My pregnant wife was shot in the chest as she prepared to receive our first child.

I never imagined that I would write these words or live this nightmare.

My wife is in her fifth month of pregnancy, and she was trying to live simple moments of joy in the midst of the war. I went out that day to see some of the children's clothes and prepare the needs of our first baby that we are waiting for impatiently.

But instead of returning home carrying clothes for our child, she returned to the hospital soaked in her blood after being shot in the chest.

In moments our dreams and joy turned into fear and terror. We ran to the hospital where she underwent emergency surgery to check on her life and the life of our unborn child. Due to difficult conditions and lack of medical capabilities, doctors have not been able to remove the bullet, and it is still stable inside its chest until now.

If you were able to help or share our story with others, you would have given our family hope at a time when hope has become scarce

I actually did the sketch for this piece quite a while ago, pretty soon after I finished my VCR dragon painting. My brain was still stuck on object dragon creatures and a dragon with a crane game for a stomach seemed like the next logical thing to do. plushies interacting with crane games are one of those things that kind of lends itself to weird situations lol ("Claw Machine" by Eddy Atoms is a good example) I'm sure this wont be the last time it shows up in my work.

The sketch sat for a few months while I got caught up on other projects. the first iteration of this piece actually had a "claw" on the end of its tail, but I felt like it wasnt really in line with the more toon vibe I was going for, so gloved hand it became. I struggled for a while on figuring out the colors (especially since I didn't want to just jump in blind on a piece this big) but I finally got a good rough color study in

I decided to keep the background pretty minimal, just kind of invoking a dark, dimly lit circus tent. once the background was blocked in, I filled the main form back in with white, and transferred my sketch back on to the board.

I figured it'd be best to get the airbrushing I wanted to do out of the way first, getting the speech bubble, sign, and interior for the dragon blocked in. Although for the speech bubble and interior, they both mostly got painted over, but I felt like it still helpful in getting the rendering I wanted.

(also the faux woodgrain I put on the sign is a really subtle thing, but I think it added a lil somethin to it lol)

the majority of the time spent on this was probably just on getting the rendering of the main form. blending from the dark blues to the more light teals. I actually used my finger to blend a lot of this lol I would just use my brush to lay down a bit of paint and then just blend with the texture of my glove. I find it works a lot better than trying to blend with a brush at times lol

(I REALLY LIKE PAINTING HANDS U⁠^⁠ｪ⁠^⁠U) In the color study you can see I was thinkin of going for a more bright vibrant blue for the dragons face and midsection around the claw machine, but I didn't really have any paint that matched that intensity. but I did have some good greens lol I think it looks a lot better actually and ties together the other bits of green in the piece overall I'm really happy with this one, I think the mood of the piece really comes through with the colors. I'm cookin up some ideas for some more interesting paintings and process stuff, so keep an eye out!

It is absolutely no secret that I've been a little slack in the writing department lately. Between the stressors of the world, a body and mind changing daily with disability, and just plain ol' burnout from writing my first novel, I haven't had my groove in a hot minute. I must ask you to forgive me for leaving you all for so long, and forgive me, again, for leaving the website. When I left last year, I was tired. Tired of the harassment, tired of the anti-Blackness and the way my words were constantly twisted and misunderstood. I lost my confidence in my voice, and I thought there was nothing I could say or do that would be worthy of attention. But so much has changed inside of me, in my personal life. And yes, seeing all those kind messages before I left and even some of the messages I see now in my inbox cheering my return... It makes me realize that some things are bigger than me. I don't mean to over-inflate my importance on this website, but I have been something here. Someone to hate, someone to love, someone to shit talk and support and whatever, but what matters beyond anything to me, is that I have been someone that has made a space for Black lesbians, a space for lovers of horror and of the grotesque, a space for Black people to be loud and angry and disagreeable. I don't know how long I can maintain this, or how long we will have places like Tumblr to scream into the void, but as long as it is here, I will be too, and I hope you'll have me and support, flaws and writing and moodboards and collages and all. To paraphrase Norma Desmond in that fabulous Broadway musical Sunset Boulevard— Everything will be as if we never said goodbye!
