Galaxy Cluster Abell 370 with Dark Matter Map

They’re not stars, they’re galaxies. This is a NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope image of the galaxy cluster Abell 370. The blurred swirls are not an artefact of poor photography or a moving camera. The smeared light of the galaxies is due to gravitational lensing by dark matter. Shown in blue, the mass distribution, reconstructed through gravitational lensing, shows two large, diffuse halos of mass, consistent with dark matter with two merging clusters. In and around every galaxy, cluster, and massive collection of normal matter there exists 5 times as much dark matter.
