In response to this ask I got earlier today, I decided to do a quick deep-dive into my research materials about divining with playing cards vs tarot cards. Here's the research I found in Old Tradition Crafte, translated by Robin Artissan (2005):
"Meanings may be assigned to a pack of playing cards, to be spread out and read as omens so a situation may be given clarity and direction as well as understanding." This style of reading is claimed to have been used by witches in the 18th-late 19th century, according to Old Tradition Crafte translated by Robin Artissan (2005). According to Artissan, "It has been taken from those who practice the North Berwick Style of Crafte, but is not old enough to be the original system. The cards used in this system are ordinary playing cards. There is no mention of Tarot cards in this system."

I hope you enjoyed this post. And it was atleast a little helpful to you.
Slavic paganism is objectively a very hard (some would say impossible) religion to reconstruct or revive. There’s not much surviving data and contemporary sources mentioning practices of ancient Slavs are few (so few that they were fit into a single book „Sources of Slavic Pre-Christian Religion” by Juan Antonio Álvarez-Pedrosa), far between and typically heavily biased against them. We do possess significant amount of archeological data, which however proves itself notoriously hard to interpret. Luckily we also have access to centuries of records about Slavic folk customs. While chronological distance between ancient Slavic pagans and modern Slavs described in those ethnographic sources can be quite large the living traditions of Slavic culture prove very useful in completing fragmentary ancient data.
”Using folkloristic sources may be helpful in creating a possible context for archeological findings. If used critically, they can sophisticate and nuance our interpretations. In the context of Slavic culture, using east Slavic folklore sources seems to be exceptionally valuable, as they are still relatively undiscovered and understudied. Another argument is that the Eastern Slavs were under the influence of the Orthodox church, which had a different (more liberal) impact on their folk culture than Catholicism in the area of Poland.”
- Sacrifices among the Slavs: Between Archeological Evidence and 19th Century Folklore by Izabella Wenska
This is equally true for study of the specific aspect of Slavic paganism that are offerings. Information provided below comes from a mix of medieval sources contemporary to the last Slavic pagans, archeological discoveries and folk customs. I would like to disclaim that this blog post is by no means an exhaustive explanation of Slavic practices of offering and sacrifice. Nonetheless I do hope that it will provide the readers with some new knowledge and inspiration.
Lavender makes me sick. It doesn't calm me or anything. It makes me nauseous and dizzy and stuff. Lavender absolutely will not work for me in any sort of sleep or happiness or calming spell because of my bias and reaction to it.
You have to personalize the lists for them to work for you. Some plants/items have set correspondences because they've been used that way for years and it's common belief. If you share that same belief it will work.
Why is this? Because regardless of how much intent and will you use when charging something, if your true feelings about an item is conflicted with that, it will come out and it won't charge. Your biases and emotions are stronger than what you try to emulate. And that's ok! How you see something is your own little twist on it. It personalizes your craft and spells. It makes spells more likely to work for you and less likely to work for others. It protects and strengthens your craft.
Almost every correspondence list and source you find will be biased and personalized. I am constantly revising mine and as I do, my spells get stronger and better.
When you’ve covered all the basics, the next step is to pick some topics and study them in-depth. Take notes, whether they are online or by hand, and find creative ways to incorporate what you’ve learned into your practice. With depth of knowledge comes depth of understanding, and that will make you a stronger witch. Here are some ideas/topics to get started:
Mesopotamian magic (especially the role of astrology in Mesopotamia)
Go through each of the Sabbats and write down a summary of how they came about. What is their history, purpose and associated mythology?
Hermeticism and its influence on Western magic
The first recorded spells and incantations (hint: they were in ancient Sumer)
Who was Zoroaster?
John Dee and Enochian magic
Freemasonry
The Golden Dawn
The Salem Witch Trials, and how they affected legislation on, and public perception of, witchcraft
Carl Gustav Jung and his work on the connections between psychology and alchemy
Crystal elixirs
Shadow work
Mythology from a variety of cultures - you’re probably familiar with Zeus and Ra, but how much do you know about Ranginui and Papatuanuku? Knowing a variety of mythologies, whether you follow them or not, can help you better understand the deities you work with.
Other religions! It’s the same as mythologies - the more you know, the better.
