Could CBD Fight Superbugs? Marijuana Compound Shows Promise As an Antibiotic.

As scientists work to stem the tide of antibiotic resistance, the authors of a study believe an ingredient in cannabis could one day form the basis of a new drug.

Cannabidiol, or CBD, already being researched and used for anxiety, insomnia, epilepsy and pain, maybe the next superbug fighter for resistant infections, the study suggests.

Researchers found CBD “had a similar potency to established antibiotics such as vancomycin and daptomycin, and did not lose effectiveness after extended treatment.”

Dr. Mark Blaskovich, one of the researchers from the Institute for Molecular Bioscience at the University of Queensland said that the studies showed CBD worked “in vivo” or in animal models, as a topical treatment or possibly on bacteria on the skin before surgery.

Unlike some bacteria that have become increasingly resistant to antibiotics, the researchers found that CBD did not lose effectiveness over time.

The study was conducted in collaboration with Botanix Pharmaceuticals Ltd., a drug-discovery company that’s investigating uses of synthetic cannabidiol for a range of skin conditions. The company also helped fund the study.
