Michael Clifford is not straight: a masterpost
I’ve been meaning to make this post for a while now, because I have seen some people who got mad at Michael for “joking” he was bisexual in a twitcam years ago. Personally I don’t believe he was, which is something I will get into later in this post. I feel like many people are not connecting the dots between things Michael has said and I think it’s time people start taking him seriously. Another reason I am making this post is because I’d like to have some things in 1 place, so it’s like an archive. If something ever comes up I would not have to search countless of other blogs or YouTube video’s to find 1 specific moment. There also don’t seem to be many masterposts in this fandom and if there are they haven’t been updated in a while.
A bit of a disclaimer beforehand. I believe in Muke as a couple. I am not entirely sure what they are at the moment or what their exact status has been over the years. But I genuinely believe that they have been involved (and possible are still) in a romantic relationship. I don’t wanna assume anyone’s sexuality, unless they have come out and say so themselves, so I’m not discussing my personal opinions about that on this blog. I encourage everyone else to do the same. Also, please don’t go bother Michael or anyone around him with questions or demands regarding his relationship(s) and sexuality. If he wants us to know (or is able to) then he will tell us. The point of this post is to maybe open a few eyes and take Michael seriously when he hints at not being straight, because he has given us so many hints and yet many people play it off as if he was joking. To finally start this post, here are some reasons I think Michael is not straight.
This one seems pretty obvious, so I’m not going to go into too much detail here. Because Muke on its own is just a small part of why I think Michael is not straight. But it simultaneously is also a big part, because it’s what made me make this post in the first place. Even if Michael and Luke have never been in any sort of relationship that’s more than platonic, I would still believe Michael is not straight. Back to Muke, I cannot simply narrow it down to 1 moment. There is so much of them and I keep finding new stuff. I highly suggest taking a look at these posts as a start: Muke masterpost, Muke gifs. Michael saying he’s bisexual
Now this is a moment that has been talked about the most. The infamous Twitcam where Michael says “I just gonna tell everyone that I’m bisexual”. At 23:17 it starts with Calum reminding everyone that he is straight and likes girls. Michael then feels the need to mention that he is bisexual. To which Calum then replies “You shouldn’t have said that, cause everyone is gonna take it seriously”. Many people seem to think Michael was joking here, maybe he was. I’ve seen Michael make jokes before and he seems quite serious here if you ask me. He’s not laughing it off. The fact that Calum felt the need to clarify that Michael was joking tells me he probably wasn’t. Michael himself could have laughed it off and said he was kidding, but he never did. It wouldn’t have been a great joke, for obvious reasons, but it would have been more believable as a joke. This just seems like Calum was covering for him.
We all know Michael has a very particular sense of humor. He is known to say some crazy things at times. It’s sort of what we love about him as well. He jokes around a lot and sometimes appears to say things for shock value. Though it’s hard to deny Michael seems to love making jokes about things like dicks, penisses and balls. Now ofc, a lot of these were made when he was still quite young and can be considered as just a joke. They are jokes in the end. But that doesn’t mean we don’t need to take them at least a little bit serious. It’s easy to hint at not being straight while playing it off as a joke. If someone were to ask about it he could say “oh it’s just a joke, it doesn’t mean anything”. I think the main reason why many people don’t consider the option that he may not be straight is because they don’t take him seriously. He’s gotten good at the joking and he knows he can get away with it, without it raising too many eyebrows. Here are a few examples:“
All I can talk about is penis” (55:35)
“Fangirling” over Calum (5:43 & 7:30)
Dick on dick (to be fair, this is a very not straight thing from all 3 of them, but Michael definitely seems very invested in the topic)
“Great shape” (0:48) (LBR he was making a dick joke)
“Wanna make out?” (He says it so casually, I almost feel he would have gone for it if Calum had said yes)
“The most handsome man I’ve ever seen” (1:40) (I don’t even know what to say about this. Sure it’s a compliment, but it’s not generally something a straight man would notice or say about another man.)
