“ well. ” jervis furrows his brow as he reaches into the pocket of his jacket. he knew he put the letter in there somewhere. finally, he feels the corner of the envelope jab into his palm and he pulls it from his jacket and sets it on the table. “ i — already opened it. ” jervis says, pushing it towards jerusha. “ they’re sending me overseas. ”
✎ —- her left hand absentmindedly makes its way over to her stomach, a flurry of thoughts flooding through her mind: what if he didn’t make it? what about the baby -- their baby? how was she supposed to tell him now? telling him would make it all the more difficult. she buries her face into his chest, partially to hide her tears, but also as a gesture of comfort.
❝ how soon? ❞
“ well — i knew that — ”
he stands back up on two legs and takes one of her hands in his. “ i just wanted you to have a good proposal, you know? not something that was the result of me acting impulsively, and somewhere beautiful and MEMORABLE. ”
✎ —- she presses her lips on his, letting that do all the speaking necessary.

He’s PROUD of her. Incredibly, undeniably, proud. The girl standing before him, or rather, the young woman standing before him, has accomplished one of the most amazing tasks a person could do in his eyes: receive a complete education. Not only did she overcome any academic challenges she might’ve face during her time there, but she also somehow overcame any social or financial challenges that may have formed a blockade in her path. Jack had only a small scrap of formal education, so as he gently plucked the program from her hands and prows through it, a toothy grin appears on his face. The guilt gnaws at his gut a little more, but he could attempt to make up for what he’d missed now, right?
“Wasn’t nearly as exciting as THIS. How’d it all go?”
✎ —- the smile on her face wavers for an instant. she doesn’t want to tell him -- doesn’t want to make him feel any guiltier about not being able to be there than he already feels. after all, it’s not like he had a choice -- not like that awful, awful mr. smith, who she had begged to come see her, so she wouldn’t be all alone, & yet, still hadn’t shown. but he had asked, and she didn’t know what to do except tell the truth. eyes flicker down, avoiding his gaze as she mumbles out ❝ no one showed. he didn’t show. ❞

“Jerusha–? Hey. How did, ah, how’d everything go? Y’know, with school?”
The guilt is stirred upon seeing the young woman standing there, as he really DID feel bad about being unable to attend her graduation ceremony. But he had to get back to New York, and Jack didn’t think he could stand being around THAT many rich people for an extended period of time. Not in those circumstances. He could just barely handle galas with Katherine by his side, so to be trapped in a crowd of the wealthy and their snootiness with nowhere to go seemed unbearable. But she had seemed so eager to have him show, and it had pained him to turn her invitation down. He was sure she’d have plenty of people there anyways; she didn’t NEED him there.
✎ —- she pulls out the program from her bag, and hands it to him, beaming with pride -- who would’ve thought that JERUSHA ABBOT, an orphan, would be graduating from one of the finest female schools in the nation, summa cum laude? not her, at least. it had been a dream come true -- one that had been made possible all thanks to daddy long legs. and while he hadn’t gone to see her at graduation, and while she had stuck out like a sore thumb, what was done was done.

it was TRUE. he liked her, he knew that joly and jehan adored her, and even enjolras found her tolerable, which was quite the feat. most of the time, marius wasn’t even sure if enjolras could tolerate him.
“ it will be GREAT ! we can put all of our names in a hat and pick a name out so that we can get our gifts all ready before the dinner ! "
✎ —- she BEAMS. it’s reassuring to know that they all love her, despite the fact that she isn’t a part of the les amis. it’s always reassuring for her, to know that people liked her.

um, wow !! : i started watching nicholas nickleby on a whim this september after my drama teacher mentioned that it was his favourite play. since then, at school, i’ve probably annoyed all my friends by talking about the play and the book! but what i never expected was to start a blog for smike, (again, this blog was created on a whim as well) much less gain over one hundred followers! at first i thought i’d be abandoning my ttgot blog for the sake of smike’s, but quite the opposite happened, really. and now i have over two hundred followers here!
so i’d like to thank everybody who follows me, first and foremost, for liking my portrayal of a poor, abused, sweet guy from yorkshire who is swept up in a real victorian adventure! (it is called the life and adventures of nicholas nickleby after all) thanks for having faith in my portrayal of a boy from a show literally no one has heard of, and a book that almost no one has interest in. most of all, thanks for sticking with me through blog changes, tumblr changes and everything else!

✎ —- graduation has come and gone, and she’s about to depart to LOCK WILLOW for the summer ( forever, maybe ) -- but she has one last stop to make. she hurries off to jack’s selling spot, an extra copy of her graduation programme in her hand. she had invited the newsboy to her ceremony, but had been turned down -- understandably so ;; he WAS the leader of the newsboys, after all. and she had been foolish enough to think that mr. smith would show up. but he didn’t, and she had been all alone -- as always. still, she doesn’t want to dwell on that event anymore ;; after all, she is leaving later that afternoon -- why not leave on a happy note?

“ are you sure? julia has other family here — ” he was going to add his opinion about his beloved niece — but judy knew how he felt about her. jervis didn’t despise julia, per say, but he wasn’t a fan of her. she didn’t do their last name justice in the way he wanted her to — julia was materialistic and snotty and nothing like him or like his brother in law ( his sister was very similar to julia, and it was something he disliked greatly ). he watches her, and feels a sense of dread lingering around him. he had done this, he had caused this heartache and feeling of not being wanted. “ i’ll come talk to you when the ceremony is over, okay? ”
✎ —- master jervie is truly one of the KINDEST souls out there. the lengths to which he’s going to, to make her feel comfortable at her graduation is truly inspiring. how much he cares, how unlike any other pendleton he is is one of her favorite things about him. still, it doesn’t ease her d i s a p p o i n t m e n t that mr. smith didn’t come to be proud of her, or to support her. he knew how much this had meant to her, and yet --- she musters up a smile, and nods.
