You can now sort your likes by oldest and see the very first posts you liked on Tumblr. Some of my first are actually really goodāIād still reblog them todayā but others are⦠dating discourse, most which could be copy-pasted into a Substack post today and nobody would suspect. Plus Ƨa change.
In order to solve our disagreements about the validity of contrived philosophical thought experiments, it might be useful to concieve of a simplified situation that exposes the core of our intuitions, and see whether we think they're useful in that context

Opening Instagram or similar algo hellscape to see the latest trending comic that reads like "as a spunky queer comics artist, AI makes me depressed. But I know that the soulless machine could never replicate the human uniqueness of my work!" and then feeling the irony of that statement settle over you as you scroll down and every few pages are served almost the exact same comic concept over and over again, except with minor style variations, and the spunky queer comics artist has a different set of pride pins and/or cutesily rendered pets in the backgrounds.
It wasn't long into my Tumblr usage before I learned how to recognize that kind of comic within 10-15 vertical pixels of seeing it on the bottom of my feed and instantly go warp-speed scrolling to get past it. I know Malcolm Gladwell is a hack and his books are garbage, but every time this happens I'm reminded that there is something to the thin-slicing Blink thing.
Sports leagues and programmer-friendliness
I live close to Seattleās two major sports stadiums (which are right next to each other for some reason). One problem with this is thatĀ on game days my evening commute takes three times as long as it otherwise would and the bus is really crowded and unpleasant. So Iāve written an Azure workflow that runs every day at 2 PM and sends me a notification if any of Seattleās three major league teams have a home game that day, and then I can decide if I should stay late or leave early.Ā
To do this, I need to get each teamās schedule in machine-friendly format. The leagues vary considerably in how easy they make this.
Major League Baseball: Super convenient: not only do they offer schedules in CSV format, but they even have a specific file for home games, saving me the extra step. 10/10, you guys rock.
Major League Soccer: Supposedly they offer each teamās schedule in CalDAV format, which is reasonably easy to parse, but the links donāt seem to work. But they have a web page with every game for the year which is reasonably easy to scrape and extract. 5/10, fix your shit.
National Football League: No machine-friendly schedule format, and the HTML on their schedule page seems to be perversely engineered to be as much of a pain to parse as possible. It took me the better part of an hour to get a date-time string out of it. 1/10, get it together.
The NFL just posted this yearās schedule, so now that all three are available, I figured Iād share the code in case it helps anyone else:Ā https://pastebin.com/g9PApxqN. I make no guarantees it will work after this year if the leagues change their format again. Requires HtmlAgilityPack as a dependency. Released to the public domain under CC0.
My dad needed cataract surgery recently, and the doctors said "since we're putting in a new artificial lens anyway, want it to be a corrective lens so you don't need glasses* anymore?" I didn't realize this was thing, what an obvious and neat bit of technology.
* he doesn't glasses for distance anymore, but he now needs readers for reading up close. He says he's happy to make that trade

I seriously think that in the next couple years you're going to see so many people experience paranoia re: whether any given text/image they're looking at is AI-generated that it will be a clinically-recognized condition. It's happening to me to some extent, and I'm watching it happen on art sites like DA/Pixiv.
Within the last couple days both Sam Kriss and Alexander Wales have made āthe AI text is everywhere manā posts, the former spitting mad about it and the latter just kind of exhausted and defeated. And I definitely share a bunch of this feeling, but at the same time, sometimes humans do in fact use em-dashes and say āitās not X, itās Yā. I donāt think being hypervigilant for these kinds of questionably-accurate tics is a healthy way to engage with the internet. I think over time it will drive you insane, even more assuredly than the psychosis of the people who use LLMs too much.
But maybe there is no healthy way, I donāt know.

thereās now a whole genre of movies in which Bob Odenkirk tiredly dispenses homespun wisdom while getting beaten up and killing people in gruesomely over the top ways and itās a little odd thatās a thing
I think this kind of thing happens a lot. Every now and then some comedy or teenage actor will get put in an action movie which does really well, and then Hollywood goes āgreat, letās do that seven or eight more times with a slew of terrible films.ā It was the same thing with Bruce Willis, Nicolas Cage, Keanu Reevesā¦
