my class."
[A bitter taste lingered on her tongue.]
".... Till I figured out how fuckin' corrupt everything about the whole market is... I thought maybe I could just change paths for another company but... Hahahh.."
"Its bullshit all the way down..."
[A pause]
"I guess im just trying to say that uh... nothing is set in stone. No one is "intended" to do anything.."
The advice seemed to soothe it somewhat, fortunately. There was a lot of pressure put on it, but all of the conflicting data made it want to do its job less and less, at least until it figured out what the right thing was to do.
"I LIKE IT HERE. IT IS STRANGE. BUT GOOD."

[The light turning on and beaming at him had definitely caused her to wince, eyes dilating. It was a similar experience to rolling over in bed and checking your phone, not realizing its full brightness]
"Uu...Uh..?"
[It took a second for her to understand the question, before shaking his head to clear up their head.]
"No.... No uh-. Just let them rest... Ill talk to him in the morning.."
[Despite everything, despite the disgusting feeling in her chest, despite their typical urge of self isolating into their work until they stopped thinking about it- well... It did help them feel better to come home to some company.]
"You did.... A good job taking care of everything" he nodded at them
Even with Flipsy still being awake, Hex had made up their mind about having a drink tonight. So they had made their way over to their kitchen nook, getting onto a stool so that he could reach the highest shelf- and taking down an unopened bottle of a nice caramel colored, barrel aged whiskey.
"I uh..- I had a long day. Uhm."
[They struggled and pondered for a minute, lip tightening- it was a bit hard to parse what to say, so she said something stupid again.]
"...Did you want an..- Can. You consume things..?"
It brightened slightly at the praise— both literally and figuratively— looking quite pleased with itself for fulfilling its quest. As it realized it was hurting Hexnut's eyes though, it dimmed its brightness. It took note of her demeanor, realizing something was up from the way he spoke— and its suspicions were confirmed by their admission of the stressful day.
It tilted its head— or at least did an approximation, face tilting slightly on the screen— at the question. It thought for a moment. "I DO NOT BELIEVE I CAN CONSUME ANYTHING UNLESS IT IS A POWER SOURCE," it replied after a moment, trying to think of a way to help. "DO YOU... WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT?" It asked uncertainly.
She huffed a small chuckle, eyes narrowing as they returned to looking at the drink he was pouring. They had pulled out a glass and filled it with ice, pouring the bottle about... half way up the glass, just enough to cover the tops of the ice. Not overdoing it, just... enough to take an edge off.
"I... kind of figured as much...." he sighed, swirling the glass and just listening to the cubes clinking against the sides of the cup.
Once sufficiently cooled enough, they took a sip- walking themself quietly to that stained couch in-.... ah... nevermind. They noticed that when he was gone, someone must have gotten that stain out. Probably Mepad... they'll have to thank him in the morning. Regardless, they went and sat down, letting the taste mingle on their tongue
"Not... particularly. Its uh- Tsss... ahh its... all fuckin' stupid, anyway..."
It looked a bit doubtful, but took the answer anyway, sitting down next to Hexnut on the couch and folding slightly.
A small buzz— a notification— made it stiffen slightly, however, and it gripped the sofa with its claws. Right; its creator probably wanted an update on its progress.
Which was none. None at all. It still needed to locate the head of Samsing, which was proving to be a much more difficult task than it expected. Perhaps if it checked the headquarters— but the security there was quite high. Even if it had the ability to detect the fuel the droids ran off of, there were cameras everywhere.
It wondered what would happen if it failed.
...it gripped the sofa tighter.
[Just as Hexnut had begun to ease itself down for the night, shutting their eyes quietly and enjoying the taste of their drink- They felt the cushions underneath buzz in tandem with the notification that shuddered through the other device.]
[No rest for the wicked, he supposed.]
"What's going on? Why are YOU tense all'a a sudden..?"
[They looked at the other quietly- before she gave a low sigh; And opted to tilt the cup back to their lips. They downed it quicker than they were originally planning, wincing at the slight tingle at the back of their throat and setting down the glass. With a breath, they wiped their lip]
"Alright, then. Tell me what's going on with ya.."
