Kink Prompts
Noticed a lack of more sensually explicit Clemi writings in our fandom. Here are some prompts I thought of that may get the creative juices flowing for some fanfictions or fanart ♥ If you do like any of these prompts and write something, please let me know or tag this blog. If their are suggestions for kink prompts, message me and they will be added.
#1 Sensory and Magic sharing: Clef gave Umi her magic which can be shifted to a more intimate ritual bond. Elemental magic compatibility resulting in sensitivity. * #2 Edging and Euphoric pleasure denial: Umi and Clef are both strong willed individuals with levels of complicated feelings. Pride is strong. See, them having a battle of wills in the bed chamber. A certain rivalry as they challenge the other.
#3 Forbidden Trysts: Clef's mantle of being a Master Mage has laws tied to it. The fetish of breaking those taboos despite Princess Emeraude's tragedy would be too tempting to ignore especially never knowing when their time together would turn into a permanent seperation. *#4 Public Spaces: Being together in a public space may happen given the castle is the focal point where many of the characters frequent. Clef is needed by Cephiro often so carpe diem when Umi and him have a chance together. * #5 Stress relief: As the prompt suggests, Umi might want to help Clef not be as cranky and pent up from the burdens of his post. * #6 Accidental Aphrodisiac: This one I think would be fun! Clef is well versed in potions but due to circumstances, may mix the incorrect ingredients in and one or both of them will be subjected to the effects for 48 hours (or however long the writer wants it to be) The struggle to help each other with the 'heat'. While dancing on the edge of friendship and acting on their true feelings. Trying to alleviate the physical and mental pain of not being intimate. Finding ways to be without going all the way. Eventually they will though but perhaps when the potion wears off and their minds are more clear as themselves~
#7 Temperature Play: Clef's magic is tied to Lightning and Umi's is water and ice. The pleasurable reactions of these elements. Ice play, clef experimenting on his main element to a safe voltage. Other elements at his disposal as well.
#8 Voyeurism due to their magical link: What would happen if after Clef telepathically helped Umi learn her magic, the link remained and they could see and feel what the other thought or did with touching themselves? We do know that even though Clef wasn't present during the final battle with Princess Emeraude, he still saw the conflict and the 'tear stained faces of the magic knights'.
#9 Levitating intimacies: Kink prompt is self explanatory lol * #10 Staff Play: Umi is curious about Clef's staff and tries to convince him to let her hold it. Requires trust and might be an extension of himself. Having reactions to her magic etc. * #11 Hair play: Soothing comfort with running their fingers through each others hair. Pampering and taking turns with grooming each other. Domestic sensuality or Umi takes care of him the numerous times he exhausts himself. * #12 Praise Kink: Tied to their early Mentor and pupil dynamic. Umi wanting acknowledgment and praise. Possibly jealous and insecure over his many other student's he has taught.
#13 Mana Conduit: An intimate act where Clef must anchor and heal Umi, helping to recharge her depleted magical reserves. Making them both subjected to sensitivity of touch
#14 Training Session: They might have had an argument similar to their initial meeting. Tensions running high. Clef trying to teach and show her skills during the sparring session. Umi feeling like he finds her weak or lacking. Clef being pushed to use physical techniques. Something he hasn't done in ages. Angry, sexual times commence in the heat of their tempers. * #15 Size Subversion: Exploring their physical contrast. Umi uses her taller stature to dominate or playfully tease a flustered Clef. * #16 Stranded Together: They are locked away in a part of the castle that neutralizes magic. Forcing them to talk and be the people behind the title of Master Mage and Magic Knight.
#17 Blindfolded, isolated senses: Clef allows himself to break his strict, professional boundary. Letting the veil fall just once. Only stipulation is being blindfolded and in complete darkness where they are equals and human.
#18 Magical Crest marking: Clef puts a magical crest on Umi's body to keep her safe and make sure she isn't kidnapped. Causes interesting effects and causes a newfound sense of possessiveness over the Water Knight.
#19 Hypnosis/Mind control: Umi requests Clef perform a compliance/hypnosis spell to help strip away her stubborn, overthinking nature. Leaving her helpless to his voice and the effects. Information being revealed.
#20 Magical Bondage: Using glowing, liquid water tendril and cuffs to pin Umi down during an intense magical confrontation that turns physical, testing her aggressive need for control. Suppose the roles could be reversed for Clef as well.
#21 Consensual Somnophilia: Self explanatory kink. Exhausted from battle, Umi begs Clef to put her into a deep magical sleep, consent to him using, dressing her or pleasuring her body in that state. * #22 The High Mage's Office: Umi interrupts Clef when he is trying to get work done. Resulting in desk bound exhibitionism or strict discipline.
#23 Shared Bathing: Connected to Umi's water affinity, Clef and Umi bathe together. Both using the element and water currents to stimulate the other.
#24 Corruption/Dark Magic: Similar to Hikaru giving birth to her darkness in the form of Nova...both Umi and Clef have their shadows formed to aim to corrupt and take what Umi/Clef denied themselves due to fear and laws.
