i have just stumbled upon the most beautiful public document i have ever laid eyes on. this also goes for anyone whose pastimes include any sort of character creation. may i present, the HOLY GRAIL:

this wonderful 88-page piece has step by step breakdowns of how names work in different cultures! i needed to know how to name a Muslim character it has already helped me SO MUCH and i’ve known about it for all of 15 minutes!! i am thoroughly amazed and i just needed to share with you guys

There are many fun reasons to have a character avoid using guns, but I think "this otherwise-awesome fighter is a really terrible shot" is an underappreciated one. Yes, they're available in my setting and would work against my enemies. No, I don't have a moral code against them or a power that makes them redundant. I just can't aim for shit!

In general IMO the more badass and hypercompetent a character is, the more they're enriched by having one skill they're just absolutely hopeless at. Terrible shot, terrible liar, terrible dancer, no poker face, no sense of direction, can't drive, can't swim, can't cook, can't read, always broke, always late, always falls for a certain trick...

Ellipsus makes it easy for anyone to write together.

I think more fantasy fiction should use curse tablets. They were often made out of lead but you could also make them out of gold, wood, or clay.

The basic idea behind an Ancient Greek or Roman curse tablet is that you buy the tablet from a holy spot like a temple or spring and then you write a message to the god of that location asking them to curse someone.

Curse tablets could be hung on temple walls, thrown in holy springs or lakes, or tied to trees.

You could have rivers or lakes glittering with golden curse tablets, metal or wooden curse tablets swaying in the breeze in a sacred grove and bumping into each other like wind chimes, a giant bulletin board on the side of a temple covered in curse tablets that essentially becomes a petty anonymous callout board.

If gods are characters in your world you could show them invisibly or otherwise going through their curse requests. Fishing them out of their river, reading the message board, etc.

You can also go with prayer tablets or paper or ribbon prayer notes like what people post at Shinto or Buddhist shrines but those are too sweet and nice. Curse tablets can cause drama. Hatred. Curse the bitch who stole your towel at the sacred baths. Just like the ancients used to do.

Actually, I really like this idea as why elven and dwarven crafts are so good. Something that’s merely acceptable is meant to last most of one of their lifetimes. So even a mediocre dwarven craftsman will make something a human can pass down.

And you can always sell what the apprentice makes while still learning to a human, letting them know it will merely last for the rest of their life.

The elven version of IKEA could be a human family heirloom.

alright everyone is being sassy but nobody has brought up the actual reason why scientists are interested in the titanic in the notes

Per wikipedia:

The Titanic was made of steel, presumably to resist corrosion (i mean. thats why boats are made of steel i assume) but even when iron/steel rusts people did not expect to find like. decomposition. bacteria are EATING the titanic.

and there's wood furniture from the titanic that isn't decaying. hell, there are wood ships at the bottom of the ocean that archaeologists study. so the expectation people have for the titanic is not that the steel would decompose at the bottom of the ocean. Even in 100 years, since there are much more ancient preserved wooden ships iirc.

(im not particularly knowledgeable about ships, i just had heard about the science going on around the titanic so i wanted to clarify that on this post for people)

The Titanic is an exceptionally weird whalefall basically.

Not a marine biologist but biologist enough to weigh in on this. The reason we have iron eating bacteria but not wood eating bacteria at the bottom of the ocean is simple. Hydrothermal vents release a cocktail of different mineral ores into the ocean. And bacteria and other organisms evolved alongside those so they evolved to digest these, like iron or other metal ores

Wood however does not exist at the bottom of the ocean since it basically never sinks down, even when logs are flushed out into the ocean they basically never end up at the ocean floor. So there's no bacteria that evolved to decompose lignin, which is already complex enough to decompose on the surface. And that's why wooden ships or the furniture on the Titanic stay intact for hundreds of years or longer.

Okay, but I remember reading a magazine stating that the titanic would basically be gone by now because of the rust eating the ship.

The sister ship HMHS Britannic is still perfectly preserved because of the way it sank, and partly in due to the coral that has grown around it keeping the structure in tact I believe was the reason.

I already know I'm in the minority for this one but shoutout to writers who absolutely were not able to write a lot of words consecutively when they were teens or tweens. Shoutout to writers who needed to learn how to reliably apply words to the ideas in their heads and needed a lot of time to do it

OK. No. Seriously though. I'm only thinking about the Cityverse folks here because Brett and Noah from the Novemberverse live undeservedly charmed lives.

Aria was violently abused throughout her childhood, by her parents and her brother, and shortly after she managed to escape from her family, her best friend was killed in front of her and she ended up in prison, where spent a decade being used for medical experimentation.

Rafe's parents died in prison when he was really young and he ended up in residential care, where he was abused in just about every way a child in residential care can be. When he got away, he joined a criminal gang where the same kind of shit happened, but worse, and the only way he could do an alternative kind of work was to get really good at murdering people instead.

Gillen's slum-dwelling, violent alcoholic, gambling addict father (probably) murdered his mother, then turned his violence on Gillen. The shit really hit the fan with he attacked Gillen with a metal bar and wrecked his back. Gillen couldn't go to a regular medical centre or they'd have put him in residential care. Instead, he went to a ciminal gang who paid for surgery, but then he owed them. His story after that was very similar to Rafe's. It was an extremely fucked up thing that they bonded over.

Because of the settings of the stories (crime gangs, corrupt military police, prison), pretty much all the side characters go through some properly hellish shit too. There's a lot of abuse, exploitation, violence, trafficking, loss etc. No-one's having a good time tbh.

I'm actually back to ALL OF THEM as the answer to this question 🤣
