The gargoyle clamped its stone jaws down on the water bottle, stopped glowing, and activated some kind of mechanism that revealed a new path onwards, deeper into this harrowing labyrinth.

As for that last room.... thankfully, it was quite easy to pass, but Kaoru did feel a bit emptyhanded without anything. Granted, he’s certain Kanata would wield a sharp, heavy-handed weapon more effectively, but.... aren’t the two of them a little too eager to pick a fight? It’s nice to see that someone around here is unfazed at the thought of danger, but Kaoru really wonders if his party members are going to show any restraint if something really does show up.

Since he wasn’t holding anything to defend himself, he figured it would be fine to drop his pace a little to walk beside the others. No need to charge ahead blindly. In an effort to get his mind off of the creepy interior decor, he forced himself to speak up while they walked. “Hey you.... I don’t like getting buddy-buddy with just anyone, really, but since we’re probably going to be stuck here for a while...”

Kaoru had to scratch the back of his neck nervously and hoped this guy was as carefree as he sounded. “...mind telling me your name again? Ah, nothing personal.” Well, for the sake of team unity he didn’t want him to feel horribly left out so he doesn’t run off or something, but this guy seemed pretty rational at least, if not a bit strange. Kaoru’s pretty grateful he’s here with someone he knew, since he had someone he could trust considering they all got thrown into random teams and were expected to explore this dungeon together.

The conversation’s halted when he realizes the path in front of them ends abruptly, blocked by a wall. Damn. A dead end. Well, they’d have to turn-

A few very heavy stomps that seemed to shake the floor a little rang out, slightly muffled through the wall he was facing. Barely a moment later, a loud shriek pierced the silence, sending a shiver through his spine.

“...That.... did you two hear that...?”

Equally clueless to the direness of the situation was Mica. The bones scattered around the dungeon didn’t even register to him as remotely threatening–the only thing he took note of was that his two teammates seemed to be friends, therefore he would have to play third wheel.

He watches in slight awe as the two humans make eye contact, then, wordlessly, a message is passed between them. If Mica weren’t such a patient person, then he would have rolled his eyes at the blue haired boy’s staunch refusal to give up his water bottle, but the pettier aspects of human emotion didn’t even faze him anymore. Instead, Mica turns to Kanata and pats his hand, trying to sound as godly as possible.

“Young one, I have heard and understand your concerns–there is no human in this world, after all, who would give up the opportunity to quench his thirst. But I couldn’t help but notice that bottle was empty, therefore it cannot help you. Won’t you give up such a senseless object for the greater good? I’ll give you one of my wrenches in return.”

Ah.... this would be troublesome. Logically, they should give up the item with the least... practical value, but here Kanata is, latching desperately onto his water bottle. Well, Kaoru kind of understands where both of them are coming from. This other guy, Mica, was it? To the both of them, an empty water bottle is of little value to them.

But Kanata likes the water, and this is something like a memento to him, isn’t it?

A little nervous, Kaoru steps in and places a hand on Kanata’s shoulder, squeezing gently. “Hey, it’s a little insensitive to call it senseless, isn’t it? Even if it looks like a piece of garbage, given the right situation, it could shine, right?”

...Got a little sidetracked there trying to placate Kanata, but he smiles and tries to sound as reassuring as possible. “Well... majority vote or not, just taking things just isn’t my style. So... Kanata.” He feels a little guilty for turning on his friend, but in the end... sentimentality alone wouldn’t help them get out of this dungeon. “Do you have a different suggestion?”

He scratches the back of his neck awkwardly, sighing a little. “And if it comes to that, it seems pretty unfair if you have your weapon just taken from you... so um, I’ll try extra hard to protect you?”

...

A little silly of him to say in retrospect, because if either of them was going to be mowing down monsters, it would definitely be Kanata.

“...Or you can just take my weapon?”

Leader, huh.... given the choice, he would have easily passed up the responsibility to someone else, but rules are rules, Kaoru supposes. He sighs, and nervously pushes open the door before them. This is probably their first challenge. They’ve been understandably quiet while walking along, given their situation. He doesn’t really want to do this, and this labyrinth is creepy as hell, with bones everywhere, but what else can he do?

The door swings open with a menacing creak, and he seems something gleam in the dark. Two things, actually, and he realises they’re eyes after he gets over his initial shock. Halting in his tracks and struck dumb with fear, he finally regains his composure and nervously steps back, clenching harder on the chainsaw in his hand. Well, at least he has something sharp to defend himself from...whatever that is.

