Well, his bro was honestly trying. Papyrus was always trying his best, and Sans couldn’t fault him for that.

“well, ah… most do? i guess it depends on how small they are. if you got a small one, then the answer is probably no.”

“WELL SHE IS SORT OF LITTLE…”

The skeleton leans down and holds out a hand to represent a height- only a bit shorter than Sans, but Sans really wasn’t that tall in the first place.

The shorter skeleton shrugged. true, he wasn’t very tall. But the height Papyrus was describing was about the height of a child. Or at least a very short adult. 

“yeah, you’re probably fine. mostly i’d be worried about the kid even wanting to be a pet in the first place. you sure you can take care of a human? like i said, they’re not rocks.”

Good, he was not dealing with diapers. He was fine with a pet, not a baby. Hannah could probably handle herself. Probably.

“SANS, ITS EITHER THIS OR SHE SLEEPS NEXT TO THE DUMPSTER BEHIND GRILLBY’S! I AM NOT HAVING THAT!”

The tall skeleton in question steps up to the lump of snow and paces around it, a gloved hand rubbing his chin, as if examining the workmanship. Honestly, at this stage of creation it looked like something that his brother Sans would make, but he wasn’t about to say that.

“WELL, I’M IN THE SNOW, AND I AM FRIENDLY. WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE MY FRIEND? I CAN MAKE SNOW PEOPLE WITH YOU, IF YOU WANT. I THINK I’M RATHER GOOD AT IT, ACTUALLY.”

He was also rather egotistical, but he didn’t really realize that.

To be fair, he never really learned on how to really build something in the snow. But as of now, he felt this lump was a good start. It was something rather than nothing at all. Just when he was going to go back to try and pile on more snow, Asriel gave Papyrus his full attention once he spoke.

His eyes widened from his proposal. He actually wanted to be his friend? He’s a prince after all–but..perhaps this skeleton was friends with his father? And he’s the King! So by that then the difference in status isn’t much of a problem here..

No..the biggest thing that’s making him so fidgety is how shy the little one is. After a moment, Asriel finally gave off a small smile as he spoke,

*Y-you’re okay with me being your friend?

His little heart was so full of joy nevertheless, Asriel was so close to crying too, as a matter of fact.

*Yeah! I-I’d really like that. I’ve never made a uh..a snow person before.

"OF COURSE! I’D LOVE TO BE YOUR FRIEND! I DO NOT HAVE VERY MANY FRIENDS, NOT YET. BEING FRIENDS WITH YOU WOULD BE AN ABSOLUTE PLEASURE!”

In an instant, the skeleton his on his knees beside the young prince, already balling up snow in his big red oven mitts. He had already made a snow-Papyrus, so a snow man should certainly be easier. The real fun would happen when the snow man gained consciousness as a monster, just like that other one in the woods.

“...ARE YOU ALRIGHT? YOUR EYES LOOK A BIT... WET. IS IT BECAUSE OF YOUR LACK OF EXPERIENCE IN SNOW-PERSON MAKING? BECAUSE I CAN HELP!”

So Hannah, have you seen a tall skeleton named Papyrus around Snowdin?

“Uh huh… he’s always fiddling with these puzzles around the place. I hide whenever I see him.”

Papyrus smiled wide, which was amazing being that it seemed near-impossible that he could smile any wider than he already was. Generally, he was a very happy skeleton, and that was clear in his grin. His kneecaps give a little creak as he squats down, getting himself at her eye-level.

“YES! THIS IS MY HOUSE! MY BEDROOM IS UPSTAIRS, AND THIS IS THE LIVING ROOM! WOULD YOU LIKE TO WATCH SOME TV? I GET YOU HOT COCO AND SOME FOOD!”

Hannah managed to sit herself up in the cushions, though it was a little difficult with how plush they were. This room was the living room? Where were the cupboards of drinks? The fireplace? The portraits? Did everyone have a different living room?

She snapped out of her confusion when he offered her two of her favourite things. Hot coco and food. “Y-Yes please.” She wasn’t sure what would be on TV down here, but it would be interesting to find out.

He was glad to see this tiny human finally in a place of warmth and comfort- it broke his heart to see something so small and innocent out in the blistering cold wind and ice. Now she could be safe and warm.