More Official anime art!
This picture takes place during or after the last episode of season 2. Given the chibi styled animation and silly expression..it looks like an omake wrap party. All the characters are present and it looks like chaos. Debonair doing a 'ohohoho!' cackle with Nova looking embarrassed for her. Tatra and her sister dancing in the corner. Geo freaking out. Lantis breaking character and doing a peace sign. Then their is Umi and Clef lol Umi is a short distance behind him, clef appears to be slightly separated from the group picture and trying to make his escaped. Unfortunately for him, Umi notices and seems to be saying something to him which results in a slight pout and sweatdrop.
🩵Official Anime art on main ships💜
The anime centric art is one of my favorites released back during the run of the anime. Picture tells a thousand words. This one we have the girls rather excited, striking poses. So full of cheerful energy! Mokona joining in on it. Then we have the male love interests tiny in the background. A little cold breeze blowing by. Showing the stark contrasts of moods going on. Imagine the girls thrilled after a victory in battle since they are still in their knight armor. What makes this picture even more hilarious is that Umi who is tall, is leaning over and blowing a kiss to Clef who is our little short-king. Erm mage xD He looks a bit flustered, defensive (not sure what she wants since she is the unpredictable sea) confused how to respond to the obvious, forward flirtation. Get the feeling Clef would feel more awkward about public displays of affection. Since their love was a secret, even from each other. Picture captures Clemi's Romantic-comedic tension~ That little heart floating towards him!
The irony is that with the tragic ending of the anime, having both of them not speaking the truth of what was in their hearts...my headcanon is they came back somehow and now Umi is making up for that regret by making it pretty obvious 😂 Then we have a similar expression from Ferio with what looks like Fuu is gazing towards him and saying something. Lantis has a blank expression and Hikaru looks to be in her own little world of happiness. Lantis's reaction of being unfazed makes Clef's lack of composure and mild distress even funnier. Shows how easily Umi breaks through his serious 'Master Mage' exterior.
Wonder if any Clemi fans can make some fanfics based on this pic? 👀
Their first serious, emotional interaction. A meeting of the heart and mind. She is in pure distress, injured and feeling like a burden that cannot help. This caused Clef to 'phone in' via Mokona to communicate with her.
It requires trust to open her heart enough to Clef. Yes, Mokona can communicate with hearts but think it also requires the other party to allow it. It's a spiritual closeness where Clef both gave magic to Umi and was the one to calm her down to survive this violent situation.
A beautifully illustrated moment which led to Umi creating the water dragon skill 🩵💜
The Ascot Factor
I'll start off by saying I don't hate Asmi or Ascot. I actually find their scenes rather cute and wholesome. Just, I don't feel the sense of that romantic pairing that has a love for the ages. Know Ascot says he loves Umi in both anime and manga but it still feels like a crush, puppy love. Of course my stance on this may be a bit biased since well...look at the blog lol I do have gripes with the ship. Whereas Clef appears in child form he is most certainly NOT one. He was always quick to correct Umi when she called him one. Whether with comedic bonks or his own sharp tongue in their early comedic scenes. Mentally he has always been an ancient mage and ADULT. Umi also acknowledges that by calling him variations of 'old man'. Respects and has faith in his wisdom and power. Sought his forgiveness and council. Their is an age gap but let's be real...everyone will be young compared to Clef. Cephiro's grasp of mental age and the body that doesn't seem to age is different from our worlds concepts. Now, reason why I'm against Asmi is because unlike Clef, mentally he is still a child. He only recently willed himself to be an adult for Umi shortly before the Magic Knights arrived a second time. The aged body is like a disguise, a spell because he wanted to be. We know from his early scenes he was the enemy. Arrogant and petulant. He did mature in some ways with wanting to protect Umi but to me, doesn't negate the fact that he didn't have enough years to have his mind match the body.
With Umi's perspective it always appears to be platonic. Yes, she cares about him but it is that of a good friend. Or dare I say...maternal? She defeated him. Slapped him and scolded him. Set him on a path to grow as a person. A mother or protective older sister can do the same thing. Says, she is proud of him. I think the pride does stem from her having a positive effect on another and seeing him blossom as a person. Know if I were Umi, I would find it challenging to shift my initial opinion of the child I knew before to that of a teenager. Umi is also incredibly dense when it comes Ascot's flirtations. Irony is she is aware and sympathetic to Clef's emotions. Well some of them anyway.
Ascot is hopeful but Umi is completely unaware. She wouldn't answer about having one since neither once has made a serious move on her.
