Creating the "illusion" of Augmented Reality - Demo # 1

One thing that I love about Microsoft's Hololens kit, is the ability to walk around the room and watch T.V at the same time. With that being said, I wanted to re-create the same illusion within this video demonstration.

Purpose of this video??..... ANSWER = Recreating the illusion of Augmented Reality "done easily". If anyone needs assistance with an upcoming AR project, or needs someone to bring the concept partial reality (for testing), just  let me know....

The future of AR design is about "Interaction". As an Entrepreneur I know that in order to meet expectations of our clients, we must deliver "Results". But when it comes to this new territory called - Augmented Reality, it seems as though it might be "tricky" to prototype success. I created this video to illustrate that anyone with no design skills or video editing skills can create cool concepts for trial and error. I do see something like this video demo coming to fruition by future companies such as Yelp or Grubhub. It's only a matter of time before everything is within AR reach. Also note that I am mimicking "Hololens", which is why there is the interaction with the fingers....Anyways, let me know what you guys think in the comments below. I wanted to replicate the experience of fake AR illusion by getting on the road and creating this experience for you (GPS Demo). Don't be too surprised that in the near future we will have a lot of AR interaction while we are driving. Even though this video is simple in it's form, I can see it being even more interactive with the use of imagination. Anyways, wanted to show you guys that anyone can create the illusion of AR. I created this video because I wanted to create a fake AR environment (including my laptop - being part of the demo). I got the idea of the video demo when I was looking at shoes the other day, and thought to myself - can't wait until I can see things in person before spending the money. Yes I know I could just go to the Footlocker or Finish line, but hey I'm lazy...lol...Anyways, I think the concept turned out alright. It does give the illusion of AR to some extent. Animators to make 100K a year in the next decade 

This Article is not to judge one career field from another. But let me start off by saying that animators are not making as much money now, as they will be in the next few years to come. According to Salary.com, the average salary for an Animator is about $47,981 (in the U.S). If you are coming right out of college, then the starting rate is about 30K. What if I had told you that by 2020 an Animator could be making close to 100k, or even more? Does that sound too far-fetched?

A recent report by Digi-capital, reports that Augmented Reality is forecast to become a $120 billion dollar economy. An Animator with the “right mindset” could be missing out if not well prepared. There is a lot of preparation involved in the development of Augmented Reality applications, most requiring a good knowledge foundation of “frame” by “frame” prototyping & a good understanding of Unity. Some may argue that a graphic designer is sufficient. Nevertheless, I would have to disagree with that notion. You are not designing for a webpage, or for a mobile application. This is a completely new ballgame with new opportunities yet to be unearthed. If you are someone interested in becoming an Animator, and want to see the income potential as talked about in this blog posting, then you may want to check out this Course to be better prepared. Why your Business needs an Augmented Reality Plan!

If your belief is that Augmented Reality won’t impact the future of business - think again! Anytime something new hits the market, there will be winners and losers. To assume that change won’t occur, let’s recap the lesson learned from the “blockbuster franchise”. For failing to innovate and adapt to new platform changes such as “streaming’, another competitor stepped in “Netflix” - which completely demolished blockbuster from the face of the Earth. So do you want your business to experience the same fate? It does not matter if your industry is small or large. Augmented reality and Virtual reality will change the playing fields once again. So the question you may want to ask yourself is - how should my business be prepared for this awakening?

(1) Start Brainstorming:

The reality is, is that unless your business puts the effort in creating a unique experience for your customers, it is more likely that they won’t care too much for your AR app. I mean does your company really need an Apple watch app? I believe that if you want to impress your customers then you will need to create an “experience”, not just a destination.

(2) Creating an Action Plan:

So now that you have an idea of what the AR experience should be, you will need to ask yourself - “how am I going to prototype this?” Whats the point of having a unique idea if it can’t be illustrated? For most business owners, hiring a graphic designer to illustrate a concept could be “costly” & ”time consuming”. But at the same time you know deep in your heart that your company should be prepared, and have a mock-up of some sort . So in order to accomplish a ready made prototype, then you should consider taking  a course on how to Create an Augmented Reality Storyboard. This way once the time is ready, your company can be the first one to benefit from the influx of future Apple/Microsoft & Google customers. It’s always better to be the 1st one “seen”, then to be listed/ranked at the bottom.

(3) Be Ready to Cash in:

It is true - that just because you create an experience, it does not mean that people will automatically accept and buy from your company. But… what if they do? If your company lags the time to build and grow for the future, then I am afraid your company is going to hurt as a result. History does have a tendency to repeat itself, and it would be a shame if your fate ended up costing your business thousands or millions of dollars. If you are still not convinced of what’s to come, then you may want to start googling the subject matter and see for yourself. Remember that “change” is in fact “inevitable

Who will Dominate the AR market, and how to get ready…$$

When Steve jobs first unveiled the iphone -  the world was stunned, and mesmerized at the same time. The App market boomed with intensity and all sorts of apps were created as a result. Some have known this money making period as the “App gold rush”. Well, now a new “gold rush” is under way with Augmented reality, and the big question is - who is going to be the company that is going to dominate the sector? Will it be apple with a new pair of iglasses? Or will Microsoft have a better chance this time with their Hololens? Let’s also not forget that Google has invested alot of time and money in a company called MagicLeap (which is currently working on an AR kit as well). So who are you going to bet on, and why should you be concerned. Let’s take a closer look:

Who is doing what:

As I have described before, all 3 companies are building something. Most of the respective members of the Tech community would all agree on this. So the important question to ask is - what is the timeline for all 3 players? Well, if you're an Apple fan you may be surprised to hear that there is a rumor that they might unveil something in the near future (aside from apples ARkit). Of course since apple is so discreet, it's hard to say if the information is factual or not (but more factual as the result of ARkit). Lets not forget about the mystical “Apple TV”, you know the one that Steve Jobs had mentioned in his Autobiography. Well we haven’t seen it yet, have we? If you're hoping for those cool future AR glasses that you seen in shows like “Blackmirror” on Netflix - well I realistically think that you may have to wait a few years before you see that technology be made avail to the masses. So what about “Microsoft”?..Well if you’re a Tech nerd then you already know about Hololens. Supposedly there is a new Hololens kit being in the works right now, and a 2017-2018 looks to be promising. However, I highly doubt that normal consumers would be caught dead wearing this Alien like helmet. I think it is going to be a few more years before Microsoft comes out with something more acceptable by society. Finally, there's “Google”. According to the news media they seem to be putting a lot of hope on MagicLeap. As of recent news MagicLeap has been on the spot light with a lawsuit due to their technology not being up to par as they had previously hyped it up. It’s hard to tell when they are planning on releasing their AR headset as they keep this information on a hush hush.

Who is the best bet? 

As a present day developer, I would be looking to get a  good practice on Hololens. The reason being is because they already have a  developer kit and learning tools on how to build apps for Microsoft. I would not sidestep Microsoft or underestimate their abilities. They know too well that they have missed the boat when they were defeated by Apple’s iphone. I highly doubt that they are going to let Apple beat them again. I’m just saying don’t underestimate Microsoft. However, the near future could be different. Apple has a history of allowing its competition to go first, and then step in to claim it’s glory. If you don’t believe me, then you must have not known that the iphone was “not” the first touchscreen IOS device. With that being said Apple could be the more “acceptable” choice for consumers. But to wait for Apple’s arrival in this market is unpredictable. If you're a developer or designer, it’s best to learn as much as you can about the Augmented Reality so that you get a feel for  whats to come. And as far as Google’s investment with Magicleap, I feel  that only in due time will we see if Google can dominate the sector. Even though Google has had much success with its Google play store and IOS software, I do not see them being too big of a player in the hardware  side. Let us not forget that the dominant hardware provider with Google’s IOS     has been Samsung (so far). With all three options, I would go with “Microsoft”     first, and then see what Apple and Google do.

How to be ready? 

So now that you know who is doing what, the big question you need to ask yourself is, how do I prepare for myself, my company, or my clients for development? Augmented Reality is in fact a new industry which WILL be accepted by the world, in due time. So in order to be prepared, you need to start thinking of ways how you can integrate your current existing app over to AR. When you really start to think about it, some questions may come up, such as - how will I communicate my ideas with designers and developers to stay ahead of the curve. Well if you’re looking to bring your ideas to life then you may want to create a custom AR storyboard that can be easily demonstrated to anyone. Just because you have an idea for a new AR App. It does not mean you can show the entire thing on a “paper napkin”. The future of Web development will be different, and if you want to stay ahead of the curve, then you may want to invest the time in prototyping your current/future concepts the right way, before you end up spending “thousands of dollars” of development costs - Just a thought.

How to create the next “Pokémon” AR App?

So, you are walking down the street and it hits you -“what if I can make that into an AR App”. While the idea that you have in your head make look cool, how exactly are you going to prototype such a concept on paper? Before you go online to hire a “designer and developer”, you may want to consider developing a storyboard to better illustrate your idea with both parties. I highly stress that you take the time to get your concept right the first time, before you end up spending 100’s or 1,000’s of dollars on development costs. We all know that if we fail to communicate with others, then we are bound to fail in general. Therefore, in order to create a great storyboard, the next question you have to ask yourself is – what are the obstacles and solutions in sight:

 The Hidden hurdle that awaits

While it still may be possible to create the easy concepts of an AR app such as the look of certain elements, buttons, or characters using traditional UI tools. What people fail to realize is that you cannot test an AR app concept on a wireframe mockup? Why – Because you are not testing your wireframe concept on a computer screen or mobile device. AR apps live in the “Real World”, not on a computer screen. Note that I’m not talking about uploading an image onto “Unity” to test drive the concept. I am talking about how the app is going to interact to its environment with people, nature, and other circumstances prior to full development. All modern app concepts start on a piece of paper, and then move on to pre-development sketches on a computer screen. In an essence, traditional tools will not do the trick. Designers, Developers & Small Business owners will have to think outside the box in order to overcome the hurdles of prototyping with old outdated tools.

 The Solution is in Sight

So using traditional UI tools will not cut it. To be clear here I’m not saying that you cannot prove my theory incorrectly. What I am saying is that in order to create a prototype with all angles covered within an app, you do ideally have to think outside the box. The solution is simply to treat your prototype like a screenplay. You may be saying, why would I want to create my idea like a screenplay. Well the only way I can sum this up for you can be found on this course here. It is easier to show by example and for you to see the idea behind the concept, then to go into too much detail in this article. But I will say that if you are looking to dominate the AR market in the near upcoming future, you will need to know how to prototype your AR app faster. It does not hurt to think outside the box if you or your company are looking to transition from the current Mobile market to the AR Market. Lastly take into account that Hololens is working on taking AR to a whole new frontier with “Mixed Reality”…Yes, that is right – “Mixed Reality”….So, how on earth are you going to prototype that…lol….

Exactly my point, sometimes the solution does not have to be so complicated. If you’re serious about the next global phenomena, then you may want to look at this course that will show you how to start prototyping as quickly as today