The skeleton stands and heads over to the television, turning it on manually and changing the channel to his absolute favorite program- Mettaton’s cooking show. After he is sure that everything is set up, he goes into the kitchen to get cooking.

“DO YOU LIKE SPAGHETTI?”

* Okay, so maybe not sleeping after being awoken by nightmares in the middle of the night was kind of a bad idea. Sans had fallen aleep not long after arriving at his station in Snowdin Forest. It wasn’t like he was a dilligent worker in the first place, but this was world record timing even for him.

* He heard footsteps crunching in the snow, and shortly after a familiar voice yelling something at him, though he couldn’t make it out through his now mostly-asleep haze.

* “five more minutes,” he mumbled.

“SANS!”

“SANS WAKE UP!”

Papyrus, who had been awake since a very early hour that same morning, decided it might be a good idea to check up on his brother’s station. He had honestly been expecting to not see him there, so at first he was pleased, until he realized that Sans was asleep. Unlike the soon-to-be royal guard, the smaller skeleton actually needed sleep to function.

“WHAT IF A HUMAN COMES BY?!”

“I’m willing to guess, for example, that you’ve never encountered a moshpob or a flixet, despite those being the only two exclusively subterranean settlement-forming species known here.”

Perhaps there was a connotation of the word ‘monster’ amongst Sirenni’s people that Papyrus just wasn’t getting. It was probably the same way most humans viewed the word ‘monster’, as something to be feared, or despised. Something that had not a heart nor soul, and felt no emotions other than the thrill of the kill. This was not true. 

“I… CANNOT SAY I KNOW WHAT A FALANA IS, SO I SUPPOSE THE UNDERGROUND IS NOT. WE LIVE UNDER WHERE HUMANS COME FROM- YOU KNOW, PEOPLE WHO AREN’T MONSTERS. I DON’T KNOW WHAT A FLIXET OR A MOSHPOB IS EITHER. HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF A SNOWDRAKE, OR AN ICECAP? THOSE LIVE AROUND WHERE I COME FROM. THEY CAN BE A BIT GRUMPY SOMETIMES, BUT NOT DANGEROUS.”

“… The species my kind knows as ‘humans’ have been extinct on this planet for thousands of years,” Sirenni said, now certain that it was much more plausible for this fellow to be from a different world than not. But was ‘human’ a word like ‘monster’ that meant something different than they expected? “They were furless pink-to-brown bipeds with five fingers per hand, no tail or snout to speak of, with roughly trianglular noses that protruded out of the face? 

“I’m a klaix, but we don’t consider ourselves monsters for being non-human. And I’ve never heard of a Snowdrake or Icecap, so I think you must have wandered in from somewhere else.”

Now Papyrus was way more confused than he was before. Extinct? That wasn’t possible, he had just seen his friend the human leave Snowdin not but two days ago! Humans could not be extinct. It was honestly more plausible that they were from different worlds.

“YES, THAT IS HUMAN! I KNOW ONE PERSONALLY, SO THEY CANNOT BE EXTINCT. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT WE ARE FROM... DIFFERENT PLANETS?”

“AFTER ALL, I DON’T EVEN THINK I’VE EVER HEARD OF A KLAIX. I AM A SKELETON, A SPECIES OF MONSTER.”

Now, the one thing that Papyrus prided himself on, above all other things, was the fact that he was the master spaghetti chef. In reality, his cooking skills were rather debatable, as people never really seem to like his delicacies (though they never tell him that, as not to break his heart), but he liked to think he was the best. Being the best, it is only natural that he understand the boiling of water.

“YOU… DO REALIZE THAT IF YOU STARE AT IT, IT WILL NOT BOIL? YOU’RE A SCIENTIST, I THOUGHT YOU KNEW THAT.”

Papy, dear, that is not science.

Alphys could only sigh in response. Oh, Papyrus. Bless you. Bless you for being ever so slightly dim, but oh so lovable. But, for fear of putting him off as much as a desire to genuinely indulge the big palooka, she climbed back down away from the boiling water.

“Y-yes, Papyrus. Of course, you’re right, silly me. I-I guess I just got so excited for this t-that I went and forgot my science!”

See, he knew what he was talking about. The science of boiling water was his specialty, and even Alphys knew that. Though she saved his little heart for now, someone may just as well send it tumbling down later. That is, of course, if he believed them.

