i watched squid game and absolutely loved it...until the last episode

the last episode was so disappointing and felt so cliche

* warning squid game spoilers below the cut * 

having Il-nam be pulling the strings the whole time just felt so cliche. i rather have the big bad be some anonymous power.

also i kind of wish gi-hun started using his money sooner. listen i know that it would go against his character bc he saw the money as blood money. it definitely was. but i think it’d be an interesting subversion of expectations if he used his money sooner/more selfishly.

part of the reason, i think obviously, sang-woo took himself out of the game was bc one of them had to win. sang-woo did not go through all of those games just to have no one win the prize money. he knew there’d be no way he could win so he forced gi-hun to win.

i just finished reading sadie by courtney summers and it made me think a lot about the film promising young woman. mostly the ending of it so i’ll put this under a read more. 

* spoilers for the ending of promising young woman *

i liked promising young woman. i thought it was a good, well-acted (this movie made me fall in love with bo burnham) and well-made movie but i’ve never been able to like the ending.

yes, the ending makes sense. cassie’s life became consumed by what happened in college and her need for revenge so when her “life’s goal” is complete it makes sense that she’d die.

but ugh i always hated it. i get it but ugh i hate it. it left me so unsatisfied. i wanted cassie to get a chance to experience her victory (i don’t know how to word it), get lots of therapy and help, and go on to have her own successful life.

can a women get revenge and survive and rebuild her life please. i know there’s problems with that ending coming off as not realistic, cliche, overly positive but sometimes it’s just nice to see a character get a healthy happy ending that they deserved.

the more i think about midsommar the more i feel bad for christian

he was a bad boyfriend absolutely. him and dani should have broken up long ago.

however, he was a victim of the cult too (outside of being a literal victim)

he was targeted and drugged by the cult to be used by maja

this may be an unpopular opinion but i don’t think he would have cheated on dani if he hadn’t been manipulated and drugged by the cult. the cult used the cheating to finally break dani permanently and sway her to their side.

i’ve grown to have some sympathy for christian
