born in wales, uk to a single mother and never knew his father. grew up lower class, barely got to see his mom because she was always either working or out drinking and doing drugs. she od'd when chess was 12, and since he had no other family, bounced around between homes until he was 16, when he ran off on his own. did odd jobs, never stayed in one place for too long, slept in any shelter he could find or anywhere hidden. managed to find his way to the u.s. when he was 18 and bounced from shelter to bench to shelter for a year, give or take, before he found a cafe/bakery run by an older man ( silas "lassie" ) in new york who took him in and gave him his forever home in the apartment above the cafe.
