our passion for urban mobility lead us to creating the new urban mobility weekly feed on our blog. So, what was going on in urban mobility world last week?

Paris, city of lights unveiled a bold, $164 million plan to make itself “the cycling capital of the world” by 2020. This way they also want to solve French capital’s pollution problem. Read more on Wired and here.

Ontario, the area around Toronto in Canada, is investing $25 million in cycling infrastructure. Read more here.

According to Boston Bikes, the city has seen the number of estimated daily bike trips double since 2007, to about 80,000 people on bikes in 2014. They are currently dealing with their bike roads safety. A study of 30 miles of protected bike lanes in New York City credits them with reducing serious injuries to cyclists by 75 percent. In 2005, Los Angeles had 245 miles of bike infrastructure. Now, this has doubled to 562,25 miles of bike lanes, paths and routes. Read more here.

Check out solar bicycle lane in South Korea. Covered by solar panels, generating electricity and shading cyclists as they ride, it covers 20 km running down in the middle of six-lane highway. Read more here.

Update #19: The wheels are turning

Dear KS backers,

New year is in full motion for us at FlyKly and February was a very exciting month, since we‘ve received amazing feedback from you, our community. So many photos of smarter bikes and comments came in from your first rides. And believe us, each and everyone is priceless motivation for our team.

This is a quick update of the past months: we’ve established several test locations worldwide, where you can try out the Smart Wheel. We’ve launched crowd investing campaign on Circleup, received first reviews and journeys from our customers and built a new community page. We’ve shipped almost all EU and US orders and Smart Lights orders. We are now sending Smart Lights together with the Smart Wheel and we’ve published the Smart Light installation video.

Shipping to US

First batch of the Smart Wheels will be on their way to US and Canada in few days. Everything is ready, all the boxes are packed. All we are waiting now is transportation of the boxes to the port and for the ship to leave the port. You can expect an email with tracking numbers soon. Smart Wheels with Smart Lights included will be on ship to New York and from there they will go all around US and to Canada. We apologize that it took us a bit longer and the reason is delay in our production. We are doing things step by step, since we are here for the long run. We are all about lean startup are we are focusing on smaller quantities to keep the quality. Note, that there are two shipping batches to US and this is the first one, second one will go out in July/August. Thank you for your patience, your bikes will be smarter soon.

International shipping orders update

We have a new estimate for international orders, which is July/August. We have a new order coming up and since international orders are a part of our second big order, it will take a bit longer to deliver you the wheel. We again apologize for the delay and we hope you will survive riding your bike some time longer as it is.

European shipping update

We shipped most of the Smart Wheels by now and we expect to finish everything by the end of March. When we send your wheel, you can expect an email with tracking number.

I like the Smart Wheel's performance, it really impressed me and installation wasn't so hard. Moreover, wheel holds up very well in hard weather.

Taking the Smart Wheel for a spin

I've never ridden an electric assist bike before so I didn't know what to expect, that's why I was very surprised when the assist kicked in and I shot forward like speedy gonzales. The wind suddenly didn't bother me anymore and I didn't notice any bridges on my way to work. My colleagues like the wheel for its appearance, it's not like the other bulky electric bike we have around here. They hub would be almost unnoticeable on my black bike if it weren't for the white color. It's like the wheel just straightens out your route.

Storytime

I live in Westervoort, a village near the city of Arnhem, which is located near the Veluwe. As you might know, my country is largely just flatland but if you happen to live near the Veluwe it's not. I happen to work and study in Arnhem so I have to commute between Westervoort and Arnhem which is about 10 km (so 20 km a day obviously).

On my way to work I have to cross a bridge, not a very large one but it sure gets windy up there! I also have a few ups and downs but they aren’t very steep. In the Netherlands we have special roads for bike, we call them bicycle highways, they are marked red and cyclist on this road have the right of way over all other road travelers. I don't have to stop for any traffic lights until I get close to work.

When I have the wind in my face and the sun burning on my skin I appear to be panting and sweating like a dog. But that's only in the summer, the other time of year it just rains and snows a lot (or its very cloudy). That's just one of the reasons I backed this project, I'm also very interested in innovative technology, having backed several projects on Kickstarter which showed new ways of doing thing.

"When the Smart Wheel arrived after waiting for more than a year, I was very excited. I installed it that night and I was surprised by how easy it was to fit it on my bike. I took it for a ride and I was very impressed - who would not be, when you've got a motor assisting you.

We live surrounded by hills here in Stroud Gloucestershire in the UK and so having the motor will be a treat. The smallest cog on the uphills insures that I don't over-peddle and this allows the motor to do the work. The larger cog on the downhill rides ensures that I'm able to reach the top speed with assist. Overall I recommend this wheel to anyone."