The manga does have them share scenes often but it's more from Ascot's pov. Umi is proud of him and finds him cool but we haven't had intense blushing shoujo sessions. This does come back to Clamp not wanting to pair her off in the manga to. Clef has been a victim of the narrative in terms of his lack of time to spend with Umi. At least on screen/page. He's incredibly busy and he is pretty much the substitute pillar without being a Pillar technically. He is the one others look to for guidance. While everyone's will pulled together to make the castle, Clef's will and magic is at the core of it. An anchor. Even at the end of series he still must oversee the politics of the land with the other countries. Being in the forefront of this new cephiro. His mantle of Master Mage seems to be more that recognition. He raised and guided young Emeraude. Was always shown to be by her side. Taught and gave classifications to peoples roles, rank and where they would be positioned in Cephiro and in connection to the pillar. A powerful adviser.
Here we see he needs to focus on keeping that barrier stable while the rest of the land crumbles around them. While ALSO trying to locate the road and figure out who is the next pillar. Man has much on his plate. Those responsibilities are a prison to with him not able to freely leave.
We saw this in the anime as well. Umi was kidnapped and he could only clench his staff and teleport her and Fuu back to the castle from where he was. Ascot on the other hand doesn't have those burdens and limitations so he can be near Umi more often.
Clamp has also shown characters in their series before that were glued to the protagonist with numerous scenes, harboring feelings but have them be unrequited. Example: Tomoyo and Sakura from Cardcaptor Sakura. Tomoyo had romantic feelings for her. Been with her since the first chapter but it wasn't to be. Sakura fell in love with her rival and essentially magical boy partner.
My hot take on the matter ^^
New Adaption thoughts as a Clemi fan (Spoilers!)
I don't want to doompost but as a clemi fan I am both elated to get better animation and some moments that were never adapted. At the same time, will admit the manga did tease Ascot more with her. Still see it as purely platonic from Umi's side. Reboot adaptions tend to follow manga versions almost exactly. Wonder if others are filled with hope and dread as I am? Do you think the clemi side of things will be fed with new scenes and nods to the previous acknowledgment of their relationship like the 90's adaption?
Clamp did release an illustration to celebrate the new anime. It's a minor detail but I do love that the placement of Umi was closest to Clef. Like an angel on his shoulder.
At least in the original manga, CLAMP actively made a point to not reveal the full extent of Umi's heart and who she ended up with. To keep her independence? The mystery? Fear of fan backlash or amusement over watching fan discourse over the different Umi ships? Not sure the exact reason. I am thankful we have canon clemi or mostly canon ish clemi in the previous adaption. Just hope it's not thrown away to tease the other side of things. Least it will be a happier ending even if left ambiguous. In the end Hikaru becomes Pillar and with the support of Umi and Fuu's prayers and hearts, the system is destroyed. We do see that they visit Cephiro often so long as they are together, returning to tokyo tower to will it so.
Find this last panel pic lovely. Hikaru talking about the people she loves and clamp slyly did a close up of Fuu and Umi. The characters on the right are those they care about both platonically and romantically possibly? Umi and Fuu both cherish Persea as a guide/friend. Fuu and Ferio are in love with each other. Ascot loves Umi and Clef is also someone in the manga verse that may hold romantic feelings for Umi. Since Clamp kept Umi's outright thoughts on romance to herself.
Can't help but feel with the girls going back and forth between the worlds regularly it's like Kagome from Inu Yash, travelling through the well. Instead of worlds it's from the present to the past but it's a similar concept. Like kagome with needing to make a choice to be with the one she loves permanently - see the Magic Knights as they mature further making the choice to 'leave home' permanently to live their life in cephiro. Mangaverse ending is ripe with storytelling opportunities. Not a tragic separation of loved ones that can never be together with the gates of the fantasy world slamming shut once their purpose was done.
Clemi has been promoted as a couple in popup shops along with the other canon ships in the past couple years, leading up to the new anime announcement so fingers crossed the anime will please our side of the ship~
Rare Clemi Evidence from Japan.
I was researching and found a Japanese blog that was a kind of manifesto/essay on Clemi. I don't take credit for it. Credit belongs to Yumeirowing. I'll paraphrase what was mentioned so us western fans can be aware. * They talked about the difference between the comfort scene in the manga/anime. How the girls were more unraveled. Hair down, outfit slightly different when with their love interests. Anime didn't show Umi with her hair fully down and her outfit being slightly altered.
Their was a illustration made specifically for the couples from the anime. Showing Umi is her manga appearance with Clef. Seems like it could have been a continuation of the comfort scene with them sitting down and sharing a meal. Could also be a triple date since Hikaru and Fuu had similar scenes with Lantis and Ferio.
Umi is confused why Ascot is there. Still oblivious to his feelings and seems to be interrupting the 'date'.
Next piece of evidence I think only fans in Japan would have access to is radio program style CD. A bonus you would get for I think buying the character song soundtrack. Called, "Tonight is Magic Night". It has the characters of Umi, Hikaru and Fuu acting as radio host personalities. Answering letters from listeners. Takes place after the last episode of the original anime, season 2. Girls give updates on what is going on in all their lives. -Umi teases about Hikaru's love life with Lantis but then Fuu says something. "By the way, Umi, I wonder how Clef is doing?" Umi becomes flustered and answers something she wasn't even asked. Umi tries to deny it in a way. "Clef looks young, but he's actually quite old. No matter how much I say I like older men, it's only up to about 10 years older at most. Clef and I are...um...700 and 31 years apart." Fuu reveals on the show that the night they stayed at the Ryuzaki's (Umi's parents home) together, Umi called Clef's name in her sleep.
