it's so amusing to me that people are calling jerbel a "proship" when:

not how that word works. you can be proship, but something is not a proship.

in what world is it problematic?

every day, the criteria for what is and isn't a problematic ship gets narrower and narrower. i feel like jerbel wouldn't have been problematic a year or two ago.

i've seen arguments ranging from "their age gap is inappropriate!" (they're both adults... mabel graduates at the end of the movie and is probably 22 - 24) to "they have father/daughter vibes" (not picking up on this. doesn't automatically make a ship problematic, either.) to "she's clearly asexual" (I like this headcanon myself, but where is it implied she's asexual other than the fact she has no canon romantic interest?) to "she's lesbian coded" (because of the bikini kill song? not how that works either.) and so on and so forth. the funniest argument I've seen yet is "its just gross!" which, like... I thought we stopped using our comfort as a moral compass a long time ago.

Dennis learnt being from a big family that when you were useful people relied on you and wanted you around. He always kept the apartment tidy and offered to cook so trinity would keep him living with her.

When Jack and Robby invited Dennis into their marriage, he knew he needed to stay useful so that they kept him around. The married couple had a lot of inside jokes and could read each other so easily, everytime Dennis felt left out he cleaned something or completed a chore around their house.

Dennis was having a hard week, the feeling of being left out was bubbling up, the house had never been so clean. the trio had two days off together and Dennis suggested the farmers market, something he could lead and be included but little did he know, Jack used to go there all the time, he knew people that Dennis didnt. Instead he spent the whole morning trailing behind like their kid, his mood was even lower.

When they got back, Robby and Jack collapsed onto the sofa and patted the spot in between them to watch trashy TV, Dennis declined and left to the bedroom to gather the tools he had acquired since moving in with Santos. Slowly he got to work, he fixed the leaky tap, attached the handle to the desk and installed the new light fixture Jack had ordered and forgotten about before Dennis even joined the pair.

After spending all afternoon away from the couple, they called him out to the lounge to eat the takeaway they ordered. Even as tired as he was Dennis could see the looks they sent each other about him, even growing sadder that they knew each other's order but had ordered the wrong thing for him. It was probably an accident as he got the chow mein from the other takeout place, not this one, but it felt important.

The conversation was hesitant but Dennis found himself becoming more on edge as Robby and Jack exchanged more looks. Useful, he needed to be useful. He got up before finishing his food, cleaning up, not looking at the duo. Jack was the first to call out to him.

"Dennis come sit down, we're going to watch Robbys old man movie"

Dennis didnt know what that was.

"I just need to finish cleaning this first, are the pipes still leaking under the kitchen sink?"

"Dennis will you just sit the fuck down"

"I will, I just -"

"For fucksake Dennis, I thought we were dating you not hiring you"

Jack was frustrated and turned to his husband as they spoke quietly to each other, Dennis could feel the tears coming feeling left out again.

"I was just trying to be useful, I just wanted to stay"

It was Robby that heard him and pulled away from his husband to stare at Dennis in confusion. Then both were looking at him wearing the same looks and saw the misery on Dennis’s face become frustrated.

"This is what i mean, you guys are together, married, im the add on. I dont know your inside jokes, I dont know your friends, I cant read your minds like you can"

Robby pulled Dennis over to the sofa to join them and put him in the middle as his tears began to dry up. Both pairs of hands were on him to comfort him, Jack was once again the first to speak.

"Dennis, a lot of it is because we are old men and we have known each other for so long. You and Robby can read each other so well at work without talking, we have inside jokes, especially about mocking Robby, the rest will come in time. About the marriage, if I you want i can divorce the old guy and marry you so that you know you are here to stay always"

"Hes my student doctor, id marry him, it would be better for the insurance."

The rest of the night was spent with the three watching Robbys old man movie, telling stories of the past so that Dennis knew, and wandering hands and lips between them.

Three days later Dennis wore the ring that matched the attendings wedding bands and tried not to let his fear of not being useful ruin his time with the men he loved.

It even took him two weeks to get to the leaking kitchen pipe, it took him double the time as Jack was on a day off and Dennis finally let himself get distracted from his task with wet kisses and clothes coming off. Robby was home just in time to give Dennis his reward for fixing it, he was getting paid in their bedroom. He had a different reason to fix things now instead of needing to feel useful.

I've already said that my number one piece of writing advice is to read.

But my number two piece of advice is this: be deliberate.

Honestly this would fix so many pieces of bad writing advice. Don't forbid people from doing something, tell them to be conscious and deliberate about it. This could help stop people from falling into common mistakes without limiting their creativity. Black and white imperatives may stop a few annoying beginner habits, but ultimately they will restrict artistic expression.

Instead of "don't use epithets": "Know the effect epithets have and be deliberate about using them." Because yes, beginners often misuse them, but they can be useful when a character's name isn't known or when you want to reduce them to a particular trait they have.

Instead of "don't use 'said'" or "just use 'said'": "Be deliberate about your use of dialogue tags." Because sometimes you'll want "said" which fades into the background nicely, but sometimes you will need a more descriptive alternative to convey what a character is doing.

Instead of "don't use passive voice": "Be deliberate about when you use passive voice." Because using it when it's not needed can detract from your writing, but sometimes it can be useful to change the emphasis of a sentence or to portray a particular state of mind.

Instead of blindly following or ignorantly neglecting the rules of writing, familiarize yourself with them and their consequences so you can choose when and if breaking them would serve what you're trying to get across.

Your writing is yours. Take control of it.

It probably sounds like I'm preaching to the choir here because most of my mutuals are already great writers. But I'm hoping this will make it to the right people.