Kickstarter update #18

FlyKly on the go: CES 2015, Smart Light shipping and Smart Wheel installation

We’ve had a very productive December and exciting start of 2015. In December, first Smart Wheels were delivered, first Smart Lights were assembled and shipped, we fine tuned our Smart Wheel assembly process and got first feedback from Smart Wheel users. In January, we were present at CES - the biggest consumer electronics show in the world, where we officially launched Smart Wheel. We’re so excited about Smart Wheel being the first all-in-one electric pedal assist to hit the market. Woo hoo :)

FLYKLY AT CES 2015

We made it to CES 2015, that took place in the beginning of January in Las Vegas and united the most innovative companies in the world with 170.000 industry professionals and more than 3600 exhibitors. We officially launched Smart Wheel on the market and won the race among all-in-one electric pedal assists.

 WHEN YOUR SMART WHEEL ARRIVES

Once you receive your Smart Wheel, please follow all the steps of installing the Smart Wheel carefully. It is very easy to install it and you will find the steps in the manual and in first installation video. In case you do not follow each step of installation, your Smart Wheel will not start properly, so take your time to install it.

Note: at least one hand brake is required on your bike. The regenerative brake is strong enough to slow down the bike, but not strong enough to stop the bike. At least one mechanical (hand) brake is suggested to be on the bike, back pedal brake is not enough.

JOURNEY - SHARE YOUR SMART WHEEL EXPERIENCE

First Smart Wheel review

You've been all waiting for the first review of the Smart Wheel, so here it is. If anyone else would like to share their review/story with us, please write to [email protected].

"As an owner of a professional ebike company  I can compare the Smart Wheel to other systems. My first impressions are good, it is really easy to install and assemble it. There is no need to connect a lot of cables to the controller or deal with the battery.

It’s easy for people to change the rear wheel and Smart App is really easy - it offers you just what you need for setting, but not more. I tried the app and it works with both Android and iPhone, however I had an issue with the lock functionality of the app, but once I held it very close to the motor (15-20 cm), it worked.

Motor is not too noisy, I like to hear that motor is working and it is not too heavy, so younger customers can pick them up and carry their bikes into 3-4 floor without an elevator to charge the battery. Driving experience is good, especially the recuperation brake is a nice feature."

Look back: FlyKly in 2014

Dear backers, supporters, passionate bikers, electric bikes enthusiasts, urban transportation change-makers, Smart Wheel owners and all others.  We had a very interesting and intense year here at FlyKly, our journey was simply amazing. We are proud of our achievements and here is a brief check of what we did in 2014. Of course, we could not have done it without your amazing support!

1. We are the first all-in-one pedal assist Smart Wheel that fits on practically any bicycle on the market! Watch out and look around, you may see someone in your city riding a FlyKly Smart Wheel!

2. We partnered up with ZeHuS and established our production in Milan, Italy, where we developed a top quality Smart Wheel, which is light, efficient and fits on any bicycle.

3. We released the Smart App in March and already improved it. We will focus a lot on further Smart App development in 2015!

4. We organized 10 joyrides in Paris, London, Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Zurich, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York, where more than 1000 people tried the Smart Wheel. Smart Wheel made many people smile – by enjoying our test rides. Check all the smiles here!

5. We partnered up with MSC and Linus and now offer a full bicycle order in our online store.

6. We developed the Smart Light and shipped first pieces. Smart Light is now improved as well – it can also be used as a portable charger.

7. We started shipping the Smart Wheel. So far, we sent more than 170 Smart Wheels to our Kickstarter backers and we will ship a lot more in January.

MEET TINE, PASSIONATE BIKER AND ONE OF THE PEOPLE BEHIND SMART WHEEL ASSEMBLY

Tine is one of the people that will make sure your Smart Wheel is assembled perfectly. However he is not just an employee behind the wheel, he also has an interesting bike-related history. Tine is 29 years old originating from Slovenia and currently works at a bike shop, but this is not where his passion for bikes started.

Tine has been competing in road cycling for 17 years for different Slovenian cycling clubs and was a member of Slovenian junior national road cycling team for two years.

But riding a bike is not the only thing that gives him goose bumps. He also loves all the other parts: assembling, repairing, selling, manufacturing …

He gained a lot of international experience while being a mechanic for New Jersey downhill bike club and he also got his hands dirty with the Slovenian national road cycling team.

In his free time, he manufactures bikes for himself and his friends and maybe one day you will buy one of his bikes as well. :) Above all, he loves assembling bikes and correcting other people’s mistakes.

Tine says FlyKly Smart Wheel assembly is his job and his hobby at the same time and that is why he loves it. He enjoys the whole process and makes sure that each Smart Wheel he puts in the box is just perfect. Could we wish for a better person behind our Smart Wheel assembly?

How does he assemble the Smart Wheel? 

First step: connecting hub and rim with spokes.

 Second step: attaching 18-teeth to the Wheel.

Third step: centralizing the wheel. 

Fourth step: readjusting the spokes.

Fifth step: protecting the wheel.

  Sixth step: pumping the tube.

Seventh step: inserting the tube in the tire.

When Tine is done, he just puts the Wheel in the box!

We have good news. It took us a bit longer to source the best possible wheel components and make sure the assembly line works flawlessly, but now the very first FlyKly Smart Wheels are ready to ship. We are excited to let you know that all the waiting and hard work was worth your while. The first Smart Wheels are on their way and expedited shipping backers all around the world together with first EU backers will be the very first to get it. After that, North American and International shipments will follow.

