John Dunkley (1891–1947)
Banana Plantation ca. 1945
Now at the American Folk Art Museum in exhibit called “Neither Day Nor Night”
Dunkley is widely considered to be one of Jamaica’s most important artists. This first exhibition of his oeuvre outside of his native country creates an international context for its appreciation.
He refused instruction, for example, studying art books and magazines at the Institute of Jamaica, where volumes on Rousseau and William Blake were important to him as were magazine images and advertisements.
