i love how casey mcquiston ends their books in a very open ended way. they don’t rush to resolve every issue and tie up every loose end. instead, they let their stories breathe. they let the focus of their novels be the small things, like the nuance of emotion. so when you read the last sentence of the last page, the characters feel alive. and they make it very clear that the characters’ stories don’t end there. you may not get to read on into their lives, but they continue on living.

thinking about the way music is a love language. thinking about how when jane would talk to august through requesting songs on the radio, because that was so much easier than thinking of her own words and saying it herself. thinking about how the way august, who had spent her entire year learning how to read between the lines, pored over these lyrics trying to see what jane was saying. thinking about mylas story about the portrait and the negative space, and how that relates to their arc with music and knowing about the other through empty space. thinking about how jane apologized through the radio, through the song she played for august. thinking about love of my life repeating again and again, only for august to take forever to realize she was in love. thinking about how jane sent that song, “just in case”, and about august sitting there, listening and feeling like jane was there next to her. thinking about how there’s big, grand, universe shaking kinds of time travel, like jane and the time blip, and how there’s smaller, more personal kinds of time travel. thinking about the time travel that comes in memories and echos and photographs and requesting songs on the radio. thinking about how when myla talked about time not being linear, maybe she meant the small things, too. maybe she meant the way time slows down when you’re with somebody you love, and the way their laughter feels like it can freeze everything happening around you. thinking about how jane and august are soulmates. thinking about jane and august.
