Franco-Ontarian culture: CANO

Originally this was supposed to be a part of a second segment about Franco-Ontarian music, but CANO was such an important part of the developing of a Franco-Ontarian identity that I’m dedicating this whole post to them.

Now, let’s go back in time a little in the 70s. It’s around the time that Quebec starts distinguishing itself from the rest of French Canada. There was a certain feeling of abandonment and a growing need in French Ontario to have their own cultural traditions. It’s in that spirit that a small group of university students from Sudbury created the Coopérative des artistes du Nouvel-Ontario (CANO).

This was a loose regrouping of varying types of artists such as musicians, comedians, poets, professors, and so on. At the time, it was a pretty big event. It brought a lot of attention to Sudbury and to the French communities from the North of the province. But more than that, it played a key role in the developing of a Franco-Ontarian literature, which existed before the Confederation but was more integrated in the French Canadian identity.

That’s when the idea took off that their literature should be published in Ontario, by a Franco-Ontarian editor, and presented/performed and destined to and for a Franco-Ontarian public. Just as Quebecers decided to take their faith into their own hands, Franco-Ontarians took theirs into their own. CANO inspired the rise of some distinct Franco-Ontarian institutions such as les Éditions Prise de Parole, la Galerie du Nouvel-Ontario, le Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario and the festival La Nuit sur l’étang. 

The creating of CANO by André Paiement, Gaston Tremblay, Denise Truax, Pierre Germain, Patrice Desbiens, Brigitte Haentjens, Pierre Bélanger, Marcel Aymar, Rachel Paiement, Denis Saint-Jules, Thérèse Boutin, Claude Belcourt had a really big impact on French Ontario’s cultural history. It lasted for about the next 20 years and really marked the recent literary life. 

CANO also became a really popular band. They were appreciated throughout the whole country. They played a mixed of folk-rock and progressive rock songs. Through their music, they gave a voice to French Ontario and continued to promote the intellectual and cultural worth of Northern Ontario, especially Sudbury.

Voici une vidéo que j’ai produite avec Paul Kopjar pour un programme lancé par Francophonie jeunesse de l’Alberta. Le programme incite les jeunes d’expression française en Alberta de 14 à 25 ans, à penser à un projet qui apporterait du bien à un groupe de personne dans leur communauté ou même à la communauté entière. 

Alors, si vous parlez français, habitez en Alberta et êtes âgés de 14 à 25 ans, je suis certaine que vous avez des idées de projet. Appliquez, vous n’avez rien à perdre.

Bande-annonce de Mars et Avril - Mars et Avril trailer

Ce film de science fiction très imagé conte l'histoire d'un musicien qui commence à se sentir vieux, de son ami, un jeune concepteur d'instruments, et d'une photographe asthmatique qui devient l'amante et la muse de tous les deux. C'est une très vieille histoire dans un décor qui fait penser au Matrix, mais en partie tournée à Montréal (et ça se voit). À la fois traditionnel et expérimental, c'est un bon film qui pourra plaire aux adeptes de science fiction, mais aussi à ceux qui s'y connaissent moins. Par contre, il laisse désirer au niveau de la diversité des personnages et de l'hétérosexisme du scénario.

This visually striking science fiction film tells the story of a musician who's starting to feel his age, his friend the instrument designer, and the asthmatic photographer who becomes their muse and lover. It's a very old story on a Matrix-like background, but shot partly in Montreal (and it's noticeable). Both traditional and experimental, this film can appeal to science fiction fans as well as those new to the genre. Unfortunately, the lack of diversity of the cast and the heterosexism of the storyline take away from what is otherwise a good film.

"La chasse-galerie"

L'histoire de la chasse-galerie fait partie du patrimoine folklorique québécoise. Le conte était collectionné à la fin du XIXe siècle par l'écrivain, journaliste et folkloriste québécois Honoré Beaugrand (aussi connu pour son roman Jeanne la fileuse) dans un recueil de contes sous le nom La chasse-galerie.

Dans le conte il s'agit d'un groupe d'hommes travaillant aux chantiers en hiver qui veulent retourner à leurs maisons pour passer la fête de la nouvelle année avec leurs blondes. Mais comment pourront-ils voyager entre les chantiers et leur village dans une seule soirée? L'un d'eux suggère un plan assez audace (et assez dangereux): faire un accord avec le diable.

Ce court métrage de l'ONF fait aussi allusion aux histoires des loups-garous, dont une apparaît dans le recueil de Beaugrand.

