Every year he forgot
I love the dynamic in the Discworld fandom on this site, I think it's mainly because there are a lot of dormant fans, if you will, who've read and loved the books for years but haven't engaged much recently, who sort of reappear whenever a fun post is doing the rounds. It's fantastic. We get the cozy small fandom vibe without the screaming matches, but also get the popular posts from time to time, y'know?
YEP. In fact for some people it’s Emotions Day right now.
To everyone tagging and commenting with some variation of “Oh, I almost forgot that it’s tomorrow!”
“Damn! Damn! Damn! Every year he forgot. Well, no. He never forgot. He just put the memories away like old silverware that you didn’t want to tarnish. And every year they came back, sharp and sparkling, and stabbed him in the heart. And today, of all days...”
That’s so very meta of you.
IT'S EMOTIONS DAY TOMORROW
#oh I need to read enough discworld to understand what emotions day is
For anyone who's confused today, I won't spoil/explain what the 25th of May is in the Discworld fandom, because I think a big part of what's special about it is the way the plot unfolds in the book.
What I will explain though is that it'll make sense when you reach a book called Night Watch, which is the 29th book in the overall series and the 6th book in the City Watch subseries. If you haven't got that far yet, just take your time and enjoy the series! If you want to start with the City Watch stories then the first book you should check out is Guards! Guards!
And have fun!

There's no way you can make a cat do something it doesn't want to do. Half of mankind's efforts are along this line of ambition. Cat gates. Anti-scratching mats. Pro-pooping litter. Cat psychiatrists. All of this struggle is to convince an animal that has tricked us into sheltering it, feeding it, caring for it, and squeezing its little toe beans that maybe it should also do what we want once in awhile, if it's not too much trouble.
When you get a chance, go check out what your cat is doing. Chances are it's not what you want them to do. Sometimes, though, that cat does do what you want them to do, and you can take heart in that. Never mind that this is the same mentality that people apply to gambling and religious wars.
In nature, nobody would try to teach the bears to do what they want. Well, maybe some particularly hardy folks would, but they usually end up being eaten by those same bears when it turns out they forgot some critical aspect of ursine psychology ("wash your hands after eating bacon.") Why, then, do we think that things will go better for us once we bring the wild animal into our homes?
Me, I think we got lucky with dogs. Turns out that wolves really just want to be fed Snausages, and bite the tires of RC trucks, and chase Frisbees. They were just waiting for millions of years for all that cool stuff to be invented, and for a magical walking-upright wolf to present it to them. Everything in that regard went better than expected. We probably read into that success a little too hard, and now we expect the rest of it to all be easy too. Huskies aside.

Nobody likes a faulty duck. These wacky quackers have been menacing our parks, flying upside down into airplanes, ruining the viability of future generations with their screwed-up DNA, and for centuries humanity has just been told to take it. Well, no more. We finally found the customer service number for all of nature, and the return policy is pretty good.
Some archaeologists found it when they were digging under one of the pyramids. They thought it was a prank when somebody actually picked up, but then their horse got sick on the way home from the dig site. Morning after that? "Refurbished" horse. After that, they couldn't keep a lid on their discovery. Great customer service, which is to be expected when nobody has been calling them for several thousand years prior to this.
Now, I know what a lot of you are saying right now. You read in the magazines that this is some sort of monotheistic thing. All the religious folks at my old high school are calling it 24/7 and trying to ask for advice. There's no advice. This customer support line is no indication that there is a greater force out there. That phone number is for returns. Stop making it weird.
You call it and set up an RMA for some bad mallards, box them up, and the next day there's a bunch of new ducks in the pond that hopefully work a little better. Like I said, I don't think there's any further implications to worry about here, folks. Let's not look this gift horse in the mouth. Unless you have the receipt, that is, in which case make sure that shit is 100% right, or it's going back.
merry christmas to me, specifically 😌

if the government controls the weather, then climate change is not caused by the release of CO2e into the atmosphere as a result of human activity in general. were the government to be taken over by the right people, they could set the weather machines to "pleasant" and the problem would be solved, without anybody having to give up driving to mcdonalds.
also a lot of them think the government is run by shapeshifting lizards.
