My biggest flaw?
â my father had promised me this would be a meeting of importanceâ balti snorted, less than amused with what had happened so far. â from where iâm sitting, this is just turning out to be a complete waste of my timeâÂ
âwhy donât you get up and leave, then?,â wondered alice. while she understood where he was coming from, annoyance still laced her voice, as she was trying to remain patient herself. âthis wonât fare any better if people start acting the way you are.â
âAnd I said âIâm not your personal assistant, file your own paperworkâ. They werenât very pleased with me but Iâd had enough being pushed around.â
âAs long as it didnât cost you your job, good for you. I guess?,â said Alice in response, looking at the other with a hint of admiration. âNo one should be pushed around, âfter all.â
âParchment prices up again?,â muttered Alice, a sigh slipping past her lips. She was making more money than she was used to now that she was a fully fledged Auror, but she was still as easily stressed by economic problems as she had been when she was younger. Growing up poor left its traces, even when you were steadily becoming part of the middle class, and Alice couldnât help but feel agitated. âThis is ridiculous.â
ofgoldensnakes:
âRight, obviously. I know what that is.â Narcissaâs reply came out rushed, her pretty features marred by a frown. For a moment she wondered whether Lucius or Bella would ever be chased by the woman in front of her, but soon dispelled such thoughts. âWhy are you doing so much paperwork and  not catching said wizards?â
âIsnât that obvious?,â wondered Alice aloud, raising her eyebrows at the other. To her -- a perhaps neurotically organised person -- paperwork was nothing but logical. âThe whole system would fall apart if we didnât document the wizards we caught and the process weâre making on cases. Itâd just be ... well, anarchy .. disorganised and unreliable without these files.â She paused. âDonât you worry; Iâll be back in the field sooner than later.â
ofgoldensnakes:
Narcissa could hardly imagine it herself, not when the most stressful part of her day was deciding between which cream drapes would look better. ( unless Lucius was called away, sheâs always worry then ) âCriminals?â This caught her attention as she raised a brow, âWhat exactly is it that you do?â
Alice was a bit surprised at her reaction ; she had assumed it would be clear that sheâd be something like an Auror or a Hit Witch, but perhaps that had been arrogant of her ( which would hardly be the first time ). âIâm an Auror. Bad wizard-catcher, that kind of thing.â

â pssst, iâm sure itâs not that bad ! â the ex-slytherin insisted, waving her hand nonchalantly. she couldnât complain about having to do paperwork, for she loved every bit of her job. besides, when you thought about it, everything was paperwork, wasnât it ? â youâre right, it is dreadful â she exclaimed, in an attempt to to sympathize. it was, after all, one of the keys of persuasion: the public was more likely to agree with a speaker if they saw themselves reflected or related in any way. â if you donât mind me sayinâ, it looks like youâve been working very hard â too hard. how about we get ourselves some chamomille tea ? or, if you want something that kicks in quicker, some firewhiskey â â rita giggled, sending a fake, obviously playful wink â â iâm pulling your leg. the first offer still stands. â
âoh, i wouldnât call it dreadful. âtis just less exciting than the rest of work, but itâs not too bad,â said alice, shrugging her shoulders slightly. she didnât like most journalists; they were sneaky and clever and wanted to know things that they oughtnât. besides, alice was not too good at the dance they tried to play, with their charm and ways to get quotes out of people. she was blunt and upfront, not made to be clever and charming like them. and so naturally, she felt sceptical of ritaâs intentions. refuse her, however, she did not: alice could use a bit of a break and didnât want to dismiss the other based on her prejudice towards journalists. maybe the other wanted to know things that the public should know -- which alice would gladly share. and if the information the prophet wanted was confidential, itâd be good to know that they were after it. âchamomile tea does sound like a brilliant idea,â she said, her voice a bit warmer than it had been before. starting to put her files in one stack, she gestured at the seat across her. âcome, sit.â

â Not asking any cases, donât worry-â Daniel promised with a nod. â Yeah, ut my part is more on the practical slide and I get a paper that I just need to sign. Paperwork doesnât really come my way often.â
âGood,â she said, hand still on the files. âThat sounds like a lot less hassle. I totally understand why paperwork is needed for Aurors and like I said, I donât mind it, but it does take up a lot of time that we could use otherwise.â