It moves.

Kaoru yelps, moving his chainsaw in a battle ready stance. He feels silly after a moment passes and enough light gets in, because it’s just an otherwise empty room with statue of a gargoyle, with its mouth wide open. A glittering line of text appears above it.

“In order to pass, you must give up that which you value most,” he reads out loud, voice shaking a little bit from his earlier shock.

Well, that could mean two things. They brought nothing here with them except their bodies and these... weapons. This gargoyle could be asking for their weapons, probably. He doesn’t really want to consider the alternative.

“So.... maybe we just have to give this statue something?” he finally asks out loud, eyeing the statue’s sharp teeth nervously. Between the three of them, the most useless item would be...

...and his eyes couldn’t help but trail towards Kanata’s water bottle.

❀ :: Er… the bell did ring, did it not?

She gives the class a brief once over, her second time now. Yes, yes, everyone was here, and all was well! … except that there was one desk in particular that remained empty. It wasn’t really a big deal though, she supposes; after all, students will be students, and she understands how boring it can be…

Though the absence does render her anxious. This was her job, after all. Did someone not like her? Perhaps her color scheme was too harsh on the eyes? Maybe -

“Oh… !”

She jumps just a bit when the door cracks open. There’s a student there, blond hair, sheepish, a little windswept - no doubt the missing piece. Ah, but entering the room when everyone else was already present… surely, that must be embarrassing, no? So she wears the warmest smile she has, and offers him an acknowledging nod.

“Ah, you’re just on time… Kaoru Hakaze, correct?”

Ah.... he’s not really used to this whole getting on class time thing yet. And he doesn’t think he’ll ever get used to it, but it’s admittedly a little embarrassing being called out to like that by the professor like that. Especially since he’s new here. And the professor in question is really, really cute.

Almost cute enough that he would come to class on time if it wasn’t for the fact he didn’t keep track of his schedule very well. But definitely cute enough to feel bad about being late.

“Ahaha... that’s me! I got a little lost, hope I didn’t keep you waiting too long, Miss Harnier~”

Well, he heard some stifled giggling from somewhere in the class, but no matter. He shuffles into the last remaining seat and drops his bag under his chair. It was dreadfully light and definitely not packing any heavy textbooks, but well.... he’s more of a hands-on learner anyways. Ah, well, maybe he should at least pretend to be taking notes, so he slides out a fresh, unused notebook and opens it to the first page.

...

Well. The main problem is that he doesn’t exactly have any writing utensils. He inconspicuously digs in his pocket once more, hoping for some miracle, but it doesn’t happen, so he shrugs internally and just decides to sit it out. No promises that he won’t start dozing off any time soon though...

23. sleepy kiss;

he nervously stepped into the classroom after class, scanning the room for a sign of his textbook; it would be a real pain to have to go file a missing item report, so he’d rather get this done with quick. to his surprise, there was still someone left in class, dozing off rather happily at a desk.

well… he felt kind of bad just not doing anything, so he sighed and walked over. gently shaking the other person’s shoulder, he mumbled, “hey. wake up, class was over ages ago.”

he didn’t expect them to lazily grab him by the collar and plant a sloppy kiss right beside his lips. he froze for a second before forcefully dragging them away from him by their shoulders and shaking them awake with more fervor. “okay sleepyhead, wake up from that nice dream of yours. rise and shine. you really owe me one for this, okay?”

14. passionate kiss;

there were two nice things about this situation:

one; kaoru could now cross “we ran into the storage closet to hide from the teacher while ditching class and ended up getting locked in the closet somehow” off of his bucket list.

two; izumi’s lips were soft. very soft. kaoru is certain that despite having lost access to his ordinary skincare products, izumi has definitely found some very effective magical alternative here. it’s also kind of cute that he had to yank kaoru’s head down by his tie to kiss him, because izumi seemed too proud to stand on his tip toes.

well, he was actually in shock for a grand total of two seconds before he figured, why the hell not? if they’re going to die together in a dark and moldy storage room, then it’s okay to get these pent-up feelings out of the way before that. and if they do get out… what happens in the storage closet stays in the storage closet. probably.

