Vitamins is a new essential revelation from For Everest’s forthcoming debut full length, We Are At Home In The Body, and it adds even more confidence to my conviction that this record is going to be a masterfully moving album. Vitamins is somber yet lush. It’s obvious from Vitamins and prior single Autonomy that For Everest has a knack for storytelling. They’re able to aim straight for the heart while igniting much genuine rapport. For Everest’s angst ridden, punk imbued melodic rock is raw and honest. You can pre-order their debut album from Broken World Media before it’s release on July 29th.

Best New Discoveries
This segment features the best new bands and artists we’ve discovered this week. They may not be brand new bands or artists but they are new to She Makes Music nonetheless and we just want to share their amazing music with you!
1. For Everest
The New York group is adept at channeling classic-era emo into something that both celebrates and subverts its forbears and, while they aren’t necessarily breaking any new ground, it’s great to hear this sort of music done so well and with such tight precision when too many bands nowadays are sloppy with the same tools at their disposal. ‘Autonomy,’ the lead single from their upcoming debut full-length We Are At Home In The Body, demonstrates For Everest’s skill at wielding the genre’s cathartic bursts and swells. It perpetuates the drunk-drive-home narrative that has been the locus of many an emo song and subtly twists it, turning that brash notion into a commentary on the struggle of wanting to get out of a soul-sucking relationship with an addict but feeling to guilty to assert your own sense of self. “If the cigarettes don’t cloud your lungs and rot your teeth, and the drugs don’t eat your heart and slur your speech,” Sarah Cowell sings in the hook. “If you make it home tonight without killing anyone else, I hope you find a way to hurt yourself.” The breakdown pivots from that hurt, though, and careens right into a trapped feeling with an appropriately constrained sonic flare: “The engine’s on fire and I’m stuck inside/ I said I was fine, and I lied.” Listen and watch a Joe Kelly-directed video for the track below. 2. Brisa Roche
Born in California, Brisa Roché was raised on the northwest US coast, where she surfed the waves made by an artist mother and adventurer father, before leaving home with her guitar at 16 to spend the glory days of Grunge in Seattle. There she traded her acoustic for an electric and began roughening up her voice of young Joni Mitchell, inspired by the release of PJ Harvey’s Dry. The death of her father inspired Brisa to turn towards the masculine night-life world of jazz. She moved to Paris and plunged into role of bandleader and frontwoman, cutting her teeth and learning to command the stage, putting the vulnerability of her own songwriting temporarily aside, in favor of the vocal freedom possible through jazz. However in 2004, Brisa released a critically acclaimed first record that veered instead towards spacey, cinematic pop. With The Chase, she was ready once again to confront songwriting. Her second album, Takes, is psyche-pop with layers of dreamy Californian vocals and an accessible folk element, including collaborations with Nick Zinner of The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. After several more releases, we are in the present day with her most recent video for the track 'Disco’ which is taken from the EP of the same name, available now. Check it out below.
3. Lucy Neville
Dubbed by Teen Vogue USA as ‘the latest breakout artist’, and handpicked by VEVO as a ‘dscvr’ artist, twenty year-old Australian Lucy Neville is already making her mark with her self-penned electro-pop sound. Her debut EP Lady blends poetic pop with sonic arrangements, a folk sensibility and EDM-inspired hooks. Lady was recorded in Sydney and produced by Marc Malouf, who has previously co-written and co-produced with artists such as Sia and Kylie Minogue. Beginning her music career as a performing member of the Australian Girls Choir, Lucy mastered her harmonies before turning her attention to songwriting. Lucy’s debut EP is a lush glimpse of exciting things on the horizon for this talented and independent young artist. Check out her video for the song 'Damaged Goods’ below.
4. Babygirl
The Canadian duo’s new album will be released later this year but today we’re bringing you the premiere of their lead single 'Overbored,’ accompanied by a charmingly choreographed video directed by Toronto’s David Bedford. A light-hearted dream pop ballad wrapped in chiming guitar and washy melodies, all spiced up with backdrops of lo-fi drums. Kirsten’s vocals are perfectly suited to the song as concerned lyric says “I’m over you, I’m overbored, I’m surrounded by people who were hoping for more”. You can definitely taste that sense of teenage feeling when everyone around you believe you’re wrong and they’re right. “A lot of pressure is put on us to be extraordinary, especially when we’re young and beginning to figure out who we are and what we want. We wanted to write a song that celebrated those who were unsure, uninspired, bored”. [via Going Solo]
I’ve been listening to this song non-stop since yesterday.
For Everest headlines some of the best shows. Do yourself a favor and be here. 8/21
Though Autonomy is my very first encounter with New York’s For Everest, I’m much convinced I need to take time and visit their older music now that I’ve fallen for the song. With several EPs under their belt already, the band now prepare to release their debut full length, We Are At Home In The Body, and I can’t help but gravitate towards their emo flavored alt rock. Autonomy takes me back to my younger years when all I did was lose myself in the angst ridden passion and florid guitar riffs of punk-ish pop rock. The imagery in the music video for Autonomy matches the song’s raw, honest power. We Are At Home In The Body will be out on July 29th via Broken World Media. Pre-order from their website, here.