(That's rather suggestive! Lol have fun with this piece of information fanfiction writers~ ♥)
Know this isn't manga canon but it does seem more uplifting even though the romances are off screen. Like an extended anime verse epilogue. The girl's are older -31 according to Umi and they reference their love lives as if in present time. Suggesting they do go back to see them. Umi and Clef seem like they are together but still trying to hide this secret romance even though everyone pretty much knows. With how she says his name at night during the girl's sleep over...👀
The girls go on to answer letters. Their is one from Hitomi-chan in Aomori Prefecture titled "The top 3 Most Popular People In My Class." Hikaru: "Number one is...Clef." Fuu: "What?! Clef? Even though Hitomi chan wrote 'even though he's old' on her postcard (laughs). They also mention Eagle is second and Lantis is third. When they hesitantly ask who is fourth, Mokona is the runner up, and the three of them end up giving wry smiles as the postcard reading concludes.
Next bit of evidence. More verification that the founding member and leader of CLAMP, Nanase Ohkawa wrote the lyrics of the character songs. In particular umi's 'Setsunakute'. Song is about the bittersweetness of love.
Comment on 'Yumeiro No Tsubasa' by the arranger and co-lyric writer, Hiroshi Sakamoto: "When I was asked to write lyrics for a love-themed song using Umi's character, the first thing that came to mind was the episode in episode 4 when she learns the 'water dragon' technique. Clef, who has been turned to stone by Zagato's power, speaks to Umi with the help of Mokona. Imagining how Umi must have felt at that moment. The Lyrics 'If your words overflow, I won't be afraid of losing and I'll be able to fly' were born.
Quote by Yoshida Konami from the Magic Knight Rayearth 25th Anniversary event: Lyric writing secrets.
Eagle Vision voice actor was one of the only actors that helped write lyrics for that album. On "Because I want to see your smile" song. The word "sea" appears frequently in the lyrics (in the sense of the "ocean") It is included after "dream-colored wings". -Songbook 2 "Secret Feelings" was also written by Nanase Ohkawa. This song employs the technique of incorborating 'light', "sea" and "wind" into the lyrics, which is characteristic of the openings and ending themes of this work. It includes phrases such as "I'm sure I can't say it" and "First love", and the content is focused on romance. The lyrics of the first chorus can be interpreted as being from the perspective of the sea. The second chorus as being from the perspective of the wind. -"Angels of the Holy Night" song: Sung by the Magic Knights and lyrics written by clamp. This song is written from the perspective of all three Magic Knights after they have returned to Tokyo following the final episode of the anime. Although the lyrics sing of feelings for someone they cannot meet, rather than loneliness or sadness, it expresses a positive and warm feeling that anticipates a reunion. The song is divided into solo parts, with lyrics for three verses in the order of light/fire, sea and wind. The final chorus is together. The lyrics for the sea part, "words I couldn't say," can be inferred to be the feelings that weren't conveyed to Clef in the final episode.
December 19, 2022, Okawa made the following statement on twitter/x Space Broadcast:
"it's a song that started because I wanted to make a Christmas song - The Lyrics are about someone you can't meet - a beautiful melody was coming together, so I purified myself and wrote the lyrics in a sparkling mood - following the example of the opening and ending themes at the time, included 'light, sea and wind' in the lyrics.
Clef is frequently featured in Youtube character introduction pieces for Umi Ryuzaki. * A umi themed perfume diffuser was released in December 13th 2024 by FAIRY TAIL perfume. This perfume is inspired by Umi Ryuzaki, one of the three Magic Knights, whose theme color is blue. The spicy scent gives strength to the base note, which makes you feel the strength of the water magic bestowed upon her by clef.
Original link to her encyclopedia on clemi is somewhere on this page. Might be region locked. Hope everyone enjoys the information.
Part 2 of Clemi OAV rewatch
Continuing where we left off - Umi wants desperately to go off to rescue her friend but Clef, even in his weak condition is still trying to protect her despite her feeling useless.
Clef feeling guilty is a character trait all iterations of him share apparently. Umi alarmed as he coughs violently. The strain from all the fighting and magic used is hampering down his body. Karma from the spell he used.
Clef senses something amiss. Spider senses tingling? jk Do love that Clef is incredibly protective of Umi. Going so far as to stand in front of her to shield her with his body. 🩵💜🩵
The irony of this is that Ascot both broke up their quiet, bonding moment with his untimely interruption but also funny how he is the villain in this version. Trying to kill them. Early in the episode he was sulking because he REALLY wanted to kill Clef but was denied.
Clef, as the pics tell - used magic to get them out of that situation for the time being. They are still true to their characters. Clef pushes himself too much and Umi is there trying to take care of him.
