New York-based photographer Brea Souders:
These works came about after the death of both of my parents within the span of one year. Also influenced by my studies in hypnosis and the unconscious, I weave the objects and fuzzy memories of my childhood together with representations of my present self. Objects that I’ve culled from my parents’ home and that have influenced me from childhood to the adult I am today – an African violet terrarium, giant shell and fossil collections, art and physics books, microscopic slides of human and insect body parts, family pictures and painting sets – come together to create works about my family, loss, memory and a shifting identity. The images are illuminated with a harsh confessional light, often rendering things more mysterious.
