silence at the end of a phone call is a three word sentence
I don't know what is more painful
for you to not want me
at all, after all
or for you to want me
and it making no difference
whatsoever
on watching a parent age
i saw somebody say “what if you’re gone and i haven’t become anything yet” and basically that broke me on a random thursday evening
From the book Cut these words into my stone: ancient Greek epitaphs (Wolfe, Michael)
Why does grief bruise our lungs so?
you deleted my software as you went
so how could I breathe
how could I remember to eat
when my tears washed away the last traces of
connection between my body and I
I remember, I must remember
times before when I was alone
happy, breathing, eating, laughing
functioning
I remember but I do not know
how
do I call a doctor or an engineer or god herself
to fix what you left behind
you exist like a bruise under my skin something tender i can't help but skim my shaky fingertips across, pressing softly like a kiss just to feel a hint of pain i've managed to convince myself tastes sweet the way red wine does when i'm dressed pretty and sitting just out of reach from you
my heart for you
burns not in the embers of passion
I don't wish for your heart like a possession
for our two souls needn't be one to ring true
my heart for you simply
beats a melancholy prayer;
that we walk on adjacent paths
and at the end of this
you will be waiting
also a poem from the new, unreleased collection. very possibly my own all-time favourite.
first thought is a passer-by
second nostalgia
third perhaps rain during an old anniversary
fourth a grace quietly allowed to the mentally ill
fifht? sixth seventh eighth
ninth a transgression
tenth not a thought but desire
a crime committed inside the mind is nothing
in court of law but in love?
a death sentence
only the thing dying won't be me
I love you echoes
from the wall and
your turned back
the only thing
missing is
too

regret smells like a
dusty wool jacket
drenched in cigarette smoke
regret sounds like laughter
at the back of a classroom
a joke you can't understand
regret looks like an instagram story
few seconds of video
a wool jacket on someone else's
shoulders
I say you were bothered. Traumatized. Too deep in your problems to think straight. I say it was bad timing. Bad luck. I say I was too clingy, too lonely, too excited, too nervous. Too much. If we had time to calm down, sit down, see each other, we would have been fine. We would have been. I say it was the circumstances, the people around us, the time, the place.
It was not simply that you did not
love me.
Butterflies Between Us
You lean in and kiss me
that kiss fluttered like with deep blue wings.
Feeling the wingstrokes on my cheek I lean in and kiss you
embracing the wind coming for me, coming for us. I lean in but you won't let me.
Rejection and Salvation are sometimes the same.
You lean in but I stop you. You are not ready for me, for my heart
sometimes butterflies are not strong enough
to start hurricanes
no matter how much winter loves the little flower
it's embrace will always smother all colours in the end
and no matter how much the flower loves the ethereal winter
it will always die come first snow
I understand now
so I let you go
after one girl and two boys
all those years past
I wonder if you will be the last
my poems are about
I can't imagine a future
where it's anyone but you
but life comes at us fast, baby
and forever is taboo
to me out there reading this years from now
I hope you remember, I hope you know
my heart is here, where are you?
Reading of a Will
I asked the rain clouds if they could kiss you on my stead
each droplet on your cheek a match
for each wish my lips had
to meet your skin
I asked the sun if she could kiss you on my stead
caress your face with warmth
so that no matter how far you strayed
my memory would linger in the light