The romantic closeup and shared gaze. Clef telling her to remember why she became friends with Fuu and Hikaru. Trying to help motivate her to find what she needs to awaken.
They are in their own world staring at each other till Ascot disrupts it AGAIN by attacking.
Ascot knows what is up!
Clef in an act of protection, affection and sacrifice uses the last of his magic to create a bubble shield to Wisk her off to safety.
That loving expression...
Then a building falls on him. Not the most ideal ends for a sorcerer of his caliber but he did go down to save Umi's life.
Even though their time was brief, they formed a bond enough for Umi to fall to her knees and shed tears for him. That and being the last one standing to her knowledge.
A sad moment...after his sacrifice, fought and killed Ascot with her awakening her rune god spirit. She immediately returns to the location. Desperate to find him. Hoping he might be alive.
Then it comes out that he's ALIVE! Power of plot armor!~ If he died...think it would be a litttttle bit difficult free the countless humans he imprisoned. Aww, Umi is overjoyed to see him alive with Hikaru.
She races to his side, offering him water and again, trying to nurse him to health. Unfortunately, the time and place for that care isn't kind to them.
Clef filled with sorrow over believing they died..
They vamquished the enemy but...ends in tragedy in terms of our girl's hearts. Clef and Ferio tell them they will rebuild Cephiro and depart their world. Umi is crying and distraught over Clef leaving. Seems like a nod to her unspoken confession from the first series. Limited time and they were leaving anyway. Plus, only three episodes to show this version of the story. Fuu and ferio had their moments. Fighting and then coming to an understanding. Fuu also grew attached. Hikaru was protected by Lantis, fought by his side and he died for them to have a chance to win the final battle with Eagle. Least the main couples all did have some moments together. "They are going back, aren't they?
So much has happened. Since we have met...and even now. I know we've had time to say good-bye, but..." -Umi
Clemi OAV rewatch
Now to see the Clemi in an alternate world and timeline in the CLAMP universe. This one is more dark and has the cephirians more 'divine'. Makes sense given their lack of aging unless they wish to. I suppose they are immortal in much the say way the Norse gods were. Can still die if killed by another but youth wise - it's retained. Anyway, the mini series starts with a action packed scene with none other but Clef. He's an adult and a complete badass! He is showing he can teleport rapidly, do swift beast summoning's and project barriers.
Can appreciate the symbolism of original, young formed Clef from the main timeline always wearing white and in this dark, grittier adaption he is draped in black colors. Hm. Warning; Clef is so pretty - Going to be taking plenty of pics of him ♥♥♥
So we get Clef atop of Tokyo Tower. Any CLAMP fan will know this locations bears the utmost importance. Not just in this series but in many of their other ones.
Clef does serious future damage control...drastic much with the spell? Damn. Cloaks the entire planet in it while calling it 'Ditona'. Alcyione is still trying to be a thorn in his side. Trying to attack him before he casts the spell. Thankfully he is successful.
Umi was the first to notice something was off. Looking towards the direction Clef was in before he cast the spell.
Clef overdoing it every. Damn. Time. The burden of being the only one accomplish those certain magical feats.. Some things never change.
Well that is a difference. Other versions he is the 'Master Mage'. In this world he is a priest...fits with the divine theme they have going for their people. Still makes it more forbidden, his attraction/connection to Umi, a mortal.
Umi is as sharp-tongued as ever. Being the one to tell Clef to not leave her out of the conversation and still insulting Alcy which results in the dirtiest glare lol
As I said...drastic steps Clef. The cat's out of the bag here. This is another example over why Clef is the Master Mage erm Priest. Makes sense why he did it. Knowing this world will become a battlefield, he tried to prevent more deaths from the weak normie humans of this world by sending them into a mirrored time warp. Still caring about all lives even though they aren't his own people.
God help the earth if anything happens to the one who cast that spell though...
Clef stopping Umi from rushing into danger since she hasn't awakened her power.
Umi watching Clef as he sleeps. Girl be more subtle okay? His staff looks like it's serving as his night light or something. She wished he was awake since she has so much to ask him *tell him* This is their thing I guess.
These are beautiful shots with them. Aesthetically speaking they compliment each other well with their colors. You can see the fascination Umi has for him already. Clef able to rest in front of her, unguarded despite just meeting her and the girls.
OMG THEY ARE SLEEPING TOGETHER! Well...I mean technically. 😆
This keeps the atmosphere of the comfort scene from the first anime/manga. It's their private time alone together, quiet intimacy . Umi has a fear of being alone and it's endearing that even with the end of the worlds happening, Clef as usual is gentle and understanding with her. Umi argued with Fuu shortly before this. He heard her temper but he still is there to listen. Being a therapist in a way for her worries.
This scene makes them more human and layered as characters.
Then Clef has an 'OH SHIT!' type moment with realizing Fuu will have more information about why everything is going down due to her rune god/spirit.
