seto kaiba is a special level of fucked up what do you mean there is this child version of you in your head that splits off you whenever you are too distressed n experiences all the emotional turmoil FOR you while you get to watch it all happen as a sort of bystander because that’s how disconnected you feel from yourself

rant below the cut (yapping about my thoughts lmao)

couldn’t stop thinking about Gozaboru’s signature suit being the color red. Soemthing about the visual of his suit dripping blood from those he had helped kill, allowing him to own this very suit in the first place.

Seto meanwhile used to wear white, something that is not only often associated with innocence but also nothingness, a blank slate of sorts. White fabric stains easily and this would easily adopt the red dripping from gozaboru’s suit (as well as being hard to wash out and most likely staying forever, even if only faintly).

The jacket itself is too big to fit little Seto, not only because it’s a position unbefitting for a child to be put into, but also because their ideals fundamentally do not align. Still, the jacket is being held in place on the left side of the image by another hand, only staying on Seto’s body to due an outside force. Naturally, as seen on the right, it slips off his shoulders. Also noteworthy is that Seto stands perfectly still, passive in this action and having the jacket forced upon him against his will.

Additionally, Seto is presented in a greenish hue (haha s0 reference), not only to contrast Gozaboru’s red, but also because it makes him appear sickly and distant. His facial expression is supposed to match that of his appearances in the actual series, despite him still being younger in this. He may still be a child, but mentally has already transformed a lot through Gozaboru- faster than he actually grows up physically.

Lastly, I also thought of this at Seto kind of looking at himself through a mirror or something (thus the front facing view and look forward), seeing how he’s being transformed to fit the role of a kaiba heir yet powerless to do something against it (at least the whole mental part yk since that’s a big part of his character later on, esp w battle city semi finale against yugi where he struggles to break free from what gozaboru has taught him).

on your kaiba arts ive seen you mention a few times smthn about him having trauma around his name, id lovE to know what your thoughts are on that

this kind of narrative haunting has lingered in my mind for a while since i first noticed it in another work of fiction i enjoy (psst. you should play yuppie psycho). it's also been rooted in my head after reading a fic by rainstormcolors (whose works always nail kaiba's character on the head)

i think about how seto is always referred to as "kaiba", the name of his horrible stepfather passed onto him.

as seto grew up i think he became more and more alien to his former life, he became estranged to the thing he holds most dear, his younger brother mokuba. can he even look at him in the eyes the same?

seto may have killed gozaburo but gozaburo has long beaten, bruised, and done away with the child known as "seto".

kaiba has long become stranger to "seto"

he is the ceo of kaibacorp now, he is kaiba. he's filled the role he was whittled to fit into. the spot of the man whose memory feels as comforting as the clamp of a wolf's maw.

kaiba. kaiba. kaiba.

i think that as ceo he has to prove himself worthy of the chair, running this race constantly. there are many complicated feelings from kaiba and his upbringing.

he cares so deeply about children in unfortunate circumstances but with the arrogant front he has i can't see it for him to tank the pain of unwravelling his past. we've already seen that child seto and kaiba have grown to be different people in the manga. i think he has so many memories and feelings repressed that thinking about it would probably send him into a spiral. just my thoughts