Belly shots (0:11) (He would even do it sober, need I say anything else?)
Body shots and Calum’s dick (0:21) (This one and the previous one are both from 2018, so I can’t even consider this teenage humor. This is probably the least straight thing I’ve heard him say so far.)
Michael thinks Luke is fit
So the question for this starts at 2:42. Ashtons first starts talking about Duke. Followed by saying Luke is the one to most likely eat everything in the fridge. When Ashton starts explaining why, it gets interesting. Because “he’s a fit, strong, handsome man”. Then watch Michael adding “he is”, with a very knowing look at the camera. Very unnecessary to add, but I guess Michael had to make his thoughts clear.
This moment continues to blow me away every time. It’s so blatant and yet so few people seem to have picked up on it. Which is probably the reason he gets away with it. It all starts at 2:55 when the interviewer asks Michael a question about forgetting his lyrics when he spots a hot girl in the audience. Calum is not down for heteronormative questions it seems, cause he feels the need to add “and/or guy”. Why is that Calum? Do you know something? Then Michael adds “let’s be broad about this”. A little bit further Luke starts looking behind Michael at Ashton and Ashton looks back at Luke. Meanwhile Luke is scratching his neck, almost as if he’s signaling Ashton to save the conversation since Michael seems to be getting stuck. Then Ashton jumps in with “ Michael says a lot of things”. With that he downplays what Michael just said and what he supposedly said that led to the question in the first place. Basically Calum is saying that there is a possibility Michael could be distracted by a hot guy in the audience as well. Implying that he doesn’t (just) like girls. Now maybe they were just trying to be inclusive, but it seems a bit unnecessary if Michael is just into girls. Let’s not forget that it was Calum and not Michael who technically started the whole thing. If you don’t take the things Michael says seriously then maybe at least give this one the benefit of the doubt.
Finally the last moment I want to share. Michael talking about a boyfriend. This is from a livestream of Michael playing League Of Legends with friends. At 17:33 his friend starts describing to their other friend what to do if your boyfriend doesn’t want to get you a coke. Then Michael comes in and says “that works, it works, I do it on my boyfriend all the time”. Now I don’t know if he forgot this was being recorded, or if he just didn’t care. But he literally said “boyfriend”. The video does not lie, there is no denying he said boyfriend. Now does this sound like a joke? I don’t hear anyone joking or laughing, it wouldn’t even be funny if he meant it as a joke. My best guess is that he got distracted by talking to his friends and playing the game and he momentarily forgot this was being recorded. He doesn’t even seem to realize he said it, since he doesn’t seem to correct it. Now, I don’t know who that boyfriend is, could be Luke, could be someone else. We have no real way to know unless Michael decides to tell us.
Of course all of this is speculation and I have no way of knowing with 100% certainty that Michael is not straight unless he decides to share it with us. If Michael is not straight this means that he is closeted or chooses to not discuss his sexuality. Either because people have told him not to or by choice. We should respect this and not try to force a coming out or any other sort of reaction. This can be extremely harmful and damaging. Outing someone on purpose is never alright.
Many of these moment individually could be seen as a joke, but sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture. One moment is just one moment, but if someone consistently seems to make comments that could be considered as comments about same sex attraction, then maybe you need to start taking them seriously. Sexuality is a thing that can change, maybe Michael considered himself bisexual at some point and identifies as something else now. That doesn’t mean he was lying when he said he was bisexual. Sometimes you identify with one label until you discover something else that fits better. Or you decide not to label it at all. Whatever Michael identifies as is fine, even if it’s straight.
I want to say once more, do no share this post or any speculation regarding his sexuality or love live with Michael or the people around him. This post is made for fandom discussion only. Before someone decides to accuse me of outing him. These are things Michael (or in some cases people who know him well) have decided to say or do, I am simply picking up on the signals. If you still believe Michael is straight after seeing this, that’s fine by me. We don’t have to agree, as long as we can all stay in our lanes and have respect for each other’s opinion everything wil be fine.