WHEEL COMPONENTS

We are proud to let you know that the Smart Wheel comes with top of the line components.

Sprocket: 18 teeth chrome plated steel sprocket.

Spokes: 2 mm stainless steel silver spokes.

Rim: Double walled alloy silver rim.

Rim tape: Textile rim tape.

Inner tube: Inner tube with french valve.

Tire: A high quality puncture-resistant rigid tyre for everyday reliability. Size 37 x 622 (700 x 35C), 47 x 559 (26" x 1.75) and 47 x 406 (20" x 1.75).

Each FlyKly Smart Wheel is assembled, tested and packed in a ready to ship box, including a charger and a manual. All the components can be easily found in most bicycle shops in case of repair.

COLOR OPTIONS 

In order to optimize the production, we can only offer two of our most popular colors – pure white and silver grey at this time. We took this step because we wanted to deliver our first Smart Wheels as soon as possible and limiting our production to only two colors enabled us to produce our products faster and more efficiently.

The color silver grey is a paint finish and not polished chrome. Here are our final pure white and silver gray colors:

We are having difficulties with producing the glow in the dark effect because of the color application process on the aluminum housing. To be exact - the protective layer of aluminum housing reduces the glow effect. At this time we cannot assure the exact delivery time.

We apologize for the inconvenience regarding the color options. In case you would like to change your color to one of available pure white or silver grey colors or update any other detail, please let us know and we will be happy to update your order.

Joyride Recap, Production & Shipping.

Dear Backers,

Past few months were busy and exciting. We have done 10 Joyrides and many of you came to test the Smart Wheel for the first time. Components ordered in May have been produced and most are already delivered to our production in Italy. We have optimized the production and setup the assembly. And we have made a shipping plan that will most likely enable us to deliver the Smart Wheels with no additional cost to you.

JOYRIDE 

Joyride tour was a huge success. We had 10 joyrides in following cities: New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Zurich, Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, Amsterdam, London, and Paris.

Altogether there was an amazing 1,084 joyride participants.

It was really nice to meet, talk and get a great feedback from you. Thank you all for joining the joyride.

We have improved the way you can control the Smart Wheel with the app. Previously the FlyKly app was only able to set the top assisted speed of the Smart Wheel. Now you will be able to set the top assisted speed (0-25km/h or 0-16mph), Assistance level % and Motor brake level %. This enables you to personalize the Smart Wheel to your own needs. iOS and Android app.

SMART WHEEL PRODUCTION

In May we have placed an order for components. For the past few months they were being produced and delivered to our production in Italy. We are testing each component to be up to quality standards and in beginning of September we will start to assemble and ship the first Smart Wheels.

In production, we have optimized the production process by adding the aluminum injection mold for the housing. Previously we have been working with CNC machines to produce the aluminum housing. With an injection mold we will produce the housing much faster and more efficiently.

In order to optimize the production and assembly we will produce Smart Wheels in color batches. First two colors produced will be our most popular White and Silver. Other colors will take longer to be produced due to smaller quantities. The Glow in the dark takes an extra step in production process therefore it will be arriving last. At the moment we have assembly capacity of 80 units a week in order to assure the highest quality of your Smart Wheel. By time, we will be increasing the assembly capacity by optimizing the production and assembly process further.

SMART LIGHT PRODUCTION 

We had to make some corrections on the injection molds for the housing of the Smart Light in order to make the production process smoother. On the electronics we had a charging bug. Now the electronics work perfectly as you can see in the video below.

Smart Light production is now on the way. We have all the components prepared (electronics, battery, LED light, and handlebar holder). The Smart Light will start to ship around the same time as the Smart Wheel. Smart Wheel backers will receive the Smart Light together with the shipment of the Smart Wheel.

SHIPPING 

Due to high cost of production of Smart Wheel, we had to look into different ways to deliver Smart Wheels to you around the world. Our main priority was to find a method to deliver free of charge to you.

The cost of shipping the Smart Wheel by air is expensive because of the packaging weight & volume and lithium batteries. In order to lower the costs of shipping and provide free shipping to you, we have optimized the delivery and assembly process. We will ship by vessel and ground mail. For backers outside of Europe, we will ship only hubs to a destination near you and assemble the wheel there. From there we will ship it by ground mail. This method will take more time but it is the most cost efficient.

Since our production is in Italy and per our color production schedule, the first deliveries will be made by ground mail to EU backers who choose white or silver Smart Wheels.

For North American backers we will produce the hubs and ship them in bulk by container on a vessel to NYC. In NYC we will assemble hubs to wheels and ship them from there. This method will take more time but it is the most cost efficient. Also, with this method there will be no import customs fees and taxes for backers.

For Asian, Australian and rest of the international backers we will deliver the Smart Wheels in similar way as for North American backers.

Due to this shipping methods, we estimate your Smart Wheels to arrive between end of September and February 2015.

1. Switch to white or silver color.

2. Pay for faster shipping option. We can ship your Smart Wheel with priority mail directly to you from our production in Italy.