“IT IS ALRIGHT! I FORGET MY SCIENCE SOMETIMES AS WELL! AND I UNDERSTAND THE EXCITEMENT FOR SPAGHETTI, IT IS RATHER AMAZING THAT THESE HUMANS HAVE INVENTED SOME IN A CUP.”

Even with no lungs, Papyrus’ annoyed little growl is still audible. He didn’t have to add great, it was always there! Since birth! He was born for greatness. And here was this mostly-naked skeleton telling him that he wasn’t! Unbelievable.

“MAYBE I HAVE NOT HEARD OF IT BECAUSE IT IS SO INCREDIBLY LAME! JUST LIKE YOU! BUT I COULD MOST CERTAINLY BEAT YOU AT ANY PUZZLE GAME, IF I TRIED!”

“NO! WITHOUT EVEN TRYING!”

      These skeletons seem to be able to do a lot without actual organs. Oshare’s face was even turning a red out of pure frustration. Besides, what does he even have to cover up aside from bones. Secretly, he was insecure enough as is when people say just about anything ‘bad’ about his own outfit.

      Which of course, ultimately leads to this kind of situation. The skeleton pointing angrily at the other and challenging them to a fight.

      “If you’re oh so confident about it then let’s get to it!”

      His four bats fluttered about as two 6x12 holographic screens now appeared in front of them. Now for Oshare it was very simple. He didn’t even bother explaining to the other. The players however must decide where to place incoming groups of variously-colored blobs, or puyo. After placing each set of puyo, any groups of four or more of the same colored adjacent puyo will pop. Any above will fall down and can form more groups for a chain reaction.

Perhaps it was not such a good thing that these two skeletons met. The outwards egotism levels were just a bit too high between the two of them, and this lead to the tense atmosphere, and all this ridiculous shouting. 

Of course, as soon as the game is set up, Papyrus has no idea what he is doing. He stares at the hologram, eye sockets widening, as he attempts to pull himself together and figure this out. He could read books on advanced puzzle design, he could figure this out. ...Right?

“UHH... WHO... GOES FIRST?”

He had been stalking this human for quite some time, waiting for them to hear him, or see him, or attack something, or anything. However, they seemed more… Lost than anything. He almost felt like he should help them.

“EXCUSE ME.”

The skeleton steps over the bush he was crouching behind as if it were nothing. He had to help them find their way, it was infuriating to watch! 

“ARE YOU LOST?”

The human jumps, her eyes widen and she turns quickly, falling backwards, “Oh! I… y.. yes.” She blushes, embarrassed that she fell and looks up at the skeleton. “Please don’t attack.. I don’t want to fight anyone here.” She looks afraid, as she scrambles to get up, “I will just run and keep running it’s a waste of your time. Please.” She tries to hide it, but she’s trembling.

“I’M NOT GOING TO HURT YOU!”

The skeleton seemed almost offended by this accusation. Sure, he was rather imposing, and he had the ability to harm people, of course, but he would never do so. At least, not very much. Especially if she was asking for mercy.

“AND IF YOU RUN AWAY, YOU’LL JUST GET MORE LOST!”

The human looks up, shocked, “What? Really?” She looks back down, “I’ve been attacked all day today…” She stands slowly, “you can tell I’m lost? I must look pitiful then.” She sighs softly, and studies the skeleton, “What’s your name tall stranger?”

It was no mystery why the human had been attacked all day- that SOUL of her’s was very valuable, and rare. In reality, he himself was going to attack her at first, until he saw how badly she was doing. 

“OF COURSE! IT IS OBVIOUS! I AM THE GREAT PAPYRUS, AND WHO MIGHT YOU BE?”

She giggles a little, covering her face with one hand. “Man you’re enthusiastic, I love it! I am the… nervous… Acadia?” She smiles softly and holds out her hand, “it’s nice to meet you Papyrus!”

She loved his enthusiasm? That brought an even bigger smile to his skeletal face than the one that had already been there. For some reason that he did not understand, making her laugh delighted him.

“GOOD DAY, ACADIA!” he said, giving her hand a hearty shake, “IT IS VERY NICE TO MEET YOU AS WELL! SO YOU SAID YOU WERE LOST?”