The story of the chasse-galerie is a part of Québec's folkloric heritage. The tale was collected at the end of the 19th century by the Québécois journalist, writer, and folklorist Honoré Beaugrand (also known for his novel Jeanne la fileuse) in a book of folktales called La chasse-galerie.

In the story, a group of men working at a logging camp in the winter want to return to their homes to celebrate the end of the year. But how can they make the trip between the camp and their village in just one night? One of them suggests a daring (and dangerious) plan: make a deal with the devil.

This NFB short film also alludes to stories about werewolves, one of which appears in Beaugrand's collection.

Court interview avec Grégoire Chabot, partie du Projet Rally Franco Diversité organisé par le Centre de la francophonie des Amériques. Grégoire Chabot est un dramaturge et essayiste franco-américain, originaire de Waterville, ME. Il a présenté sa première pièce de théâtre, Un Jacques Cartier Errant, en 1976.

Short interview with Grégoire Chabot, part of the Projet Rally Franco Diversité organized by the Centre de la francophonie des Amériques. Grégoire Chabot is a Franco-American playwright and essayist originally from Waterville, ME. His first play, Un Jacques Cartier Errant (translated into English as Jacques Cartier Discovers America) premiered in 1976.

Mimosa - Mila

Mimosa est un groupe jazz/pop/bossa nova de Vancouver. Anna Lumière écrit leurs paroles en anglais, français et espagnol. La chanteuse est Rebecca Shoichet.  Ils sont surtout connus à Vancouver, et distribue leurs albums eux-mêmes, mais être choisi deux ans de suite par Radio-Canada pour l'évènement Mai de la chanson d'ici, qui met en vedette la musique francophone de l'ouest du Canada leur a permis de se faire connaître un peu plus.

Mimosa is a jazz/pop/bossa nova group from Vancouver. Anna Lumière writes their lyrics in English, French, and Spanish, while Rebecca Shoichet sings. They're mostly known in Vancouver, but they were chosen by Radio-Canada two years in a row for the Mai de la chanson d'ici event, which promotes francophone music from western Canada, and that got them a little more publicity.

Soir de semaine à Arts in the Park (Whitehorse, Yukon)

Soir de semaine est composé de 5 musiciens qui jouent ensemble au Yukon depuis 2003. Ils ont sorti deux albums à date, et jouent un mélange de rock, ska, et reggae. Ils se maquillent et des fois se déguisent pour leurs shows.

Soir de semaine (Weeknight) is made up of 5 musicians who've been playing together since 2003. They've put out two albums thus far, and play a mix of rock, ska, and reggae. They put on makeup and sometimes costumes for their shows.

Le Poil de la bête (A Hair-Raising Tale)

En Nouvelle-France, Joseph Côté, condamné à mort, s'échappe et se déguise en curé. En même temps, le Seigneur de Beauport choisit sept Filles du Roy pour marier ses hommes et ses fils. Les jeunes femmes sont mises en quarantine, au cas où elles seraient malades. Arrivé dans la Seigneurie, Côté découvre qu'un loup-garou rôde aux alentours. Les colons prennent Côté pour le Père Brindamour, fameux chasseur de loup-garous, mais lui, il veut juste sauver sa peau. C'est plus un film d'aventure que d'horreur, avec plein d'humour, qui ne m'a pas fait peur du tout (et je n'écoute pas les films d'horreur). Les comédiens prennent tout très au sérieux, ce qui rend le tout plus drôle. Un bon film pour une soirée entre amis, sans plus.

Avertissements : violence, sang, tentative de viol

In New France, Joseph Côté escapes before his hanging and disguises himself as a priest. Meanwhile, the Seigneur de Beauport choses seven Filles du Roy to marry his men and his sons. The young women are quarantined in case of sickness. When Côté arrives in on Beauport's lands, he discovers that there is a werewolf in the area. The colonists take Côté for Father Brindamour, the famous werewolf hunter, but he just wants to save his own skin. More of an adventure than a horror movie, with a fair bit of comedy. It didn't scare me at all (and I don't watch horror movies). The actors take everything very seriously, which just makes it funnier. Good for a movie night with friends, but not a great film.

Warnings: violence, blood, attempted rape

Leoffenders - Demain

En 2008, Josée Allard, une francophone de Powell River, CB, et Danielle Hébert, une québécoise qui faisait carrière à Vancouver, se rencontrent sur une tournée et décident de faire de la musique ensemble. Elles ont gagné un concours d'écriture de chanson et ont ainsi pu faire cette vidéo. Elles ont aussi joué aux Jeux olympiques d'hiver 2010, à Vancouver. À toute évidence, le groupe n'est plus actif, mais Danielle Hébert fait une tournée et Josée Allard s'est déplacé à Montréal pour commencer une carrière - en anglais!

