IRIS VAN HERPEN SPRING 2018
By Emir Espinosa
As most of the time Iris Van Herpen, for her Spring 2018 Haute Couture collection, brought out of this world creations down the runway inside the Galerie de Minérologie et de Géologie in Paris.
The title of the collection is “Ludi Nature,” with the first word a cognate of “play” in Latin and the second representing her key inspiration. Van Herpen tries to project the idea of complexity within nature itself, comparing it with the one that technology implies. The designer always brings” out of the box” concepts and represents them in an outstanding ethereal way with her creations.
Even though she has been compared to Alexander Mcqueenin certain ways , the process for the creation of her last collection is unlike most designers, since cutting edge technology, liquid fabrics and 3-D printing are part of it, resulting in undulated shapes, lightness and earthly tones for the collection. The event was also adorned with the presence of artist Marina Abramovic and beautiful visuals and decorations by Dutch sculptor Peter Gentenaar.
Another highlight from the ethereal outfits were the design of the shoes, which served as a combination of a regular lace- up heeled boots with a dramatic addittion of an avant garde design of a platform. Complimenting the looks even more and making models project an impression of an “otherworldly Venus who walks in shoes elevated from their soles”, according to Amy Verner from Vogue.com.
All of this resulting into a more graceful fashion experience in Paris for this year´s spring show from Van Herpen.
