Thomas inclined his head, glad he had left the bulk of his regalia at home. It was strange enough to be wandering around this - metallic and glass city surrounded by people in strange dress even for a man of his varied experience with cultures. If he had come in crown and cape then he would have stood out ridiculously, his military jacket and medals sufficing for now.

“Thank you, Mr Valiant,” he stepped through the doorway and approached one of the slightly bedraggled chairs. “I am glad you have time for me. I have come from Corona to seek your assistance in a matter of some importance to our country.”

It was impossible to be comfortable here without Primrose (Rose) at his side. He had given up adventuring so many years ago, had not been out searching for informants, clues and information in so long that he itched for his wife and his disguises and for the safety of a name like Simple Tom to hide behind.

Gothel took one feeble step back, a chill going down her spine. She had raised this Prim when she was a girl, and then stolen her child when she was a woman. She had about a million questions and was sure Prim had a million and one, but Gothel didn’t see this going well for her in any way shape or form.

“I…I don’t understand, what are you doing here? You should be in your castle! Not in this…hovel.” She heard to tone of Prim’s voice and felt herself weaken a little. What was she supposed to say? ‘Sorry I stole your child, but your husband ruined my life?’ That would go over well. She should just leave. Run and never speak to Prim again, let her think it was all some fantastic dream of sorts.

“What…do you want to say?”

Rose - Primrose - Rothaid. They spun in perfect choreographed confusion through her mind - Rose automatically grimacing at the mention of castle spoken far too loud for her liking and Rothaid wanting to cling to the woman who had been more instrumental in her childhood than her own - lovely but distant mother. Sometimes she suspected that her mother had distanced herself after her father had chosen her as his successor.

“Hush - please,” she glanced cautiously around the bar and saw that so far her cover was not - quite - blown. Rose the Thief, perhaps, was looking a little shaky - but Primrose the QUeen was not completely unmasked. They were still drawing more attention than she wanted to. “Can we talk outside? I need your help. I - my daughter - please, can we talk outside?”

“No, min elskede. Not before dinner. We can’t have our little monsters getting big and strong, can we?”

“Prim - that’s Danish... say some more -”

Primrose of Corona sidestepped elegantly as her husband advanced on her - the vibrant green snake still hissing distractedly from his left arm. She smoothed her dark skirts and smiled at him calmly - nodding to the few servants they had retained to take the children on to supper. “Later, Thomas. There’s someone at the door.”

“Ah!” her beloved husband spun energetically, depositing the snake into one of his many many carniverous and poisonous plants that twined their way through the house. “Fresh meat! How lovely. I’ll go let them in, eh, Prim?”

“Thank you, darling.” She was busy secreting various bladed instruments into the folds of her dress, but she had time to send her beloved a quick, sharp smile - like the edges of a knife. Visitors to the wrecked, ancient Coronan castle were so rare. It would be lovely for the children to be able to play with the guests after dinner.

(OOC - this is a bit tricky as Elsa is Queen but in the DRP canon Punz and Eugene haven’t been discovered by the Royals yet! So I’ll have to give you two answers, one for movie canon and one for this canon)

1. MOVIE CANON.

Primrose raised a brow. “What on earth gave you the idea we didn’t attend the coronation, pray tell? Why would I send my only daughter, my only - just recently returned daughter on a long journey to my home country to the coronation of my cousin and not attend myself?”

“We were there,” Thomas added, placing a hand on Primrose’s shoulder to calm her down.

2. THIS CANON

“This is a little embarrassing,” Primrose said, twisting her fingers together. “It’s just that - well. We were invited of course as an allied kingdom - but -”

“She was very ill at the time,” Thomas interjected. “She was ill and I didn’t want to leave her. We sent emissaries in our place...”

“Even if I had been well, to return to my homeland after all the tragedies - to see two girls I loved so dearly but hadn’t seen for so long and to know they didn’t know who I was, that was terrifying for me. I think I got sick partially because of how anxious I was.”

Thomas nodded and hugged his wife tightly before turning to the questioner with a raised brow. “Who is Rapunzel and Eugene?”

It was unexpected, really. It happened so fast and they should have been ready for it. Primrose thought that very clearly. She had time. It was all - so slow around her. Perhaps it was the goddess blessing her for one final feat.

Only moments before they had been so happy. Their daughter, their beautiful, precious, amazing daughter had been found by their spies and spotted getting into a boat to cross the lake during the release of the lanterns. Primrose had gestured two of their courtiers to take over - automatically - she had been barely thinking straight (and that was why they were in trouble now, wasn’t it Rothaid?) as they gathered a light disguise and a handful of supplies before taking the fastest horses to the other side of the lake.

They weren’t to know a few important meetings had not happened in their life story and one important meeting was happening a fraction too early. They weren’t to know how it would pan out, but they should have been prepared.

Their daughter - (Rapunzel, she called herself) - beautiful, graceful, glowing and radiant with a young man Primrose found familiar except for his nose - had been near the lake when they got there and perhaps it had been the magic of the evening but she believed them somehow - it was a jumble and there was crying and embraces and love.

Primrose felt it in her bones, not her heart, when Thomas fell to the red-headed assassin’s knife. He died almost instantly, his eyes open and surprised as though he hadn’t understood why he was being asked to leave his wife and daughter so soon. There were two of the men, two tall, strong - bulky men. Two she might be able to take with the aid of her daughter’s young man but he was already out of action and Rose - Primrose - Rothaid - mother knew that it would not do to be killed or taken hostage or to only take down one of these giants for as surely as she was still breathing they wanted her little girl.