The parallel with the hand scene...reaching out to touch her like in the other versions. Umi was emotional (as she tends to be) but Clef stops her so she doesn't get herself killed.
Ack ran out of space for screencaptures! So will continue this in a part two! Part Two
Recent proof Clef is a love interest
Know for many years in the MKR fandom those that weren't into Clemi would assume Clef's affection for Umi was purely that of fondness for a pupil like most of his other relationships. I don't blame them since they didn't have many subtextual romantic scenes. I tend to prefer quality over quantity. Their were recent releases of the manga volumes. Known as the CLAMP premium collection to celebrate the 30th Anniversary along with the new anime announcement. Covers show the Magic Knights with their love interests. Fuu and Ferio. Hikaru and Lantis with eagle (both of whom Hikaru proclaimed she loved) and then we have Umi. Not with just Ascot who had numerous shared scenes with her but ...CLEF! ♥ Manga verse supports. What is interesting about this cover is that Clef is smiling softly as well as Umi. Both looking straight forward. Then we have Ascot with a more neutral expression, looking away in another distance. Think if reading into the details and art choices...may signify that Clef would be the main love interest. Ascot is more the rival/obstacle to add more tension to the Clef and Umi relationship of 'Will they? Won't they?'
Clef's reaction to her
It's a small moment but still puts on clear display Clef's panic and fear for Umi. Clef is usually composed and calm but when Umi is at risk...not so much. Well Ferio also called her name out but think that was a misake on CLAMP'S part. He should have cried out Fuu's name but they are an already established couple so no mystery really ^^
Thank you for NOT confessing...
Well here we are at the final two episodes of the series. Title of this post is spoilery but I'll get to that later. With Clef and Umi and Clef in general, one must read between the lines for the subtext in his scenes. Clef hasn't had much in the way of healing and rest. Frankly he should be in a coma with all the magical energy he has been expending. It's going to get worse before it gets better.
Clef is in the Pillar trial room. He is the only and last line of defense. Castle is crumbling and in danger of disappearing like most of Cephiro. The magic knights are entangled in battle on the front lines with Hikaru's shadow, Nova. He shares with Presea telepathically his plans...
"Starting from this moment, I will begin supporting this castle with all my magical powers."
"The girls from another world are risking their lives in battle for US. I wish...to protect the ones I love as well. Using everything I have."
This a beautiful moment that comes full circle for Clef's character development and the impact the magic knights (Umi) has had on him. In season one, he helped guide them but it was a more passive role. Guiding from the background. He was turned to stone in the anime. Having him observe the tragedy that unfolded on the sidelines. Being an ancient sorcerer. It's understandable he would be detached from the world given a certain amount of monotony with existence. Another reason he might love Umi for. She is unpredictable like the sea she is named after. Disrupting his controlled life. She as well as the others with how they endured such hardships inspired him in this moment to act. To do what they would. Channel his will and love into protecting what he is able. Like they do in every battle. I know I quote lyrics from his character song but when rewatching, you can see the exact moments when certain thoughts transformed to the lyrical moments of the song.
"Yes , I want to release this sadness Because you are my courage!"
This scene does show Clef being courageous to put his life on the line.
"Don't worry. I won't die. I believe in the Magic Knights. I am certain they will return alive. If I die...those young girls will return to us in tears again." Keeping his will strong to survive past his own limits...with the hope that Umi and the other knights will not die either. The heartbeat sounds accompanying his words with his first vision of Umi and then Fuu fighting as hard as they can.
A dramatic scene with Clef own diadem which I assume is something that symbolized his responsibilities as a Master Mage shatters as he has a steely resolve yet becomes weaker...
Presea/Sierra is imploring Alycione to tell them the intel they need desperately. Confessing to her that she loves Clef. Even Alycione can tell Sierra's love is unrequited just as hers was for Zagato with him only having eyes for the Emeraude. "And even though you know...it's meaningless? Even if it's hopeless? You would do this for the one you love."
Then right on cue, we see the source of Clef's love appear. Umi's comes in in that instant.
Umi also tries to get the location from Alycione. Saying the same words Clef had regarding protecting the ones they love. They are the same heart ♥
"We WILL win. For the sake of protecting the ones we love. We'll make sure we win."
The magic knights combine their rune gods and powers to defeat Debonair. Hikaru is deemed worthy to be the pillar and so dissolves the pillar system so it's up to the people to stabilize the world. *takes a breath* Now to go into the final Clemi scene...
With the defeat of Debonair, it comes to light that the magic knights will to return was equal in power to the Pillar. It managed to summon them to Cephiro by their own hearts. Sadly, once their closure was met. Achieving the initial goals...they are now being transported out of that world. This is a heartbreakingly tragic scene...with bittersweetness. The girls are suspended in the sky and their last moments in the world they share with their loved ones is fleeting. Clef was the one to swiftly speak into her mind. "Umi...""Clef, I have to tell you something. I lov...Oh..nevermind Clef.""Thank you Umi..."