Buddhist philosophy
Reiki
The fae
Botany - if you can, try to research the plants in your region, and devise correspondences for plants you can find in your local area based on their physical or medicinal properties. Just make sure to be mindful of local/native cultures if there are any.
Make a dream journal, and write down whatever you can remember about your dreams (don’t worry if it’s hard at first, the more you write them down the better you’ll get at remembering). Research possible dream meanings of any dreams that stand out to you!
Astrology, if you’re not already familiar with it. Astrology originated in ancient Mesopotamia as one of the first forms of divination, and as a result is the basis of a lot of magic today.
The natural world. The metaphysical is important but perhaps more so is the world to which it is attached. I’d recommend watching nature documentaries for this one.
Cover all your bases. If there’s a witchcraft 101 area that you never fully learned, now’s the time. Things like grounding, centering, circle casting, meditation, warding, visualisation… these are all important foundations that you need before you can try to build on your knowledge.
I made my first cheesecake today and decided to share the recipe! I am not a kitchen witch, but I've been making a lot more food lately and I'm getting into it, so who knows (:

Melt the butter, crush the biscuits and make a base for the cake
Juice the lemon and mix this with the cream cheese, condensed milk and vanilla extract
Wisk until it forms a loose paste and add to the base
Grate the lemon peel and add it to the top of the cake, along with your flowers for decoration
Place it in the refrigerator for 3 hours and serve

Extra Notes
This is a vegetarian recipe, therefore the cake will be a bit flimsy and should rather be served as a dessert or in seperate bowls.
If you don't mind gelatine, you can add that for more firmness. There is also vegan gelatine available, but I did not have access to it.
Don't be scared to tweak the recipe! If you prefer it sweeter, add more condensed milk and if you prefer it more sour, add more lemon.
I mostly eat according to a vegan diet, but every now and then I go vegetarian, especially when it comes to cake. If you are 100% vegan, I'm sure there are other recipes online for you to use.
BETTER SHIT TO PUT IN YOUR GRIMOIRES THAN THE BASIC SHIT EVERYONE SAYS:
Maps! Maps! MAPS! If you're a death witch, get one for the cemeteries you visit and mark gravestones/areas you've practiced in! Garden witches! Map out your gardens! Green witches! Map where you find specific herbs in your area! Lunar witches! Mark the best spots to go look at the sky! Make a key! Take notes!
Recipes for COMPONENTS! Write down how to make the mixtures you use in spells often- A special salt mixed with herbs and put under the moon, a mixture of oils for protection, the herb mixes sachets you keep making to add to sachets, whatever!
For green witches- press samples of stuff and glue them in! Go to an arboretum and ask for permission to take leaves to press, they'll usually let you take some- add them in with your notes about trees
Cool ways to make spells! I make spells in envelopes and on empty spools, what are some ways you do?
The local plants in your area and what they do. You're not going to be likely to find chrysanthemums to forage in Missouri, but you will find creeping charlie and prairie plants. What can you do with a thistle?
When you celebrate a sabbat, write down what you did and include samples! Ribbons from your Beltane altar, a pressed sample of your lemmas harvest, a scrap of your Yule decorations. Maybe do a spell and tape the remnants into your grimoire in a plastic baggie
Learn how to make an envelope out of paper just by folding it, how to string seeds, how to dry plants, how to macrame rocks and hang them from your window. Find those little witchy skills and write them down.
How to incorporate your hobby into your magic. Sigiling origami paper, weaving knot magick into your crochet, making blessed bookmarks, etc
Substitutes! Rosemary, rose and clear quartz are good for most things, but there are more substitutes to be used that are more powerful. Roanoke bells are good substitutes for bluebells, apparently.
Correspondences of odd things. Turns out different kinds of cats have different correspondences, huh.
Superstitions and such from where you're from.
For kitchen witches: easy to alter recipes. An egg noodle recipe that takes herbs really well, a simple bread recipe that can be dressed up for spells or rituals, how to make a good pie crust that you can sprinkle nutmeg in or whatever you desire.
Or: What foods go good with what herbs. You'll make a better apple pie (and get the benefits of apples, nutmeg, and cinnamon together!) If you know how your herbs taste together with your cooking. (Most kitchen witches know this stuff, but for a green witch who likes to make teas or a sea witch that likes to make soup, etc, this is important)
Take your favorite locket and fill it with wax from your favorite scented candle, not only does it look cool but it smells great to boost your mood and whatever you use that candle to boost too.