She nods smiling softly, “I fell, and now I… I have no idea where I am.” She was practically glowing, the skeletons excitement rubbing off on her. This was the last thing she’d expected, when she’d run into the tall and intimidating skeleton. “You’re so sweet I could just hug you!” She grins, her soul starting to glow a bit.

Though he did not know it, that was a pretty typical thing for humans. Well, not common, but typical. The underground was full of confusing puzzles and mazes at every turn. 

“I MUST SAY, I DO GIVE VERY GOOD HUGS!”

He does not notice the glow. Yet.

She giggles and tilts her head a bit, smiling warmly at the skeleton. “Are you the one who’s made all the puzzles around here? I actually love puzzles, it was really fun when they weren’t dangerous. I assume you didn’t have anything to do with the ones before the forest?” She feels fairly certain he had nothing to do with the spikes in the ruins and watches him pose. “You look like a hero, one that would give great hugs, but as we’ve just met I won’t impose.” The green of her soul dimmed a bit as she starts to feel less excited and more comfortable. “It’s so nice to find someone friendly, I really needed something positive, and here you are!”

“I AM INDEED! I MAKE A LOT OF THE PUZZLES, THOUGH NOT ALL OF THEM, SINCE IT’S SORT OF A TRADITION HERE. HAVE TO PUT UP PUZZLES TO KEEP OUT PESTS, HUMANS, THAT SORT OF THING! I SEEM TO BE THE ONLY ONE THAT ENJOYS THEM, THOUGH.”

Happily, the skeleton crouches down so he can be at about her level, as he was rather tall, and opens his arms. His smile is warm, and very inviting. 

“ITS QUITE ALRIGHT, HUMAN! HUGS ARE EVEN MORE POSITIVE THAN WORDS!”

She grins and hugs him tight, giggling as she lightly squeezes him. “You’re so nice, man I needed this.” Her soul is glowing brightly as it heals a bit. “That really lifted my spirits,” she pauses as she looks at him suddenly bashful. “Could I see your puzzles?”

He was focused, but not on her words. This time, he had seen the glow, and instead of hearing her, he heard his own brain’s gears going a hundred miles a minute. What on earth was that?

“HMMM… YES, BUT NOT UNTIL YOU SHOW ME THE GREEN FLASHLIGHT YOU ARE HIDING UNDER YOUR SHIRT!”

“Green flashlight?” She asks patting her shirt, not understanding, “w…what?” She couldn’t see the glow but the little green heart seemed to be fighting to break free, pushing against her chest. “My chest feels heavy,” she mumbles touching it and trying to find the source. She starts to panic and the light of her soul dances with her fear. “W– what if I’m more hurt than I thought?” Her soul reacted to her fear presenting itself for battle and it appears in front of her. Like any human, she screams and touches her chest frantically. The souls escape feels as though someone had pulled a vital piece directly from her core. She had no clue what was happening.

In response to her screams, Papyrus screams back. He has no idea why she is screaming, what was her problem?! What was the matter with her soul popping out, it shouldn’t be that bad! Of course, he didn’t understand that this had not happened to her before, nor did he realize that she could not see it.

“WHAT’S WRONG?! IS IT NOT THE COLOR YOU WANTED?! GREEN IS A VERY NICE COLOR! IT SUITS YOU, REALLY!”

Now thoroughly confused, she looks at the taller skeleton, and pauses to ask, “GREEN?” The dancing lights cease, and the color is a steady glow of a bright color, a sickly yellow-green, the shade of her fear. This pause gives her a moment to realize she isn’t dying or being attacked and so she breathes in a shaky breath. “What do you mean green? Why do I feel so… empty, Papyrus? What’s going on?” There’s genuine fear on the small human’s face, but something in her trusted the skeleton. “I’m going to not scream… but I am afraid.” The yellow tint of the green fades a bit making it more emerald as she finds rationality. Her soul trembled to keep its emerald hue, trying to contain the fear while feeling so… bare.

After taking a moment to calm down, the skeleton gets down on his knees to be on her level. After all, he was rather tall. He was tempted to poke at the soul, but he figured that doing so was a bad idea. It could hurt her, or worse. He didn’t want a human body on his hands. 

