French or not, it really doesnt matter if politicians or civilians (or both) dont like our Second amendment to the Constitution of the United States. It is our right. Only such an arrogant bastard would tell people how they can defend themselves. The Second amendment grants us the right to form militias to protect the people and for civilians to keep and bear arms in the event that oh, I dont know, a facist dictator goes on a killing spree of disarmed civilians and decides to snatch up all the land they can amass. That 300 year old document you're talking about (known as the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES) is also what allows you to say what you want without fear of punishment. I.e being an asshole. It also gives you freedom of religion, which historically, is pretty fucking amazing. Where did you come up with those off the wall stats anyway? Riddle me this: what do you call a person with a months worth of canned food, a fire extinguisher, a first aid kit, and a family plan and rendezvous point if a disaster happens? You would called that person prepared, wouldn't you? Now put a firearm into that plan, and suddenly, we're all paranoid? I think not. It's a plan, not paranoia. From a very early age, our parents and our mentors tell us that we need to be prepared for whatever life throws at us. So why would being prepared for the fuck face that kicks in my door at 3 am be a bad thing?

BUT GOD FORBID WE TALK ABOUT FUCKING GUN CONTROL AS A PREVENTIVE MEASURE FOR SCHOOL (HOME, DRIVE-BY ETC) SHOOTINGS.

I’m fucking disgusted. My niece will be entering school in the fall and I’m honestly terrified because everyone refuses to consider the possibility (read reality) that there is an actual problem regarding gun violence.

For one, stricter background checks (I don’t have the links on me but apparently it’s reletively easy to get around background checks. correct me I’m wrong though!). Stricter penalties for illegal trading. And reconsidering the types of guns that are on the market. For example, I don’t believe high powered military rifles should be avaliable outside of the military. As side note, I was indirectly threatened with an AK47 (while my friends were directly mentioned in the threat). This particular person was in the military and had the gun in his car and showed to the people at the party. Personally, I know nothing about that particular gun but the person he showed it to was able to verify that it was one. Despite contacting the police (who later contacted his supervisor? general? I’m sorry that I’m not up on terms of the military chain of command) and as far as I know nothing was done since we had no proof that we were threatened, I do know that he still a part of the military. Granted, that story does color my perception but at the very least, the ammunition for those types of guns should be taken away. There is no need for it.

I don’t hate guns, I live in a very rural area where guns are a part of life. I respect that people feel safer, enjoy collecting, like to hunt…etc etc etc. I’m not saying we should take away guns. But the fact remains that America does have gun violence problem. I respect your right in owning a gun but it’s also my right to feel safe. I shouldn’t have to worry about being shot. I shouldn’t have to worry that my neice won’t come home because someone walked into her school with a gun. I recognize that society shares some blame - I agree that schools should get more money for securtity and counsulers who are able to identify violent individuals. I think that we should stop stigmitzing mental health (despite that the mentally ill are more likely to be victims, again sorry no link).

Again, I’m not blaming this solely on the fact that guns exisit. I’ve read your profile and I know you’re very adement about guns. I’m not expecting you to change your mind and I’m not attacking you on your beliefs. All I’m saying is that I believe that control won’t hurt. A violent indvidual shouldn’t be able to buy a gun off the street or at a trade show (thereby passing background checks, again no link on me).

Bullet proof white boards and backpacks are not going to work (not to mention being heavy and very expensive, however they are a valid idea). Where would the funding for these things come from? People need a means to fight back instead of something to hide behind. Criminals don't want opposition.

As for the "military style" rifle bit, that's just it; a style. They mostly just resemble those rifles (while functioning the same without full-auto capabilities of course). More than just military style rifles fire fire the same type of ammunition also, so getting rid of the ammo isn't going to work either. That would mean doing away with about 60-70% of rifles in the US. However much you hate the response "criminals don't follow the law", he's right. Laws and punishments do little to nothing to deter, or even hinder a criminal from doing something if they really want to, so making more restrictive and harsher laws is in fact redundant and only hurts the upstanding people who obey the law.

The United States really doesn't have as big of a gun violence problem as everyone is making it out to be (aside from Detroit or Chicago where gun control is very very strict and murder rates are appalling). In fact, gun violence is down since the sale of arms has gone up.

Regarding the need for "military style" rifles, I don't believe the government should be able to do or have something that the citizens cannot, and vice versa. But that's a whole other story.

I mean no disrespect, I'm just stating my case