Here are some simple ideas to get your feet wet in areas of death witchcraft. This isn’t intended to be a Death Witchcraft 101 list, but more for general persons who are interested to incorporate some simple exploration.
Grave-tending or exploration: find a nearby graveyard and walk it, respectfully looking at the tombstones and picking up debris or clearing weeds. You can include offerings if it strikes you, but the acknowledgement of the cemetery itself and cleaning of it is truly an offering in itself.
Create an ancestor/relatives shrine: in this day and age I know many don’t necessarily have a bunch of deceased relatives they’re comfortable with inviting communication with. Feel free to choose ancestors that resonate with you by researching their life. Personal heroes, local heroes, and heroes of a cause personal to you are particularly good ones to go for. Create a simple space for them with items or pictures that make you think of them. You can also include things you associate with the cycle of life and death (animal and plant remains, statues or figurines relating to death, skull and afterlife art, etc.) You can either try to hone your spirit communication by communicating directly with the ancestors of the shrine, or if that is uncomfortable; just leave offerings and letters without opening yourself to spirits directly. Either is perfectly acceptable for death witchcraft- spirit working is not a prerequisite.
Volunteer for or research death related industries: hospice, hospitals, assisted living, death doulas, morticians, forensic sciences, end of life planning, etc. Confronting death in a direct way like this is important to being sincere in your exploration of death and related practice.
Preserve and dry your own herbs and plants: a simple way to experience decay and death in your own home and also something useful in your practice in other ways. Be aware of any danger to pets and children; don’t place toxic plants in their reach while they are drying. Store in jars or sealed containers once completely dried. Mark with their jarred date so you can know when they’ve expired (especially if for internal or topical uses).
Crafts relating to afterlife: crafts made of bones and remains, photography of abandoned or decaying locations, paintings of afterlife related images, headstone rubbings or memento mori journals, stories and poetry relating to death and the beyond. Even just recycling objects and clothes into something new is an extension of the cycle of life and death!
Some find artistically expressing their exploration of death particularly cathartic, but it can be intense. Don’t feel ashamed if you start a project and have to step back. Stay safe mentally, emotionally, and physically in your death exploration!
Vulture Culture: a particularly hands on way to explore death and its cycle. You can keep it simple and just deal with cleaned pieces you purchase/obtain and honor. If you do feel called to explore the collection and preservation of remains from start to finish, make sure you research methods and supplies beforehand. You will need a well ventilated “vulturing spot” for things like rot pots or a maceration tubs.
Low Spoon/Subtle ideas:
Visit a Natural History or art museum and just wander and explore peacefully. Feel free to bring non-witchy friends and family! You don’t have to say why you’re specifically picking this kind of museum.
Watch TV shows relating to forensics and academic death work. Or you can even ease into it by watching fictional shows as well, just take the process with a grain of salt 😉
Read myths and cultural practices that are related to the cycle of life and death.
Browse through articles or a blog like this one: http://www.thepostmortempost.com that examines aspects of death in an academic sense
All my death witch followers and friends are welcomed to add additional thoughts and ideas in reblogs!
For those of you who don’t know me, I suffer from a chronic illness and I spend a LOT of time bedridden. I also happen to be a witch! I don’t let being trapped in bed stop me from practicing my craft. Here are some resources I’ve compiled from my personal experiences and the help of others <3

ARE YOU BROKE BUT STILL WANNA PULL THE THREADS OF THE ETHER AND DEFY THE ESTABLISHED LAWS OF MAN INVOKING THE ANCIENT MAGICK?
GOOD.
You and I are gonna go S H O P P I N G
But, Semiramis! I just told you I’m broke! I can’t get nice things!
*smack*
WRONG.
The world is full of wonders, one of them being
DOLLAR STORES
Remember sweeties, a witch’s best friend is scavenging.
Open your eyes. Look around. Scout your neighborhood.
But what about the things that I can’t get out on the streets!?
That’s what we’re shopping for!
Now before we move on, close your eyes… then open them again because you need to read the rest of the message… and repeat the following mantra:
THE CRAFT REQUIRES NOTHING.
