ok originally i had this in the tags but it's very important that everyone is on the same page about the kakapo.
first of all: they're huge and green and i like them
they are also a conservation success story in the making! people have quadrupled the population of the beautiful and stunning kakapo over the past few years & they're currently in a very special breeding season! they only breed once every few years when a certain fruit is readily available because they feed their chicks with it, and this is a big year for the fruit and so a bigger year for the kakapo! let's use this poll to celebrate their success, not to spread the word of the already well-loved and common raven!
like think of it this way. people often don't know about kakapo and i think that's why they're losing right now. but! what if people learned about them? what if YOU learned about them? we could spread the word and educate people even more about them, which could lead to more donations and grants for their conservation!
a vote for kakapo is a vote for LOVE and HEALING!!

I worked at a zoo with Red-crested korhaan and they were.... so strange. They would constantly scream, we had one that we literally never saw because it constantly hid in the bushes and another that would violently attack every time you entered its exhibit. They're definitely the personality pick here.

& coastal jungle sounds that are tercets from cicadas and pentameter from the hairy legs of
cockroaches.
i’ve donated bibles to thrift stores
(mashed them in plastic trash bags with an acidic himalayan salt lamp—
the post-baptism bibles, the ones plucked from street corners from the meaty hands of zealots, the
dumbed-down, easy-to-read, parasitic kind):
remember more the slick rubber smell of high gloss biology textbook pictures; they burned the hairs
inside my nostrils,
& salt & ink that rubbed off on my palms.
under clippings of the moon at two forty five AM I study&repeat
ribosome
endoplasmic—
lactic acid
stamen
at the IHOP on the corner of powers and stetson hills—
i repeated & scribbled until it picked its way & stagnated somewhere i can’t point to anymore, maybe
my gut—
maybe there in-between my pancreas & large intestine is the piddly brook of my soul.
it’s the ruler by which i reduce all things now; hard-edged & splintering from knowledge that
used to sit, a cloth against fevered forehead.
can i let them both be? this fickle faith and this college science that heckles from the back of the
classroom
now i can’t believe—
that the bible and qur’an and bhagavad gita are sliding long hairs behind my ear like mom
used to & exhaling from their mouths “make room for wonder”—
all my understanding dribbles down the chin onto the chest & is summarized as:
Whoever made you think you'd get teased for not drinking alcohol at parties was lying. You're their new supreme. You can go pick up more snacks. You can take care of the fallen. You can talk to the cops. If you have a car, you can drive people home.
In movies they always portray the sober person as a nerd but it's more like being a priest. Your lack of engagement in the carnal realities of the party makes you holy and powerful. You are a vital pillar of the community. A rock in a raging storm. Now go answer the door for the pizza man.
