“I have no interest in joining the Dai Li.” 

His golden gaze was fixed in front of a Dai Li agent in front of him. There were two behind him and one on either side of him. His foot slides back, his arms staying at his sides. He really did have no desire to join a group like them. In this situation, Hawks really had no choice. He couldn’t fend off all the agents by himself. His eyes narrowed. His brain was racing, trying to figure out a way to get out of this situation.

Out of the corner of his eye, he spots someone passing by the opening of the alleyway he was cornered in. His entire face and posture changes as he bounces past the agents, over to the tall man. He hooks his arm around the man’s coming his voice coming out happily. “Hey! I was looking for you! Glad I found you.” 

His grip tightens, his eyes sliding back to the Dai Li agents. He speaks in a low voice that only the man can hear. “Play along. Don’t fuck this up.”

“You know it’s not nice to up and attack someone with water.” He flicks his hands forward, black wires shooting out to grab the bender and throw him into a wall. You could never be too careful about benders. People had no idea what they were capable of. They could easily kill you if they so wished. And Hawks didn’t feel like dying. Not yet. He still had things to do. Many things to do. Including making his parents proud after being born a non-bender.

He ran forward, his hands and fingers coming out to press a specific set of pressure points that would stop a bender from bending. He flipped backward a couple of times, landing a safe distance away. His hands were held out with his index and middle fingers out. 

“Don’t make me paralyze you.”

Though Kyoshi Island was now a part of the Earth Empire and the Kyoshi Warriors had grown beyond just protecting their islands, the training and the ways of the Kyoshi Warriors still lived on. Most went on to protect leaders and people of note to the world, while some stayed back to work as police for their islands.

Mina was in training to be a Kyoshi Warrior though she didn’t really want to protect world leaders or be with the police. She wanted something more, something where she could help the entire world not just a handful of people. She just didn’t know what sort of job or life decisions would lead to that.

At the sound of an airship approaching Mina turned to watch. She noticed someone jumping off the ship and sliding down a pole. Her eyes remained locked on the stranger in awe and fascination when he landed in front of her she stared a moment before grinning. She didn’t respond to his apology but instead spoke excitedly.

“That was so cool! Did you see how far you jumped?! You were like an air bender you jumped so high! How‘d you do that?! Are you an air bender?!”

“Air bender? Nope! I’m actually a non bender.” He grins, holding out his hands. “Trained in Chi-Blocking for defense!” He looks up at the sky before laughing a little. “Wish I was an air bender. How cool would that be?” He looks around him again before looking at the female. “So these are the Kyoshi Islands. Ever since I started reading about them in books, I’ve wanted to come here, and now I’m here!”

He blinks a couple of times. “Won’t be staying long though. That ship,” He points up at the ship. “Will be taking off again soon. Back to Republic City. Can’t really miss it otherwise how the heck do I get home?” He laughs again, his eyes widening. “Hey, I know the Kyoshi Warriors can be kinda strict---” He lowers his voice so only she can hear. “You wanna come with me?”

“Can’t tell anyone if ya do. Have you ever been off the Islands? Do you want to ever get off?” He stops bombarding her with questions for a moment. “It’s pretty cool in Republic City. You see things you never think you would. You should come with me!” He bounces for a moment.

“You don’t have to of course. If you’d rather stay here, then by all means, go ahead. I just thought that maybe it’d be fun for you. I assume the Islands can get pretty boring, right?” He reaches out to take her hands. “You’d love it if you thought what I did was cool!”

He has no idea what the fuck just happened. One minute he’s just strolling. The next he’s attacked by this random guy, and he can just tell from the precise strikes that he’s one of those damned chi blockers. So naturally Dabi opens his mouth to chew him out, only to have his face suddenly grabbed and pulled down to the other’s level. 

“…what now?” He blinks in confusion. “Hey wait– what the fuck! What’d you block my bending for? I need that shit! I wasn’t even doing anything!” He goes to angrily shove the other back after her lets go of his face. 

“And don’t just ask my name after attacking me out of nowhere! Who the hell do you think you are?!”

“Woa!” 

He tips over, rolling backward and popping up on his feet. He gives the bender a look, one eyebrow raised. “You look like you were gonna kill me. I don’t feel like being killed today. Maybe tomorrow.” He shifts, putting his weight on his left leg, bringing up his hand to wave it around. 

“You don’t need your bending. If I can get away with no bending, then you can too. Plus it’ll only last for a while. Don’t worry princess. You’ll get your bending back soon.” He sticks his chin up, his eyes narrowing. God, benders could be so demanding and annoying. 

“My name is Hawks. Well, not really, but that’s what people call me.” His eyes lock onto the bender’s before looking away. He mutters under his breath, something about benders and being entitled before sighing. “Now will you tell me your name?”