In 2008, Josée Allard, a francophone from Powell River, BC, and Danielle Hébert, a Québécoise on the Vancouver music scene, met on a tour and decided to play music together. They won a songwriting contest and thus recorded this video. They also played at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. From what I can tell, the group is no longer active, but Danielle Hébert is on tour and Josée Allard has moved to Montreal to start a career - in English!

Têtes à claques - Le CD shovel 2007 (LCD Shovel Full HD - English version)

Les Têtes à claques c'est des vidéos humoristiques animées. Certaines ont été traduites en anglais. La technique consiste de l'animation de volume à base de pâte à modeler, mais en éditant après pour ajouter les yeux et la bouche de l'animateur, Michel Beaudet, ce qui donne un drôle d'effet visuel. Certaines des vidéos contiennent de l'humour plus adulte et une, Le cannibale, à été condamnée comme raciste by Québec Pluriel. En général, même si je n'ai pas écouté tous les clips et ne peux pas vous avertir de tout, j'ai l'impression que Beaudet ne se soucie pas beaucoup du politiquement correct. Celui-ci, par contre, se moque de la publicité.

Têtes à claques is a site full of funny animated videos. Some have been translated to English. They use a stop-motion animation technique: the characters are made of modelling clay and photographed, and the eyes and mouth of the animator, Michel Beaudet, are edited in, which creates an interesting look. Some videos have more adult humor, and one, Le Cannibale (The Cannibal) has been condemned as racist by Québec Pluriel. In a more general sense, though I haven't seen all the videos and can't warn you about everything, I don't think Beaudet is very concerned with political correctness. This one, however, makes fun of infomercials.

Court métrage documentaire sur le périple mémorable de la Chorale Saint-Jean, d’Edmonton, invitée à participer aux festivités du 400e anniversaire de Québec. Ponctué par les témoignages des protagonistes, dont ceux de Laurier Fagnan, le chef de chœur, et de l'auteure-compositrice France Levasseur-Ouimet, le récit de ce « retour aux sources » nous réjouit et nous interpelle. Avec émotion et humour, le film démontre que l'avenir du français hors Québec n'est pas nécessairement sombre. Ainsi la culture franco-albertaine s'épanouit au-delà de la survivance et vient enrichir notre patrimoine à tous. 

Note aux étudiants du français : le film dispose des sous-titres français.

Documentary short on the memorable journey of the Chorale Saint-Jean (Saint John Chorus), of Edmonton, invited to participate in the Quebec City Quadricentennial celebrations. Intersperced with the stories of its heroes, including those of Laurier Fagnan, Choir Director, and of author-composer France Lavasseur-Ouimet, this tale of 'returning to their roots' is joyful and engaging. With emotion and humour, the film demonstrates that the future of French outside of Quebec is not necessarily bleak. Franco-Albertan culture thus grows beyond mere survival and enriches our collective heritage.

Mara Tremblay  - Viens me chercher & Le spaghetti à papa (avec Ben Cliche)

Mara Tremblay, anciennement des groupes Lard Bedaine, Les Maringouins, Les Colocs, Les Frères à ch'val, a entrepris une carrière solo en 1999. Elle joue du rock et du pop. Ben Cliche commence à être un peu connu en tant que cuillèriste - il a fait un spectacle avec le Cirque du Soleil au mois d'octobre (2012) et sa chanson La linebo était un des hits de la grève étudiante de 2012. Au mois de novembre (2012), il a essayé de faire une chanson par jour pour le spoonovember, mois de sensibilisation pour le cancer du cerveau (dont il souffre) qu'il a inventé. C'est dans le cadre de ce mois qu'il a joué avec Mara Tremblay.

Mara Tremblay, formerly of the groups Lard Bedaine, Les Maringouins, Les Colocs, Les Frères à ch'val, began her solo career in 1999. She plays rock and pop. Ben Cliche is beginning to be known as a spoon player - he did a show with Cirque du Soleil in October (2012) and his song La linebo was one of the hits of the 2012 student strike. In November 2012, he tried to do a song per day for the Spoonovember, the month of brain cancer awareness that he invented (he has brain cancer). As part of that, he played with Mara Tremblay.
