This post (which was written in 2022, before the second season) drove home to me how important it is that Stede consistently disavows the caricatures of Ed ("they might as well have given him horns" "they made him look like a ghoul"), repeats over and over that "he's a good guy", acknowledges Ed's failings but continuously humanizes him even when he's not present. It is Stede explicitly recognizing Ed's humanity, set against the insistence not just of the British but of everyone that Ed is a monster.

Ed is out there, screaming in despair "I'm the kraken, I'm a monster, I'm the devil", and Stede is telling everyone he meets that Ed is the most wonderful man he knows.

And Stede is right.

i get overly emotional imagining stede trying to find paper and the perfect bottle to write and send his letters to ed not only because it's just another way for him to show that indomitable hope of his, expecting one of his letters to reach ed, but also because he just couldn't contain what he was feeling, there is a big part of him that wanted to make things right and apologize a million times, but i just know he was also so excited to be in love, for the very first time, he simply couldn't keep it all in