THE CRAFT REQUIRES NOTHING.
THE CRAFT REQUIRES NOTHING BUT MYSELF.
No fancy ingredients, no pretty crystals, no expensive incenses will work better than your RAW HEART AND SOUL.
Mkay?
Now let’s go get some of that good shit.
How good?
Diz gud.
Now, it’s no mystery that a broke ass witch needs to pay a visit to the local dollar stores to get her materials every once in a while, but if you’re like me and live in a place where there are no dollar stores (and there are no dollars either) WHERE TO GO?
The answer is here:
CHINESE IMPORT STORES ARE YOUR NEW SANCTUARY.
These places are AWESOME for a witch on a budget, because they carry EVERYTHING. From toys to art supplies to kitchenware…
AND SPIRITUALITY SUPPLIES.
(That’s where we come in)
Speaking of budget, by the way. Let’s set one.
Say… $15?
FIFTEEN AMERICAN DOLLARS. I will take you home with some nice and rare goodies that will spice up your spells.
Let’s go in.
Oooh what a promising start. This here, my friends, are 25 grams of the purest coke Palo Santo wood. Don’t like it in its natural state?
They have it in incense too!
But we ain’t getting that shit. I’m allergic so I can’t burn anything scented or else I… die.
But know they’re there, as well as essential oils, and they’re quite accessi-
WHAT!?
28 BUCKS FOR A BOTTLE OF ESSENTIAL OIL!?
AIN’T NOBODY GOT CASH FO DAT
Nah I’m just kidding. This is the price in pesos, meaning that these oils are *math happens* $1.55 each!
What a D E A L
BUT THAT’S NOT WHAT WE’RE HERE FOR BECAUSE I’M SOON TEACHING YOU HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN OILS.
Also, holy shit…
You HAVE to see the candles aisle in this place.
They have them twirly
Large
Larger
The photo is not blury, you’re drunk
Scented
Scentless
Birthdayful
Oh hellooo thereee~
Twelve candles for $1.94 you say?
Meaning SIXTEEN CENTS A CANDLE?
Adopted.
Don’t let anyone tell you cheap candles don’t get the job done, people!
Plus they burn just as good.
NOW at this point the store was 10 minutes away from closing time, so I had to stop taking pictures to get my ass outta there, BUT
Here’s a look at what we got:
That doesn’t look too good, let’s add a F I L T E R
Those little crochet doilies that will serve as my new altar tablecloths? They were $0.55
But Amis! Those don’t look too witchy, more like what my grandma puts under her vases!
First of all, how dare you.
Second of all, how dare you.
Granmotherly stuff is witchy by D E F I N I T I O N. Embrace the grandma aesthetic, y’all!
Also:
If you’re poor you have to be CRAFTY. Look at that! It has a pentacle now. How long did it take? Literally 30 seconds! Imagine what we could do with a whole afternoon!
Ok, I admit it, that was a fiasco, BUT WE’RE ONTO SOMETHING THERE.
Let’s take a closer look at what else we brought, shall we?
This tiny chest is 7.5 cm wide x 5.5 cm tall x 5.5 cm deep (3 in x 2.1 in x 2.1 in) and will hold my pocket altar. It was *drum roll* $1.70!
I was getting tired of using my mom’s big ass scissors to cut my tiny delicate herbs, so I got myself this pair of snips! Price: $0.55 and they’re sharper than Tom Hiddleston’s style. Plus they serve a multitude of purposes, like shanking a bitch.
A quick stop by the crystal shop that was also closing (pfft crystal shop. Sounds like out of a fantasy novel, love it) yields the following goodies:
-Onyx ($0.55)
-Fluorite ($0.27)
-Snowflake obsidian (hard to get where I live. It’s kinda pricey at $2.20. I recommend other kinds of obsidian or maybe just black glass as I’ve been using until today, it still works awesomely. I got the obsidian because I wanted to experiment with it and my Mentor recommended me to get it, same as the fluorite).
-And the CUTEST little quartz formation. This one kinda defeats the purpose because it was a bit pricey. You don’t need it; any clear quartz will work the same. It was $4.50 and it was my guilty pleasure of the month. It also came with a free satchel that’s most certainly going to be used with magickal results in the foreseeable future.
