you can do whatever you want, because it's your hobby and your business. whether or not I personally agree with your choice is irrelevant. like, I am gonna assume you already know about all the controversy surrounding ai, so we don't have to dive into that discourse here. what you do is your business, not mine, not anybody else's. you don't need a stranger's opinions, approval, or permission when it comes to your hobby and what you do in your free time.

Not to be an old man screaming at the clouds but AI absolutely destroyed my field (translation) and along with it, took away the human component in international humanitarian efforts for Myanmar. I worked in EU and UNESCO projects during covid as a freelance translator with no degree and it was awesome as fuck to be involved in something like that. Consultation with CSOs. Fighting the Disinfodemic. It's so fucking weird to reminiscence about a great career moment from six years ago and then realize the whole industry is rendered completely obsolete by complete nonsense. I used to volunteer at translators without borders and while editing a machine translation (which is the result of a lazy human) is absolutely infuriating, at least there were projects in Burmese and people like me were able to do a quality control check at the end. Now we have none. Because all the organizations have backed out of Myanmar AND those that didn't back out are way too happy to use AI to translate medical content so they don't even come through translators without borders. Like none of our lives fucking even matter enough for people to care. I'm sick of it.

Linus has always been very clear that what he values is technical merit, "how good is the Linux kernel", and for better or worse he doesn't give a fuck about social or philosophical issues around the technology. He rejected GPLv3 for Linux because all he cares about is the "share-back" nature of the GPLv2 improving Linux on a technical level; he doesn't care about Tivoization or any of the other social or legal priorities of the FSF.

This stance irks people who want software to be a philosophical or social battleground, and I won't offer a strong opinion on whether Linus is right or wrong, but it has firmly been his position for decades and he wasn't about to change it now.

Honestly this stance makes a lot of sense considering the nature of FOSS. It genuinely doesn't matter how many jobs are lost to AI, and it doesn't even matter how many career opportunities in general disappear in its wake, because it ultimately doesn't affect the more volunteer+donation-based model that people like Linus work within.

As much as I disdain how many people don't put class solidarity first in these productions and either ignore the negative consequences on the economy this will all cause, especially for programmers who nobody (even prgrammers themselves, which is just bizarre on so many levels), ultimately, Linus isn't making an economic argument— If it works, it works. That's basically his stance, back then and today.

And this right here is why we shouldn't be trying to make people waste their time by convincing them to learn Linux. Whether its Mac or Windows or linux of the options are evil so we might as well use what's easiest. Honestly Linux might be the *worst*, because its entire mission is to give away something for free, so nobody can make a living on it, and AI is only going to make that happen faster. At least people working at Microsoft and Apple get paid for their work. Volunteering is great, but not when it undermines peoples actual jobs!