I remember hearing the audio commentary on my old dvd that said how lovesick Umi was. It has always gotten under my skin how other people say Clef rejected her. No. Noo. He reciprocated that love but I always felt that his thank you was deeply layered and not a quick send off response. He had gratitude for saving their world which is the surface meaning. Clef thanked her for NOT confessing. It fits his character with how he bears the weight of an entire world on his shoulders. A tearfully romantic and equally devastating confession with the limited time they had together...would have shattered both their hearts more than they already were. Speaking the truth would rub salt in the wounds. Especially with the gates of his world seemingly closing forever. Umi had developed emotional intelligence and maturity to hold back for both their sakes. She had formed a great understanding of him but their is that fear. I think she also thought she may be rejected. Clef is better with concealing his emotions than her. From Clef's side I feel it was impossible for him to not know of her love for him. He can sense vibrations, see into others bodies, hearts and minds. Can feel the nature and emotions of the land. She almost completely uttered the word 'love'. It seems like the thank you was also his way of being grateful for the little mercy to not remind him of her love...as she is ripped away from him. It can also be his way of silently saying, "I see you. I acknowledge you with seeing your sacrifice and strength of heart to not speak those words now..." It was a tender shield to keep the memory of their parting from being unbearable for both their hearts although I'm sure they were both in pain even without words spoken out loud..
That last teary eyed smile always gets me that Umi gave to Clef. 😭💔
The episode ends with the girls back at Tokyo Tower. Saying the same words they said in the first episode with wishing to return. While their is a sense of sad finality...the last scene is very open-ended. Leaving it up to fan interpretations if their will was strong enough to return for a third time. I would like to think they did manage to return. They had heightened emotions over Emeraude's death before being the catalyst to make things right their willed summoning. Now they have forged more bonds with the world and the loves left behind...would think that would be proper motivation to return. Anyway, my long-winded rambling have concluded lol

Not too much on the Clemi front in episodes 24-25 but we do see Clef without all the pomp of his fancy robes and mantle. A looksee into his bed chambers. We also have more insight in how enormous his heart truly is. His care for all his pupils. More on his guilt over what transpired from his lies to the Magic Knights. Proclaiming if they did have another pillar he would make sure to tell them everything with the utmost honesty. Have some pretty Clef pics everyone ♥
"They are even dearer if they are ones I personally have guided. " "The tear stained faces of the Magic Knights are especially painful..."
Another instance of Clef saying how he cares for all his pupils but how the magic knight's pain were the worse of it all. Clef could feel their pain on higher level given how in tuned he is with the land and everyone's hearts. How he had to watch every torturous second of that climatic battle from the first season.
Clef's understanding of Emeraude's pain
In a recent anime rewatch, in the latest episode their was a flashback over Clef's sorrow at seeing the late Pillar's sacrifice and melancholy over falling in love yet being bound by the laws of that station. While not as restricting...Clef since falling in love with Umi -would have more empathy for her plight from the past.
Close to tears over her essentially making plans for suicide since she cannot be with the one she loves. Mind you, this is someone Clef has known since she was a baby. A sort of paternal relationship if you will.
This is at the heart of it all. Clef's bleeding heart and pained cries to his future mirror possibly? They are human and shouldn't always have to be selfless with forsaking love and as Clef said, 'own happiness'. While Clef is not the pillar, he still is locked behind putting the world first. As the strongest in magic, being wise with knowledge of spells and the land. He has his limitations but in terms of power of the heart/Will he is 4th in terms of ranking. By the end of the series it's; -Hikaru -Eagle -lantis -Clef -Fuu and Umi
Even at the end of the series he still is the anchor for his world even without need of a Pillar system. Having to mediate and deal in the politics with the other countries. He is essential. He loves his world but he also has his own desires. Much like princess Emeraude had. Then again the deaths of Emeraude and Zagato was perhaps a sobering concept for Clef. Another reason he in his own way, trying to distance himself from love. Futile since it already happened.
By his own words. He can see the pain that results from the system and the permanent trauma his own beloved and the others he cares about suffered.
While Clef and Umi have their differences they have a deep resonance with each other. It was Umi that always, first considered Clef's feelings. Now that she had matured. Sharing the same temper and passions when provoked...they also have empathic souls. Perceptive and sensitive despite their initial rough demeanor. Clef in turn, is often touched by Umi's consideration of his feelings and position. Rare moment where Clef is seen and not just the Master Mage.
Do adore how CLAMP drew Umi here. With sun rays illuminating her from behind as she gazes at Clef. Am I the only one that sees it? Clemi side of things wants me to mention that in this moment she might be Clef's angel xDD
This conversation between these to shows how she and Clef are of a shared mindset. To be fair numerous people loathe the system in place but it's still adds to Clef and Umi being on the same level regarding it.
Clamp has focused on Umi's reaction when Fuu's addresses Clef's stance on the system behind the very world he has been devoted to for 7 centuries. That even though he has served for this long...he also can see how broken it is. This further demonstrates another level of understanding Umi has for him.