More of it because it’s so gorgeous ♥
Back to the fluorite! That shit is large and cheap! Well, you see, it’s kinda ugly because I was part of a larger stone and broke down the middle when they were trying to perforate it to make it into a pendant.
But check this hot babe out
W O R K I T
Coming back from the imports store, I paid a visit to my pot dealer erh I mean my herbs supplier. Got myself some ginger for $0.27
AND THEN
I SAW IT
Maybe they don’t package it like this in your country, but here this little shitty capsule is worth its weight in GOLD.
Y’all know what this is?
This is SAFFRON.
Now normally I steer fucking clear of things this expensive, but when I asked my dealer I mean the vendor she said it was on sale.
This stuff LITERALLY sold by FRACTIONS OF GRAMS. In this case that’s 0.2 grams of saffron, that’s 0.007 ounces. YES. ZERO POINT ZERO ZERO SEVEN. Insert here Bond reference
Retail price? Normally around $8 per capsule (EIGHT AMERICAN DOLLARS!)
How much on sale?
TWO DOLLARS.
A tip for the broke witch: hunt down for sales. Even if you don’t use the ingredients in your spells, you can still trade them with other witches or with anyone, really.
After this I went home and decided to try out my new candles.
And as I said, if you’re poor, you gotta get crafty!
I cut one of the candles in half. A part went to my pocket altar, and the other half…
I used one of those ceramic saucers with the little erh… lower level circle in the middle?
USE CERAMIC. THIS IS IMPORTANT. IT RESISTS TEMPERATURE WELL AND YOU’RE GONNA NEED IT.
Melt the wax in the microwave or on the flame and then make sure it stays in the center of the saucer. Then take it out and wait until it cools down (or put it in the freezer if you are an impatient little shit). DO NOT LET IT SOLIDIFY COMPLETELY.
Then you take it out and use a round cookie cutter (or if you’re a cheap ass like me, find something else)
I just used the styling nozzle of my hair drying because F U K D A P O L I C E
Put it again in the freezer and once it’s completely solidified use a spatula because you, my dear witch
Just made yourself a moon wax amulet!
Engrave it with your sigils, place it on your altar, carefully soften the bottom with heat and use it as a seal, the possibilities are endless!
BUT WAIT, WHAT ABOUT THE REMNANTS!?
EVIL EYE WARD!
The rest? Melt it again or use it as a poppet in case you wanna cast a spell over an onion ring…
By the end of the day, our haul is:
-Altar cloth $0.55
-Herbs snips $0.55
-Mini-altar wooden box $1.70
-Dozen of blue candles $1.94
-Ginger root $0.27
-Satchel $0
-Snowflake obsidian $2.20
-Fluorite$ 0.27
-Onix $0.55
-Quartz crystal formation $4.50
-Saffron Capsule $2
A grand total of $14.53!
Of our budget of $15 we still have $0.47 that where I live is enough for the bus ride back home!
If we take away the unnecessarily pricey stuff (the quartz and the saffron) we got everything for $8.03!
Now if THAT’S not magick, I don’t know what is!
SOME FINAL TIPS!
1) REUSE as many things as you can.
2) MOVE THOSE FEET. I know it doesn’t sound appealing, but CHECK SEVERAL PLACES. Find the best prices by checking different stores and comparing.
3) BE CREATIVE. If you find yourself in need of something you can’t afford, think and find a way to replace it or get it through other routes. As I said, witch trading is a thing!
4) BARGAIN. There’s no shame in it, people! If you’re dealing with independent merchants and buy regularly/are buying a lot, try to get better prices! Don’t disrespect their business, though!
5) REMEMBER YOUR MANTRA. Witchcraft requires NOTHING. Except you.
Let's say you're target also has a willing accomplice to their bullshit. If you make a doll for each of them, you can put them in the same box, but back to back, so that they feel crowded and pressed against the sharp points, and fight each other for even a breaths more space, unintentionally driving the other (and themselves) further onto the spikes. Since they're backs are to each other they won't be able to see that it's themselves that are pushing each other further into the curse lol. Just take them out and cleanse them to stop everything 🤷🏾♀️
You can actually achieve the above sense of claustrophobic squirming by simply filling it with dirt! Just layer it up over the doll as much as the tin will tolerate while still closing!
Or, add googly eyes! So they forever feel watched lol