it probably would help lily to talk about it, maybe cry a little in the comfort of her own home, but she felt it somewhat unfair to unload it all on alice. her own job must be hard enough. what she must she in the field as an auror must be nothing compared to the hospital. â thank you for the offer, â she offered the woman a warm smile, â but it might help me more to get me mind off it. talk about something else. â
she took a sip of her now lukewarm tea, placing it back down with her nose upturned. in her opinion tea was better served pipping hot. not hot enough to burn her mouth, but enough to warm her throat. â how are things with you ? good, i hope ! â
alice was not usually good at talking emotions; she compartmentalised herself, handled her feelings stoically and practically and when others did not and let them out ( which was, admittedly ) healthier, she often found herself at a loss for words. this didnât keep her from wanting to hear her friends out, though, but when lily said sheâd rather talk about something else, she couldnât help but feel a bit relieved. trying to offer comfort often left alice feeling incompetent, and that she hated. âof course.â
a shrug was her initial reply to lilyâs question, but she soon followed it with a more optimistic, âiâve been good, i suppose. busy and all that, trying to just keep my head up and all, but as good as i can be. and you? apart from work, that is?â
ofgoldensnakes:
âGood, litter would really ruin the ambience of this place.â The sarcasm was obvious as she glanced around the dreary pub, her nose wrinkling ever so slightly. Narcissa simply nodded her head in reply, âWhat could you possibly be doing that would require you to murder half a forest anyway?â
Alice rolled her eyes slightly at the othersâ sarcastic comment but didnât reply to it; she hardly felt like defending the Leaky Cauldron, after all. The place was cluttery, and while Alice usually preferred organised places, she liked that about the pub. âOh, Iâm just doing my job. Paperwork is simply part of it. If people could stop being criminals, itâd save a lot of forests.â
mavdonalds:
âi know i am, letâs not lie.â she continued, her expression playful. she was just messing around, happy to do so if it meant making the other smile. âiâm high on everyoneâs list, letâs not kid ourselves, iâm just the favourite to everyone.â it was easy to joke with alice, easy for mary to do it. âbrilliant, i need more training so i thought iâd come to the best witch i know.â
ânow now, donât get cocky. could bite you in the arse someday, yâknow,â said alice, chuckling softly. âbut i do think thatâs kinda true; who would not have you high on their list? just look at those dimples, who could not like that?â alice laughed, pinching maryâs cheek as if she was a kid. âoh, donât feed into my ego now; itâs big enough as it is.â
ofgoldensnakes:
Narcissa was not a regular to the Leaky Cauldron by any means, but she had promised to meet an old school friend there so they could go to Diagon Alley together. Yet here she still sat, half an hour later and nursing a butterbeer, with no sign of said friend. Sheâd been on her way out in a huff when someone had called to her, pale eyebrows rising to the ceiling at the question. âDo you often through your rubbish on the floor?â The woman questioned in a cool tone, hesitating before she bent to pick them up, placing them in a neat pile on the others table.
âNo, I happen to think littering is a very shitty thing to do,â said Alice, shrugging mildly. She reached out for the files -- she had to admire the neatness of the pile for a small moment -- and put them on top of some others. âI do sometimes drop some other things; am only human, after all.â Eyes went over her desk for a moment, Alice still annoyed with the chaos sheâd created. âThanks, though. For handing them to me.â
ofevcns:
guilt flooded through her at the sound of a familiar voice, not wanting to come across rude to someone she considered a friend. it certainly hadnât been anything personal. the former gryffindor had been expecting to see a stranger, someone who had maybe had too much to drink and was trying their luck.Â
â merlin, alice, iâm so sorry. â lily finally glanced up, her smile not quite reaching her eyes. the day had been too draining. â please, sit. â the words were accompanied by a dainty hand gesturing towards the empty seat.
hers was definitely a loaded question and lily didnât want to offload all her troubles onto alice. it wasnât fair on the woman. â yeah, iâm fine. i promise. justâŠ.a long day at work, thatâs all. â
Alice waved off the apology; she hardly minded at all, understood where Lily was coming from. While she usually thrived of off conversation and interaction, she needed her moments alone, too, and when someone intruded those she could get ( more than ) defensive.
âDonât even worry about it,â she said, giving the other a reassuring smile and sitting down across of her. Eyes darted around for a moment -- a habit she had picked over the years -- before meeting Lilyâs green ones again.Â
A frown creased her forehead. âI get it,â she said, truthfully. Perhaps working as a Healer or an Auror in times of war was just asking for trouble. Not that it wasnât worth it. âWant to talk about it? Get it out of your system?â
dcaniel:
â anything fun?â Daniel teased as he slid in the seat in front of the other- his eyes falling to the papers he earlier picked up for Alice and handed them to her, a pure almost hurtful smile onto his lips as he placed them on the table. â I mean, paperwork was never my thing butâŠâ
âAs far as paperwork goes, this is pretty thrilling. But then, I do kind of like paperwork, so that doesnât say much. Itâs all confidential, though,â said Alice, putting the files back in the folder and patting it slightly. âYou work at the Ministry too, right?â
ofskeeterisms:
the leaky cauldron was among ritaâs favorite places. not because of its impeccable hygiene, nor its remarkable service, but because of the plethora of characters one would come across in the establishment. interesting would be the word to call the mixture of figures, both blood purists and rebels. it wasnât a place of high importance, but shall any conflict were to be stirred, she wanted to be in the room where it happened, and this could be it.Â
rita hurried towards the desk where the woman sat, actually wanting to lend a hand. â sure thing, â she smiled, bending over and incredibly discretely, eyeing the pages and their content as she gathered them ( who knew, perhaps they could be housing a much too JUICY secret. ) however, she was sure that shall she continued to stare, sheâd give her goal away. â there, â she said in a giggle-like way, placing the pages on the table. â whatcha workinâ on ? â
She knew she ought to be more careful. Alice usually placed charms on her paperwork that disallowed strangers to read them when she was working in public, but she was more sloppy than usual that day. She didnât wonder why; there was a plethora of reasons and she didnât want to waste time picking one of them. Still, she couldnât help but be more than annoyed with her own sloppiness, especially when anyone could peek over her shoulder here.
âCheers,â she said, recognising the other as Rita Skeeter. A polite smile curled her lips, but that was all she gave her, Alice tired and focused and far from looking for pleasantries. She was sure Frank would talk her into relaxing soon and she wanted to take any minute she would work a little more she could get. âJust some paperwork; âtis hardly interesting. Probably the most boring part of any job.â Which Alice hardly agreed with: she found paperwork -- unlike some of her colleagues -- a soothing thing to do, but she wasnât going to share that quirk with just anyone.