Umi confirmation of feelings part.1
On to episode 18 of season 2!
This is the aftermath of Clef saving all their lives.
Umi is checking on Ascot, staying by his bedside along with Caldina. A sweet moment initial for that ship but at the same time, a bit soured. Umi expressed desire to be by Clef's side but he declined and wanted to be alone.
Clef and Umi have similar traits when they are dealing with the emotional pain. Clef squeezing his staff tightly. Umi with her fisted hands on her lap. Caldina comments on the crazy spell he used and being worried about him. "Master mage Clef is the one I'm worried about. Casting that tough spell and transporting all four of y'all here. That was sure some CRAZY stunt." "He said that he was alright...and then he said he wanted to be alone."
Clef is much like a wounded animal in this scene. Wishing to be alone to lick his wounds. Although I think his solitude runs deeper. He went to such lengths to save Umi and I'm sure he was aware of his own feelings of elation at her return to safety. Being near him again perhaps? That he is trying to actively distance himself from those feelings of love. Or to try to conceal them better. He is an old man and they tend to keep their feelings hidden out of sight. A lyric from his character song gives insight into this theory. "But a millimeter’s separation–softly, I try to get closer, but…" "Even that painful feeling which words cannot remove, even today I hesitate to approach you as always, however"
He wants to be closer to her as a lover, despite his mind telling him to keep it as friends. This could be one of the cases he is trying to create that distance for both their sakes.
Back to the episode! Umi is saddened to not be able to spend time with him, keeping him company as he recuperates. Much as a significant other would feel. Don't want to say she is settling with watching over Ascot but I do think she would spend some time to check on him but that she would want to spend more with Clef. May just be my clemi mind at work but think she would have wished to have those quiet moments of companionship like that night they were alone.
Resuming the Umi and Caldina conversation: "Come on now. What's with the heartbroken damsel routine? Do you mean to tell me that you actually have a THING for that baby-faced, ole fuddy-duddy of a master mage!?" Umi gets up abruptly at Caldina's good natured insult. Only one who can say that about Clef is Umi xD That's my impression.
"Noo, it's nothing like that Caldina." Umi stalks out while weakly denying the claim while being in a flustered state. Nervously laughing it off. Even blushing about it. Caldina can tell what she joked about is actually true. Looking down on Ascot with sadness and pity with the reveal.
"Could it be..."
We even get a romantic vocal bgm melody to accompany this scene that eases into another couple Fuu/Ferio having a moment.
Not long after the castle is attacked. Not much time for him to rest. Umi is by his side. As Eagle attacks the palace, Clef uses more of his power to summon a barrier. Given he has used too much magic in one day...this mental exertion endangers his life. He's weakened again. We see a close up of Umi from his point of view with the blurry vision focusing on her expression.
Again, what Clef is doing to himself from the necessity of the situation is breaking her heart. He warns her that another attack is coming...
Another detail to note. That when Eagle attacks a weak point in his magical barrier it physically hurts his body. That connection to his spells 😭
More evidence of Clef as the main love interest and his love for her.
This is a continuation of my last post. Next Clemi moment takes place in episode 17 of season 2. Long story short; Fuu and Umi were taken captive from 2 of the three invading countries. Their is a bit of Ascot/umi moment were he tried to rescue her and took a hit for her. Quite chivalrous but then the big end game boss shows up. Debonair. She is about to kill everyone then Clef figured out a way to rescue Umi (..and the others lol) in the knick of time. Do enjoy the parallels of those that love Umi, having their scenes back to back. The difference in how they handle showing their love. Ascot is more earnestly straight-forward. Just like his method of fighting. To do frontal attacks. Clef is usually subtle but more calculating.
Clef has the girls syncronize their hearts to him. Needed to open their hearts completely for his spell to work. Know Fuu was included but this doesn't change the fact that it adds to the deep, spiritual bond Clef and Umi share. The level of trust amidst a chaotic, life and death battle. Clef and Umi do have a penchant for telepathic conversations that are of great importance.
Clef tried his hardest to pour most of his magic into rescuing her. Both love interests rescuing her and passing out from the efforts. *cough* Only Clef was more successful but he is the most powerful mage in their world. Forgive me for the screencapture spam but this moment was rather romantic. Umi crying out his name and running to him. Taking his weakened body into her arms. The rare time Clef actually dropped his ever present staff.
"Umi...I'm relieved...you're alright." "Oh Clef..."
His words uttered after casting such a massive spell. Showing his priority in his heart is Umi. Much in the same way he said he was glad to see her again when she first returned. If that's not a loving gaze then I don't know what is. Even as he struggles to stay conscious. Giving a weak, hint of a smile at the sight of her safe. He has a devotional love~
Umi's expression here clearly says 'that when the one you love is in pain, you share it'. She appears like she is ready to cry over him for how far he pushed himself for their sake.
Episode ends with Lantis and Hikaru (a canon couple) in an identical situation. Hikaru knocked out with Lantis holding her much like Umi does for Clef.