“WELL, YOUR SOUL IS OUT. YOU’RE FINE, DON’T WORRY, IT JUST POPPED OUT FOR A BIT. NOTHING TO WORRY ABOUT, ITS ALL FINE! AND ITS GREEN. ITS REALLY NICE, I PROMISE!”

His words comforted her, but only just, “My soul?” Her voice was still shaky as she tries to grasp the concept. She studies the face of the skeleton and smiles slightly, he was genuine, she could feel it. “I.. I see.. is green a good color? Do the colors matter?” The green deepens to a dark full green, like pine trees, that she shines when at ease. She knew she wasn’t in danger and it moves back to her chest. “You’re very kind, my knight in shining armor!” She smiles brightly and pulls him in for another hug. “Well friend, shall we go see those nifty puzzles?”

The skeleton gives her a nod, using his classic skeletal smile to calm her as much as he can.

“GREEN IS A VERY GOOD COLOR! HUMANS HAVE DIFFERENT COLORED SOULS, BUT ALL MONSTERS HAVE WHITE SOULS, SO I DON’T ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT THE COLORS MEAN- OOF!”

Papyrus is surprised, but not upset, when he is pulled into her for another hug. Hugs were always welcome, especially from someone that was as excited as he was about puzzles, and used the word ‘nifty’.

“YES! YES OF COURSE! I HAVE SO MANY!”

"SANS? IS THAT YOU? YOU SEEM... DIFFERENT THAN USUAL."

“Hey, Pap…”

His voice… isn’t entirely right. The way those words come out. The way he’s standing more confidently than your run of the mill Sans. How his stance shifts to subtle aggression. The way he’s eyeing his ‘brother’.

A predatory expression crosses his face, magic slowly beginning to build in preparation.

“How’m I different? I feel the same as ever.”

This didn’t make sense, this didn’t make sense! Why was he acting like this, thinking like this? When has his personality ever annoyed his brother, or anybody, for that matter? And why would he ever want to hurt him, his own sibling, the one he was always trying to protect?

The blow hurt, quite a lot. Papyrus’ vision dims for a moment, but soon refocuses. His HP goes down, but he wasn’t about to attack Sans. Why would he?

“N-NO… I DON’T G-GET IT, SANS… WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS? WE’RE BROTHERS, I DON’T UNDERSTAND WHY YOU WOULD DO THIS! YOU’VE NEVER ACTED THIS WAY BEFORE! I CAN’T FATHOM WHY YOU WOULD WANT TO!”

He waits for the other to steady himself again before dragging Papyrus along the ground by his own soul, his socket blazing red with magic. <???> keeps grinning even as the question comes up – the question, the one he knew he’d hear eventually.

“Why would I do this? Because it’s always more satisfying to take your aggression out on someone who COULD hurt you… but won’t. You’re not even my real brother, you’re just a fraud. My brother’s probably dead.”

So at least <???> is somewhat acknowledging that Judge’s brother is deceased, or at least isn’t in flat-out denial. That’s a refreshing change. “I’ve never acted this way before, because I’m not your brother. I’m hardly even Sans at this point. I’m <???>,” he says, and the words are so alien that they can’t even be processed. “You can call me the Unpronounceable.”

The skeleton slowly lifts Papyrus off the ground, about three feet off. “I’d add something really cheesy here but I’m just gonna jerk you around a little more.” Said as he abruptly throws his ‘brother’ to one side and yanks him to a dizzying stop.

"SANS, WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?! I DON’T UNDERSTAND ANY OF THIS!”

Papyrus is beyond confused, and becoming more than a little bit frantic. This hurt, and even when it wasn’t exactly hurting, it wasn’t comfortable, to say the very least. Everything about this situation made him uncomfortable. The weird color of this not-Sans’ eye, the lack of control, and the words he couldn’t even begin to comprehend. 

Of course, the skeleton did not yet understand the concept of the timelines, the realities, and their splits and rifts. For now, none of this made sense. Was this not-Sans calling him a doppleganger? There was no ‘other Papyrus’, at least not in his mind.

“PLEASE, STOP! YOU’RE HURTING ME! EVEN IF... EVEN IF I’M NOT YOUR PAPYRUS, I’M SOMEONE’S PAPYRUS, RIGHT? CAN’T YOU PUT YOURSELF IN THEIR SHOES?”
