Weasley & Jordan: The Best Duo To Have Ever Lived | Roxanne & TJ
TJ chuckled at the ‘night before’ comment. Yes, that sounded like him. Because he always stressed himself out over essays, and more often than not, being stressed over homework meant that he would avoid it. And of course he felt bad about asking someone to check his work with so little time before it was supposed to be handed in, especially if they were busy too. At least he was comfortable enough with Roxanne that he knew he could ask her any time and she’d say no if she was busy.
Taking a look at the coin Roxanne pulled out, TJ was not surprised that it was no different from his own. He returned her grin, her words making ideas whirl in his head. “That’s a brilliant idea. If this person doesn’t want to be found out, maybe we can promise to keep his or her identity a secret in exchange for the reward. We’ll skip right past the token-finding business.” And there would be no need for lying or stealing or any of those other cruel things mentioned in the note. He doubted he’d keep his own token, because there wasn’t much point. He would never trick or bully people out of theirs, and he’d be lucky to get more than two at most. Hardly the 112 needed for the reward. It would be better overall to simply end the competition.
“You and I can split the reward between us, 250 galleons each.” He wouldn’t keep his share, though. He’d give it away to people who needed the money, perhaps in 50 galleon bundles. “I’m thinking the first step is to list all the people in the school who would do this type of prank, and see which ones would have 500 galleons to spare. Then there’s the handwriting. I wonder if anyone in the school would recognise it. The professors especially, they see student handwriting all the time. What do you say?”
The money wasn’t the only benefit to finding out who was behind this token thing. TJ had been concerned when he read the note that it would drive certain people to behave somewhat viciously, whether the behaviour was intended or not. As much as he didn’t like to think badly of anyone, he wasn’t so naive that he thought everyone would play as nice and fairly as he would. Especially with a reward like that. What the creator had been thinking when they created the competition was beyond him, though he supposed that they would find out, if he and Roxanne were successful.
Roxanne had never been the ambitious type (was never the one to think that winning was everything and there was absolutely no middle ground - that it was just two sides, completely black and white, win or loose) nor was she the cunning type. Mischievous, yes, but ever so slightly - there was a difference between her tricks, and the tricks she feared that the letter had implied. To lie and to threaten were just two things that she didn't think she'd have the heart to actually do so that was completely out of the question when she read the note that came with the coin.
She turned to TJ and decided that she actually had no problem if she just gave him the coin. What use was it going to be for her anyway? And they've always been a team - the best duo to have ever lived - best mates since before they were even born. Their fate has been decided when their fathers decided to become friends when they were wee-little kids.
At that thought, she shoved the book into her bag and linked her arms with his as they continued walking down the hallway. "Of course it's a brilliant idea," she said, shrugging her shoulder once before letting out a deep breathe. If they really do figure out who is behind all of this, it would be legendary. "We can both focus on finding the mastermind behind this because to be quite honest, I don't think I'll have much success in collecting tokens. I just don't think I have it in me to trick people…"
Besides, she thought that this was a lot more fun. It would be like a puzzle and those were always great, like a mystery. She fell silent for a moment and thought about what TJ said. Listing people who could possibly be behind this and narrowing it down to anyone who would have five hundred galleons with them was not a bad idea. In fact, Roxanne thought that it was a good start. But, "there's only one problem," she said, furrowing her brows.
"What if this is some kind of cruel joke to cause chaos around the school? Does this person even really have five hundred galleons with them? I mean, not that I don't think anyone could possibly have five hundred galleons at their disposal because there are some pretty well-off kids in our school, mind you… it's just," she stopped there, taking a moment to breathe. So many variable and what ifs. She thinks to much. "Hmmm, sorry, TJ. Just thinking. Dangerous, of course, but I can't help it. Anyway, what I'm getting to is this: anyone who could have thought all this up - brilliant as it is - would be a fool to use their own writing! It's the only way anyone could possibly identify them and it's the easiest and most amateur slip."
She shrugged and added, "If I was behind this, I would have used a spell or a magical quill to write it for me."
