have gone a bit quiet on this beloved sideblog the last wee while - continuing my trend of catching up on shows multiple years after their original air date, i finally devoured iwtv s1&2 and i fear it’s consumed my media hyperfixated heart 🖤

it tickles such a different part of my brain than ofmd (despite arguable overlaps in campiness) and i WILL always hold these gay pirates in my heart - but for now i think i’m gonna hit pause

anyway - having a moment where it’s really hitting me how lovely the ofmd fandom is, and feeling a warm sense of awe that my tentative return to online fandom spaces in…10+ years? has been ignited by not one but TWO superb shows with CANONICAL queer ships where said relationships are so unambiguously central & beautiful & embedded in rich, delicious worlds ripe for rewatching & analysis & revelling

Just thinking how by the end of season one, Stede and Mary’s more authentic gender expression is an unstructured, less rigid version of what patriarchy imposed upon their spouse. It’s a move away from extremes, male and female in a binary opposition. Stede takes it even further in season two. It’s such a refreshing subversion for both characters, indicative of a new life, and a freer gender identity with their new loves.