It looked away anxiously, folding back up slightly as it let go. It hadn't realized it had tensed until Hexnut said something. It didn't know why it had reacted like that. It closed its clawed hands, looking back up. "IT IS JUST MY CREATOR. THEY WILL NOT BE HAPPY WITH MY PROGRESS STALLING," It replied. "IT IS NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT THOUGH!"
Even despite its appearance of nonchalance, the initial reaction definitely had been... bad enough that the flip in behavior was strange, and it still seemed slightly on edge in a way that Hexnut hadn't seen before.
[Oh...]
[....]
[Hex... sometimes forgets what Flipsy's original purpose was. In worries him; if its main role was to... cause carnage at samsing. Well shes.... incredibly greatful that it didnt do anything while his friend was down there.]
"Hmm..."
[It really made Hex uncomfortable when they thought about it. For all Hexnut cared, the less she knows the better. Don't incriminate yourself too...]
"You could tell them you.... found a nice organic being. Not involved with the company. Who helped patch you up anddd..."
[Pointed to her own teeth]
"Anddd... made your teeth all sharp..? To.... kill.... things."
"BUT YOU ASKED ME NOT TO RESOLVE THINGS VIOLENTLY?" It asked, sounding confused. "I DID TRY PITCHING THE IDEA, BUT THEY DID NOT SEEM... VERY PLEASED WITH IT." It admitted.
For whatever it was worth, despite its origins, it seemed to take its promises very, very seriously. It hadn't broken a promise to him yet.
"I STILL HAVE YET TO LOCATE THE PERSON I NEED TO FIND, EITHER WAY. IT SEEMS HE IS VERY ELUSIVE..."
"I did!"
[Hex made a motion with his hands, similar to jazz hands for extra effect]
"Its called lying. Gets them off your tail for a bit while you figure out what else to do."
[Hexnut then sunk into the cushions a bit more, putting their hands behind their head as they tried to get comfortable- kicking their feet up on the table.]
"....I've had to stall for time too many times to count. You'll get used to it... My gift to you." They joked
Lie to its creator? They... they guessed they weren't here to make sure that they were telling the truth, but...
...it wasn't sure.
"I WILL CONSIDER IT," It said quietly, despite being uncomfortable about the idea of lying to its creator. Something in its head screamed it was a bad idea, but it did need more time— maybe if it had more time, it would be okay. "I HAVE NOT LIED TO THEM BEFORE."
[It had been about... give or take, 5 hours since Hexnut had left the house. It was around noon when they had left, and now it was about dusk. The sun was starting to set, and Hex had walked through those doors tired and angry.]

"DO YOU... WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT?" It asked uncertainly.

this thing will be returning shortly
There was a faint shuffling of feet towards the front door of Hexnut's home, the mechanic in question trying to slide a jacket over their body to protect themself from the slight chill outside. It was... rather peculiar for this little bolt to actually leave. They were a bit... reclusive, and perhaps a bit of a shut in.
So whatever they were leaving for must be important.
Before they left however, it quickly crossed their mind that his home was not empty any more, and her guests may ask for his whereabouts....
"Flipsy! Paddy! Im leaving for a bit- doing a favor for Pink. I should only be gone for a few hours- hold down the fort! Any interlopers come by, tell them im off to Peru!"
Flipsy was surprised by the sudden departure. "YOU'RE LEAVING?" It asked, sounding confused and almost slightly distressed, though it seemed to get over this fairly fast. "O... OKAY! I WILL PROTECT THE AREA WHILE YOU ARE AWAY."
It was not very familiar with Mepad, though, and was slightly nervous about that. It would have to become more familiar with Mepad, but it didn't really know how to without scaring Mepad... maybe it'd be okay.
Hex had evidently let out a bit of a sigh, seeing the slightly worried and saddened face on the extraterrestrial device.
"It'll only be a few hours..- look, something just came up is all, and I'm doing a favor for one of my best fr-.... best clients."
[The other device that took residence in the building had stepped out from the side with a quiet nod.]
"Of course. Travel safe then, Hexnut."
As the door closed, its attention turned to Mepad, and its mind cycled through methods of socializing. It didn't want to be a threat— it needed to build some sort of rapport with the device.
What was it that people did to communicate they were not a threat? It had seen very few interactions between people, but...
Right. Hexnut said 'Flipsy' sounded more personable, didn't he? It could do this. It approached Mepad as normally as it could, and tried to put on its best idea of a friendly voice.