 It was most definitely a lot less stuffy outside of that chaotic school and the best part was the water springs surrounding it, but he had yet to discover their whereabouts. With suddenly being hurled into this new environment, he found himself on guard more than ever. Especially now that magical powers were involved. It was exhausting to say the least. Although the lush green beyond those safe walls of the school wasn’t exactly the most relaxing place, it was at least quiet

 They really were in space, with all these weird stars and planets littering the skies above. Maybe Ou-sama was right about those aliens, after all. He’ll never admit it though, not as long as they’re stuck here. With his back to the cold stone walls of the school, an Elemental Magics textbook laid open on his lap. Even if this wasn’t exactly the career path he was taking, he will pass everything perfectly like always.

 A strong draft blew away the page he was currently reading causing his brows to scrunch together. How annoying. Flipping back to the section he last was reading, but the wind now blew the opposite direction. Not only was it annoyingly flipping the pages, but it’s also messing up his hair. Frustrated, he slammed the book shut and hastily stood up, bringing some leafy greens with him, to change his spot.

 Once he turned the corner, a familiar blond mullet covered his entire field of vision before the impact with the figure sent him stumbling back. Luckily, he caught his balance. Losing it in front of this person would’ve been unsightly. His signature frown quickly formed, even if he was quite happy to see the other.

 “Kao-kun~ So it really is you, huh~ Watch where you’re going! Aren’t same class as me? Why don’t you read the textbook, or something? Ugh, the wind here is intolerable!”

He was just meandering about, enjoying the rather pleasant day before something-- no, someone suddenly collided with him. Owww...  that hurt a bit. He rubbed his chin, trying to massage away the pain. Before he could vent out his irritation at the perpetrator, a familiar voice snapped him out of his stupor and he stared wide-eyed at the figure before him.

He swept his eyes up, down, up once more, and confirmed to himself that he really wasn’t hearing things. Izumi Sena, his former classmate, looking rather pouty as usual, and the perfect height to smash his forehead into Kaoru’s chin. Ah, how sweet fate must be, bringing his classmates to school one by one... really, how many more surprises is this world even going to bring?

“Ah, if it isn’t Senacchi! And you should watch where you’re going first~ you really did me a good one there. Though, unpleasant greetings aside-- I really feel less surprised than I should be that I see you here~ And to think we were all saying our tearful goodbyes just a couple weeks ago, and now we get thrown together in a place like this. Crazy, right?”

The wind... ah. That was his fault. A little sheepishly, he scratches the back of his neck and looks away. “Well... I’m sure the all-business Sena is dying to know. I was just out here practicing for our class actually. Here, I’ll show you. You should know that stuffy books aren’t my thing~”

A little bit of concentration and... whoosh. A strong blast of wind, directed at the tree above them. It was enough to shake the branches and dislodge a few dead leaves in the tree, sending them tumbling down towards the two below.

Well.... a bit of a miscalculation. He probably doesn’t look too impressive with leaves stuck in his hair, but hey, Sena just got here too, right? Maybe he’ll think it’s cool or something. Or....well, this is the overachiever he was talking to here. He placed a hand on his hip and leaned forward a little, smiling rather slyly at Izumi.

“Since we’re both in Miss Harnier’s class... I bet you can do something interesting too. Want to show?”

glancing furtively in both directions once more, he exhales and  cups his face in his hands, groaning a little. “i guess the obvious choice would be that guy, and... oh come on, do i really have to say it out loud?” he looks pleadingly at the sky for help, as if some lightning or a meteor would just descend and end him on the spot. but god is not that kind, and the skies are clear and lovely today. 

as quietly as he can, he mumbles, “i suppose... if it’s kanata-kun i think... a kiss or two on the forehead would be okay with me.”

kaoru didn’t think the akehoshi kid had it in for him so bad until today. well, a dare’s a dare; especially in a world like this, where you were practically bound to do it…with the fearlessness of a man who had already accepted his impending demise, he wandered about school until he finally caught sight of professor ishmael, and casually called out his name. “hey! professor, you have a moment?” 

and without even waiting for a response, he nervously looked into the other man’s eyes and scrambled for something to say. “your eyes…” quick, he needed something quick! “…are an ocean.”

that didn’t seem like it was enough, so he started to panic and his eyes drifted upwards a bit, looking at ishmael’s glossy, crystalline hair. he could… work with this, he supposed. “and your hair….”

wow, it was as if the world conspired against him and made him immediately forget how to be smooth that day. he begged himself to think of something he liked. something cool. something…. blue.

“…is also an ocean.”

…

at this point, professor ishmael ending his life sounded like a great prospect, actually.