Time slowed a little then, became liquid and flowed around her - giving her the volva’s power of slipping a little faster than most from moments to moment. The first of the men was simple enough. She had rage and grief on her side. She killed and killed well - in a way that would have pleased her father. His other - twin? - took her blind side and got a strike in - deeper than she would have liked. Rose slid around him, pulled away and hit back. They struggled and she knew she would die as well this night but she was not going to let this man live on in the same space as her daughter.

He got her again the same time that she took her hidden blade and rammed it into his throat. She pushed herself to Thomas, took his hand and squeezed. There was time for a last prayer, perhaps, a breath of blessing for her lost princess. Primrose (mother) refused to say goodbye so soon after she said hello. Instead she just smiled and said I love you.

Spill it; why didn't you guys try for another child after Rapunzel was stolen?

Primrose sighed and placed a hand to her forehead. She despised this question. They had been asked it a number of times by well-meaning relatives and guests and dignitaries and it never ceased to hurt.

“Thanks to the poison from those bastard Westergards,” Thomas said frostily, his normally even tone and polite manner coloured by the truth potion. “My wife is unable to carry more children. We have considered adopting but -”

“But the country is in love with the lost princess,” Primrose continued heavily. “It seemed unkind to bring an orphan into a home where they would always be compared to a child who is practically a saint in this kingdom.”

There were shards of glass on the floor - Primrose dropped a goblet when the man ran into their rooms. Even the guards stepped out of his way - sensing a moment that was beyond their training.

The shattering sound seemed to go on into a hollow silence. She found herself staring at the man instead of what he carried - a familiar face, a rogue’s face with no rogue’s smile though it seemed there should be one there. He was a good-looking man, but he had blood on his shirt. Dried blood. Not from the - not from anyone else. She still couldn’t look at the - she couldn’t look.

Thomas made a sound - the first sound apart from the man’s breathing and the clatter of a guard’s halberd. It was a worse sound than the shattering (she could still hear it, would always hear it, would never be in this room without hearing it) and for the first time in her life, Primrose covered her eyes with her hands and refused to see what was in front of her.

The man said something - a mumble beyond that shatter that she couldn’t even hear and did not want to. She found she couldn’t breathe. Surely no one could breathe. There wasn’t any air. She knew this. Her lungs were working - she was gasping but there was no air.

Someone touched her elbow - Thomas - and she was told to sit with just a gesture. She pulled away so hard that she dropped her hands - she was pushing away Don’t touch me.

Primrose saw. A tousled head of cropped brown hair - a face - just enough of a face to see oh god oh god to see - A bit of pink - a dress - small (too small? it had been so long, it had been so so long - this wasn’t her baby anymore) in the man’s arms. He hadn’t let her go yet and suddenly Primrose hated him for that. It was her baby, her baby and he was holding her baby and keeping her baby near his chest instead of giving her back.

Thomas touched her again, and she howled. Her daughter was home.

Okay uh - this is a bit hard as a question because Prim and Thomas - well they don’t have voices, guys. I mean Primrose does in Tangled Ever After (Kari Wahlgren) but that’s only in Maximus’s imagination so I don’t really count it as her canon voice. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with Kari or anything I just found the voice a bit too plummy for Prim.

So in lieu of who they were played by in their film here are two actors I think could represent them beautifully. Myrna Loy and William Powell as Nick and Nora Charles:

(OOC: Set in Summer Camp AU of the Lost Duckling, teen Thomas, teen human Shere-Khan.)

The last few days of the camp were coming and Thomas had not expected to be sad to see the end of his protracted trip away from home. The days were long and dizzy with late summer warmth, the air thick with sunshine and lazy dragonflies enjoying the halcyon days while they could. Camp activities had slowed to a gentle hum, boys lazing about the cabins and meandering around the lake, sailing wooden boats and having impromptu wrestling matches that ended with both participants giving up and laying on their backs to watch the clouds scud by. Winners of various prizes had been assigned, last demerits taken and the whole camp was full of feelings of repletion, drifting towards a final and very satisfying end.

Thomas felt no satisfaction about the encroaching return home to palace and family. He was all too aware of the barriers that would spring up to keep himself and his newfound friend apart, from royal duties to expectations to simple things like geographical and time restraints. The closer they came to the time when he would eventually have to leave, the more agitated he felt. It was a torn feeling that he was not at all used to, a bone-deep sort of ache that set his teeth on edge and made him restless and unhappy. Thomas attempted to cover his mounting unease, spending more time fencing and sparring with his guards, taking long runs and swimming in the lake until the cold water had cooled his nerves. He had hoped that he had done enough to keep his stress from spreading to Shere Khan, but one day he found his normally crowded cabin empty except for his admittedly less than well-liked friend, who looked to be waiting his return.

Thomas opened his mouth - not sure of what he was going to say to remain cool and casual and perfectly happy why would I be unhappy it’s great to be here with you isn’t it? Why yes it is there’s nothing to be sad about at all - but before he could say anything, Shere-Khan had invaded his space so close that his breath was all gone and all he could think to do was to press his lips to the other boy’s in a brief, messy and all-too-shy first kiss.