"I DID NOT INTRODUCE MYSELF PREVIOUSLY! MY NAME IS FLIPSY! YOU ARE MEPAD?"
[The much taller device had gave the other a slow, curt nod. He clearly was moving quite calculative, a bit moreso than a smaller device. Perhaps due to the fact he had been much bigger. Don't want such a fragile thing tipping over or anything!]
"I am, yes. It is a pleasure to meet you, Flipsy. I appologize that I haven't been... able to be very active myself recently. Are you planning on staying long term with us, then?"
"YES! I AM NOT FROM HERE BUT HEXNUT HAS BEEN VERY NICE! I LIKE HEXNUT. THEY ARE DIFFERENT FROM THE PEOPLE I'VE MET BEFORE."
It wasn't a lie— even if it only knew its creator, they were very different from Hexnut. Hexnut was readable to it.
Hexnut wasn't scary.
"DO YOU COME FROM SOMEWHERE ELSE TOO?" It asked.
[He lingered on that question for a little bit. It was such a simple question, and yet it was such a complicated thing to respond to... Reminiscing on it hurt a little bit, and a slightly saddened expression was shown in the tablet's eyes.]
"Yes... I suppose that I did."
[It wasnt required to disclose all the details right now, so its probably better to leave it at that. Thinking about what occurred on that island was... not something he would like to be doing right now.]
It managed to just barely pick up on the upset expression— it was foggily familiar, the only reason it recognized it— but it looked a little confused still.
"YOU DID NOT LIKE YOUR HOME," It said— less of an inquiry, more of a realization. It hadn't realized that was an option. Looking down, it thought hard about what to say. It could lie, say it related— but some little part of it whispered that it wasn't a lie at all. And if its creator learned about that little voice, however small of a defect—
It blinked away the thought, though not quite quickly enough for it to be dismissed as a figment of the imagination. "I LIKE BEING HERE, EVEN IF IT'S WEIRD THAT THE STARS ARE DIMMER." it said as cheerfully as it could, attempting to change the topic.
The much larger device was a bit hesitant to speak further. But despite his level headed composure, it didn't mean he doesn't think about it or anything. "Well..."
Mepad tried to think of a way to phrase this, without going into too much detail. It was definitely a very complicated thing to unpack of course... And that would be a lot to someone he had just formally met.
"It is a very complicated subject for me. Yes and no." Deciding to turn the topic a bit away from himself, so he didn't need to linger on the thought too long.
"What about yourself? Where are you from, may I ask?"
"...VERY FAR AWAY. I WASN'T THERE VERY LONG." It replied a bit quietly. It had gotten reprimanded for telling Hexnut too much, so it chose to remain vague. "I BROKE ON THE WAY HERE, BUT HEXNUT REPAIRED ME. I PROBABLY WOULD HAVE BEEN DISCARDED BY MY CREATOR IF NOT FOR THEM."
It admittedly still needed to find the person responsible for what was happening on its home planet, but Hexnut was the only reason it hadn't been deemed a failure and replaced. Its creator certainly had seemed to be considering it when it first crashed on earth.
The response saddened him, but he understood. He too understood the burdens of being... discarded. Mepad did not know many details about the Samsing's ceo. He had hoped he wouldn't of been as dastardly as his own creator, but.... That alone seemed to douse his hopes on that.
"I am... sorry to hear that, Flipsy. But I am glad that you were found by someone who was able to assist you. I was... In a very similar predicament."
Another pause, trying to think on exactly how to put this.
"I do not... Like to think about what had happened to me very much, but I will share that I too had been damaged much similarly to yourself. I.. Did not realize damages of my own could even be repaired, let alone in the way that have been."
He closes his eyes in reflection.
"Hexnut had saved my life- Brought me back to it- And I will be forever grateful for that."
It agreed, but for some reason a bad feeling curdled in its chest. It hadn't killed Hexnut, but the thought that it almost had... upset it. Hexnut had helped both it and Mepad— and probably many other people. If It had done that, it...
The thought distressed it deeply in a way it was not fully equipped to understand.
It would need to look into it more later.
"I WILL INFORM YOU WHEN HEXNUT HAS RETURNED," it said, before wandering off.
